Equation of an ellipse:
(DF2/OG2)+(OF2/OE2) = 1 Þ DF2 = (1- (OF2/OE2))OG2
(OE2-OF2)+DF2 = DE2
Substituting Eqn -1 in Eqn -2 yields:
[1-(OG2/OE2)]OF2 - 2OEXOF+(OE2+OG2-DE2) = 0
OF = 1107.6 mm
b = 55.67 °
Angular rotation, α-b = 0.58 °
Total rotation at joint due to movement of two adjacent segments, θ

3.4 Check on Radial Anti -Splitting Steel (Hoop of Main Reinforcement Bar )
Given curved joints and therefore asmall contact width in the radial direction relative to wide longitudinal contact width, the radial anti-
spliting reinforcement is the giverning case ( as opposed to the rebar that runs longitudinally , also parallel to the joint)
Splitting Failure
Factored Axial Hoop Force N = 1666.12 kN/m Ref Curtis Muir Analysis
Factor of Safety for Radial Splitting 2.24

Assuming ram shoe is wider than the joint contact areaCWc, the loss of contact is found by;
Width of ram to segment contact, assuming the ram rigid, and so ca be modled as UDL across the full width.
At eachend of the segment, the ram shoe may overhang the joint regate length if the shoes are distributed evenly around the
ring. This reduces the contact length and load spread length as follows;
New Contact length of outer shoe, clshoe = Min ( lshoe/2+dedge-jrl, lshoe) = 888 mm
Assuming load spreads into segment maintaining the aspect ratio of the applied load area,, according to BS EN 1992 -1 -1 - 6.7
