LEARNING ACTIVITY 3.1

1. What is “leadership by example”? Cite examples.

For me, leadership is an act of supervision to your subordinates by means of leading

them in their works or leading them towards the right paths. An example of
leadership is when you elected as an Class President, during the time that you will
take the position you will assume such an functions as leader in your class and you are
expected to perform well during your term by means of being a role model in your
class, leading your classmates in good and right paths and the like.
2. It is said that there is no one best leadership style for an organization. What
does this mean?

Every person is a unique individual, thus there is a different style or forms of

leadership this could be democratic form of leadership, authoritarian, charismatic or
even dictatorial leadership, it depends on the person who will lead you and it is also
depend on his or her subordinate on how they will work together as one team.

4. Identify the basic difference/s between behavioral and trait approaches in

leadership.

Basically, behavioral approaches it emphasizes what leaders actually do on the job

meanwhile traits approaches has to do with the personal attributes of a leader
focusing on the aspects of managerial motivation and specific skills aside from
personality traits or general intelligence.

5. What are the traits that can increase or diminish the efficiency of a leader?
a. Examples of traits that can increase efficiency:

Job Performance
The employee performance will speak for itself. Not only is there a good performance
with little supervision but also willing to take up additional responsibilities. Such
employees do not require supervision and direction to complete tasks. They take up
the ownership towards their work and derive satisfaction by completing tasks and
being productive.
Professional Development
Efficient employees always look to develop themselves professionally by working
towards improving their position. They actively participate in their career
development programs and also keep up on the current industry trends. Their
efficient work pays off and helps them climb the organizational ladder. They are
concerned about the company’s performance and also offer ideas to improve the
same.
Open minded
Efficient employees have a positive attitude and an open mind. They are emotionally
stable and have a consistent and efficient working and leadership style. They are
quite composed even under pressure. An open mind enhances the learning
capabilities of employees and also makes them good problem solvers.
Optimistic
They outperform the negative employees in productivity, energy levels, and health
care costs. Their approach is quite receptive and they are more successful and
effective in handling clients than their negative counterparts.
Interpersonal relations
A trait characteristic of efficient employees is their positive attitude towards their
colleagues. They are quite cordial in maintaining healthy work relations with their
team members. They are confident about their capabilities and also help other team
members to improve themselves.
Feedback
Satisfied employees are receptive to feedback about their work as they constantly
look to improve their skills and efficiency. They take healthy criticism in a positive
way and look at it as an opportunity for self-improvement.
Knowledge Updated
Satisfied employees keep their knowledge updated with the current trends and
anything concerning the company be it newsletters, advertisements, press coverage,
etc. This shows their interest and dedication towards the company even though their
business position does not necessarily ask for it.
b. Examples of traits that can diminish efficiency:

Low emotional intelligence.

In a nutshell, having low emotional intelligence, or EQ, is toxic for business as it
affects everyone you come in contact with. EQ is often just as important as your
actual IQ (or raw intelligence). EQ helps you understand others and recognize what
motivates them. A strong EQ is the foundation for working cooperatively with a group
and creating a sense of cohesion at work.
Chronic sarcasm.
A little bit of sarcasm can come across as funny at times, but if you live to spout
sarcastic comments, you may be unwittingly creating a toxic environment. This is
especially true if you focus your snarky on belittling others or enjoy giving
backhanded comments to subordinates.
Inflexibility.
The ability to think on your feet and be open to suggestions and ideas is crucial to
being able to adapt to unexpected changes in any business. When you’re too rigid in
your thinking and decision-making, you can inadvertently limit your options or be
unable to make quick adjustments as needed -- and this will adversely affect your
business.
Not following through.
Failed promises and flaky leadership diminish your credibility with those you work
with. If you want to preserve your influence and earn the respect of others, you’re
going to need to learn to follow through and follow up.
Impatience.
The success or failure of a business is often based on timing -- knowing when to leap
and when to stand back, analyze and consider your options. But making these
decisions requires an ability to step back and have the patience to contemplate the
bigger picture.
Being a control freak.
We usually assume that the most successful people in business are those who have all
their ducks in a row -- they have a meticulous plan and know exactly where each
decimal goes. But if everything is perfectly lined up, you’re only allowing yourself to
see as far as the end of that list. Anything beyond those computations or conclusions
is also beyond you and your control, and this can leave you flailing.
Lacking empathy.
It’s easy to feel cynical sometimes, but those who fundamentally lack empathy or fail
to show compassion will find their toxic attitude is corrupting their company.
Cynicism makes you look defensive and angry. Empathy helps others feel connected
and understood. We’re naturally drawn to those who are supportive and seem
relatable.
Being closed-minded.
Closed-minded people tend to want to point fingers at others rather than accept
responsibility when things go wrong. They believe they have the answers to
everything, so they have a hard time listening to what others have to say.
Constant complaining.
Nobody likes a pessimist. If you’re constantly complaining, you’re not only bringing
everyone else down, you’re being unproductive and making everyone else more
unproductive to boot. Plus, you come across as a high-maintenance whiner.
Managing with fear.
Are you a “my way or the highway” type of manager? This mindset is absolutely toxic
to businesses. Many leaders use fear-based measures to control others without being
aware of what they’re doing. These are the managers who wield a big stick and keep
everyone on edge. They use tacit threats and scare tactics to get others to do what
they want.
Narcissism.
Narcissists are noxious to a business because their enlarged ego keeps them from
listening to anyone who contradicts them. They really don’t want to hear what you
have to say if you’re not in line with their thinking. Oh, and they’re also completely
self-focused. If that’s you, then this is your wake-up call.

6. As a Filipino student with a maturing sense of leadership, make short

comments on the leadership style of the following:
a. The President of the Republic of the Philippines.

The Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is trying his best to lessen or eradicate
the major problems of the country such as the rampant culture of graft and
corruptions, unemployment rate, overpopulation, pollutions, economic recessions and
even the pandemic that we are experiencing today but for me in order to attain his
goals to solve this problem he must fire first those cabinet members, as well as the
other government officials who commit corruptions and serious crimes even those
people are his allies.
b. The Senate President.

The current Senate President of the Philippine Government is no other than, Vicente
“Tito” Sotto III the brother of Vic Sotto. The only things that I can say to the Senate
President is that stop politicizing the other members in the senate instead he and his
subordinates in the senate should work on the bills that can help or contribute to the
marginalized people of the country in order for us to experience the so called socio
economic development.
c. The Town/City Mayor.

7. During your elementary/high school years, have you ever acted as a leader
(examples: as class president, group leader, Boy/Girl, etc.)? Describe the type
of a leadership style/s you exercised.

Yes, during my senior high school days in Grade 12, I was elected as Class President. As student leader
my style when it comes in leadership is being authoritarian. I am exercising authoritarian leadership all
the way in the sense that I want to put my authority over our class and as a leader, I am very strict and
firm when it comes to cooperation, punctuality and teamwork especially if there is school events, when I
say all of them must be joined in any programs or activities in the school, they must join and attend
practices or rehearsal otherwise if they will not obey my rule I will reprimand my classmates.
