■ Text
Students will get a better understanding on how to factor polynomials by reading the Factoring in
Algebra text. The text will provide students with an introduction on polynomial factoring and a
review on factors if they have already been introduced to them. The lesson will introduce terms
that students will be exposed to throughout their mathematics class and in the text. The students
will gain an understanding of factoring polynomials and how to find the factors. The purpose of
the lesson is for students to learn how to use the different writing strategies and form a better
The semantic map strategy was selected because it promotes critical thinking and gives students
the opportunity to organize their prior knowledge. The students are able to brainstorm
connections and make comparisons about the concept. After the lesson the students will be able
to evaluate how accurate their semantic map is and make any necessary revisions to show their

Key Terms
Begin the activity by introducing the assigned text and the key terms. Then introduce the
Semantic Mapping strategy and go over the content of the worksheet. Ask students if they have
any questions about the activity. Have students work on the semantic mapping for 20 min before
they read the text to assess their prior knowledge and make connections. Observe the students

The exit slip was selected because it gives students the opportunity to reflect on their learning.
The exit slip requires students to think critically about what they understand and what they may
still have some questions about. The exit slip can also serve as an assessment and give me an
idea of what I need to change in my lesson to better support the students’ understanding.
■ Materials:
Exit Slip
After students have read the Factoring in Algebra text introduce the exit slip and go over the
content of the slip. Give students 10-15 minutes to complete the exit slip and observe them. Tell
students to leave the exit slip on their desk when they are done or to turn them in before they exit
