Projectile Worksheet #2 Name _____________________

Hour _________

For your solutions to these problems draw a picture of the situation described and label it
with the given information. Neglect any air resistance.

1. A girl runs at a speed of 3.9 m/s off a high dive and hits the water 1.8 seconds later.
a. How high was the diving board?
b. How far horizontally was she from the board when she hit the water?
c. How long would it have taken her to hit the water if she had simply stepped off the
board with no significant horizontal velocity, less time, more time, or the same
amount of time?

2. A rock is thrown horizontally from a building at 15 m/s. It hits the ground 45 m from the
base of the building.
a. How high was this building?
b. What was the velocity in the x direction upon impact?
c. What was the velocity in the y direction upon impact?
d. What was the velocity upon impact?

3. A football is kicked from ground level at a speed of 20 m/s at an angle of 42˚.

a. How long does it take to hit the ground?
b. How far from does it land from where it was kicked?
c. What was the velocity of the football at it’s maximum height?
d. What was the football’s maximum height?

4. The crossbar of a football goalpost is about 3.5 m above the ground. A fieldgoal kicker
kicks a football with a speed of 20 m/s toward the goalpost at an angle of 37˚ above the
horizontal. He is 32 m away from the goalpost. Is the attempt good? If not, by how
much does he miss? If so, by how much does the football clear the crossbar?

5. In track and field a shotputter puts the shot with a velocity of 10 m/s at an angle of 37˚.
The height of release was 2.0 m.
a. Find the distance traveled by the shot in this effort.
b. What was the velocity of the shotput when it hit the ground?

6. A ball rolls off a track that is angled at 25˚ at the edge of a table. The table is 1 meter
high. If the track is placed at the edge of the table, how far from the table will it land if the
velocity when it rolled off was 2 m/s?
7. Alex finds that it takes 0.20s for a ball to pass through photogates placed 30 cm
apart on a level ramp. The end of the ramp is 92 cm above the floor.
Where should he place a coin so that the ball strikes it directly on impact with the
ground?

8. Suppose now that the same ball, released from the same ramp (92 cm high) struck
a coin placed 25 cm from the end of the ramp.
a) What was the ball's horizontal velocity?
b) How long did it take for the ball to pass through the photogates?

9. Suppose a metal sphere is launched up a ramp and arrives at the top of the ramp
with V = 1.5 m/s. The end of the ramp is 1.20 m above the floor. Calculate the range of
the sphere.
Vi

20°

10. Now suppose that the ramp is tilted downwards as shown below.
Vi

15°
Suppose that the sphere leaves the ramp at 1.5 m/s. The bottom of the ramp is 0.90 m
above the floor. Calculate the range of the sphere.
