HOMILY OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF FRANCIS I

Sunday, 18th January 2015
“A child is born to us, a son is given us” (Is 9:5). It is a special joy for me to celebrate
Santo Niño Sunday with you. The image of the Holy Child Jesus accompanied the
spread of the Gospel in this country from the beginning. Dressed in the robes of a king,
crowned and holding the sceptre, the globe and the cross, he continues to remind us of
the link between God’s Kingdom and the mystery of spiritual childhood. He tells us this
in today’s Gospel: “Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not
enter it” (Mk 10:15). The Santo Niño continues to proclaim to us that the light of God’s
grace has shone upon a world dwelling in darkness. It brings the Good News of our
freedom from slavery, and guides us in the paths of peace, right and justice. The Santo
Niño also reminds us of our call to spread the reign of Christ throughout the world.
In these days, throughout my visit, I have listened to you sing the song: “We are all God’s
children”. That is what the Santo Niño tells us. He reminds us of our deepest identity.
All of us are God’s children, members of God’s family. Today Saint Paul has told us that
in Christ we have become God’s adopted children, brothers and sisters in Christ. This is
who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful expression of this when Filipinos ra-
llied around our brothers and sisters affected by the typhoon.
The Apostle tells us that because God chose us, we have been richly blessed! God “has
blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Eph 1:3). These words
have a special resonance in the Philippines, for it is the foremost Catholic country in
Asia; this is itself a special gift of God, a special blessing. But it is also a vocation. Filipi-
nos are called to be outstanding missionaries of the faith in Asia.
God chose and blessed us for a purpose: to be holy and blameless in his sight (Eph 1:4).
He chose us, each of us to be witnesses of his truth and his justice in this world. He
created the world as a beautiful garden and asked us to care for it. But through sin, man
has disfigured that natural beauty; through sin, man has also destroyed the unity and
beauty of our human family, creating social structures which perpetuate poverty, igno-
rance and corruption.
Sometimes, when we see the troubles, difficulties and wrongs all around us, we are tem-
pted to give up. It seems that the promises of the Gospel do not apply; they are unreal.
But the Bible tells us that the great threat to God’s plan for us is, and always has been,
the lie. The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of
sophistication, the allure of being “modern”, “like everyone else”. He distracts us with
the view of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes. And so we squander our God-
given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we

turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really matter. We
forget to remain, at heart, children of God. That is sin: forget, at heart, that we are chil-
dren of God. For children, as the Lord tells us, have their own wisdom, which is not the
wisdom of the world. That is why the message of the Santo Niño is so important. He
speaks powerfully to all of us. He reminds us of our deepest identity, of what we are ca-
lled to be as God’s family.
The Santo Niño also reminds us that this identity must be protected. The Christ Child is
the protector of this great country. When he came into the world, his very life was
threatened by a corrupt king. Jesus himself needed to be protected. He had an earthly
protector: Saint Joseph. He had an earthly family, the Holy Family of Nazareth. So he
reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, and those larger families which
are the Church, God’s family, and the world, our human family. Sadly, in our day, the fa-
mily all too often needs to be protected against insidious attacks and programs contrary
to all that we hold true and sacred, all that is most beautiful and noble in our culture.
In the Gospel, Jesus welcomes children, he embraces them and blesses them (Mk 10:16).
We too need to protect, guide and encourage our young people, helping them to build a
society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage. Specifically, we need to see
each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected. And we need to care for
our young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to life on
the streets.
It was a frail child, in need of protection, who brought God’s goodness, mercy and justi-
ce into the world. He resisted the dishonesty and corruption which are the legacy of sin,
and he triumphed over them by the power of his cross. Now, at the end of my visit to
the Philippines, I commend you to him, to Jesus who came among us as a child. May he
enable all the beloved people of this country to work together, protecting one another,
beginning with your families and communities, in building a world of justice, integrity
and peace. May the Santo Niño continue to bless the Philippines and to sustain the
Christians of this great nation in their vocation to be witnesses and missionaries of the
joy of the Gospel, in Asia and in the whole world.

when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For
every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel
for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion
rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of

foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he
destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor
of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved.
Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love for all the
holy ones, do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of
wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts
be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what
are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones.

was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they had

salem, but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him
among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned
to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astound-
ed at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son,
why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with
great anxiety.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not
know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he
said to them.
He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and
his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and
age and favor before God and man.

Profesión de fe

En lugar lugar del Símbolo Niceno-constantinopolitano, sobre todo en el tiempo de Cuaresma y en el tiempo de
Pascua,se puede emplear el Símbolo bautismal de la Iglesia de Roma, también llamado «de los Apóstoles».
Creo en Dios, Padre todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor, que fue concebido por obra y
gracia del Espíritu Santo, nació de santa María Virgen, padeció bajo el poder de
Poncio Pilato, fue crucificado, muerto y sepultado, descendió a los infiernos, al

En verdad es justo y necesario, es nuestro deber y salvación darte gracias

siempre y en todo lugar, Señor, Padre santo, Dios todopoderoso y eterno, por
Cristo, Señor nuestro. Porque en el misterio santo que hoy celebramos, Cristo,
el Señor, sin dejar la gloria del Padre, se hace presente entre nosotros de un
modo nuevo: el que era invisible en su naturaleza se hace visible al adoptar la
nuestra; el eterno, engendrado antes del tiempo, comparte nuestra vida tem-
poral para asumir en sí todo lo creado, para reconstruir lo que estaba caído y
restaurar de este modo el universo, para llamar de nuevo al reino de los cie-
los al hombre sumergido en el pecado. Por eso, unidos a los coros angélicos,
te aclamamos llenos de alegría:
Al final del prefacio junta las manos y, en unión con el pueblo, concluye el mismo prefacio, cantando o diciendo con

PLEGARIA EUCARÍSTICA
Luego dice una de las siguientes fórmulas:

Este es el Misterio de la fe.
Y el pueblo prosigue, aclamando:

Anunciamos tu muerte,
proclamamos tu resurrección.
¡Ven, Señor Jesús!
Toma la patena con el pan consagrado y el cáliz y, elevándolos, dice:

Por Cristo, con él y en él, a ti, Dios Padre omnipotente,

Rito del Communion
Una vez depositados el cáliz y la patena sobre el altar, el sacerdote, con las manos juntas, dice:
Fieles a la recomendación del Salvador y siguiendo su divina enseñanza,
nos atrevemos a decir:
Extiende las manos y, junto con el pueblo, continúa:

Padre nuestro, que estás en el cielo,
santificado sea tu Nombre;
venga a nosotros tu reino;
hágase tu voluntad en la tierra como en el cielo.
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día;
perdona nuestras ofensas,
como nosotros perdonamos
a los que nos ofenden;
no nos dejes caer en la tentación,
y líbranos del mal.
Solo el sacerdote, con las manos extendidas, prosigue diciendo:
Líbranos de todos los males, Señor,

y concédenos la paz en nuestros días,
para que, ayudados por tu misericordia,
vivamos siempre libres de pecado
y protegidos de toda perturbación,

Comunión
El sacerdote hace genuflexión, toma el pan consagrado y, sosteniéndolo un poco elevado sobre la patena o sobre el
cáliz, hacia el pueblo, dice con voz clara:
Éste es el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.
Dichosos los invitados a la cena del Señor.
Y, juntamente con el pueblo, añade:

Señor, no soy digno de que entres en mi casa,
pero una palabra tuya bastará para sanarme.
Muestra el pan consagrado a cada uno, sostieniéndolo un poco elevado, y le dice:

El Cuerpo de Cristo.

Acts 3:1-16, 4:5-12
Once, when Peter and John were going up to the Temple for the prayers at the
ninth hour, it happened that there was a man being carried past. He was a crip-
ple from birth; and they used to put him down every day near the Temple en-
trance called the Beautiful Gate so that he could beg from the people going in.
When this man saw Peter and John on their way into the Temple he begged from
them. Both Peter and John looked straight at him and said, ‘Look at us.’ He
turned to them expectantly, hoping to get something from them, but Peter said,
‘I have neither silver nor gold, but I will give you what I have: in the name of Je-
sus Christ the Nazarene, walk!’ Peter then took him by the hand and helped him
to stand up. Instantly his feet and ankles became firm, he jumped up, stood, and
began to walk, and he went with them into the Temple, walking and jumping
and praising God. Everyone could see him walking and praising God, and they
recognised him as the man who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the
Temple. They were all astonished and unable to explain what had happened to
him.
Everyone came running towards Peter and John in great excitement, to the
Portico of Solomon, as it is called, where the man was still clinging to Peter and
John. When Peter saw the people he addressed them, ‘Why are you so surprised
at this? Why are you staring at us as though we had made this man walk by our
own power or holiness? You are Israelites, and it is the God of Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, who has glorified his servant Jesus, the
same Jesus you handed over and then disowned in the presence of Pilate after
Pilate had decided to release him. It was you who accused the Holy One, the Just
One, you who demanded the reprieve of a murderer while you killed the prince
of life. God, however, raised him from the dead, and to that fact we are the wit-
nesses; and it is the name of Jesus which, through our faith in it, has brought
back the strength of this man whom you see here and who is well known to you.
It is faith in that name that has restored this man to health, as you can all see.’
The next day the rulers, elders and scribes had a meeting in Jerusalem with
Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and all the members of the
high-priestly families. They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began
to interrogate them, ‘By what power, and by whose name have you men done
this?’ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, ‘Rulers of the peo-

ple, and elders! If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a
cripple, and asking us how he was healed, then I am glad to tell you all, and
would indeed be glad to tell the whole people of Israel, that it was by the name
of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the
dead, by this name and by no other that this man is able to stand up perfectly
healthy, here in your presence, today. This is the stone rejected by you the build-
ers, but which has proved to be the keystone. For of all the names in the world
given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.’

From the sermon of Saint Leo the Great, pope

Sermo in Epiphanitate 7, 3-4: PL 54, 2258-2259
The whole practice of Christian wisdom consists not in a profusion of words,

in adroit argumentation or in a craving for praise and glory, but in the genuine
and voluntary humility which, from the womb of his mother until his suffering
on the cross, the Lord Jesus chose and taught as the fullness of power.
When, as the evangelist tells us, his disciples were arguing one day which of
them would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, he called a little child, had him
stand in front of them, and said: “I assure you that, unless you change and become like
little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. But he who makes himself as
little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Christ loves the childhood which he accepted for himself both in his soul and
in his body. Christ loves this childhood, this teacher of humility, this rule of in-
nocence and shape of gentleness. Christ loves childhood: he directs the conduct
of adults to it, to it he leads old people back: and he induces to follow his own
example those whom he raises to the eternal kingdom.
But to make us capable of recognizing how it is possible to attain such an ad-

mirable conversion, such a transformation by which we can return to a childlike

attitude, let Saint Paul be our teacher, as he tells us: “Do not be like children in your
way of thinking, but be like babes insofar as evil is concerned.” We have not to go back
therefore to children’s games nor to the inadequacies of our tender years, but to
take from it something that still befits a mature age, like the fast appeasement
from irritation and a speedy return to calm, the total oblivion of offences, the ab-
sence of cravings for honours, the love of companionship, a sense of natural
equality. It is a great good not to know how to harm others and not to enjoy evil.
It is the policy of this world to inflict and repeat wrongs; but not to repay evil with
evil is the childhood of Christian equanimity. Dearly beloved, the mystery of to-
day’s feast invites us to this likeness with children. It is this form of humility
which the Lord teaches us, when, as a child he was adored by the Magi. To show
what kind of glory he prepared for those who imitate him, he consecrated by
martyrdom the children born at the same time as he: as they were brought forth
in Bethlehem where Christ was born, they shared both in his age and in his pas-
sion.
Let those who believe therefore love humility and keep from pride. Let each
prefer his neighbour to himself. No one should regard his own interest but ra-
ther that of his neighbour. Thus, when all will be filled with sentiments of kind-
ness towards others, the poison of envy will be found in no one, for he who exalts
himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
For he who bears witness to this is our Lord Jesus Christ himself, who lives
and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Intercessions
All praise and honor to Jesus Christ! He lives for ever to intercede for us, and he
is able to save those who approach the father in his name. Sustained by our faith,

-so that all men may enjoy your never failing light.

The devotion to the Santo Niño (Holy Child)
is the oldest and one of the most popular in the
Philippines. When Legazpi landed on the island
of Cebu in 1565, one of his soldiers found an im-
age of the Child Jesus. It is believed to be the same
statue Magellan had given to the wife of the
chieftain of the island after her baptism. The im-
age is venerated today in the Basilica of Cebu.
For Filipino Catholics the Holy Child represents a
God who is accessible to all and can be ap-
proached without fear. The devotion instils the
virtues of simplicity, obedience, and trust in God.
At the same time it calls for mature discipleship
and loving service to all.
