8. 4th Edinburgh International Graduate Conference in Late Antique, Islamic and Byzantine
Studies on "Catastrophes and Memory (500-1500 CE)", 19-20 November 2020

This conference focuses on the problematic relations between catastrophes and memory in Late Antique,
Islamic and Byzantine societies. Memory plays a crucial role in the way events are perceived, understood
and narrated by different groups and elites: locals might see the conquest of their city as a catastrophe,
while the conquerors portray the same as glorious or divinely inspired.

Proposals are invited on histories, memories, and narratives about Jews in the Middle East in the 20 th and
21st centuries in order to counter the broad narratives that lament the end of Jewish existence in the Middle
East and the Muslim World and promote a one-dimensional understanding of the Jewish experience in the
recent century and a half.

17. Postdoctoral Researcher in “Ancient Near Eastern Empires”, University of Helsinki

The project covers the Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, and early Roman / Parthian
Empires and is focused on the long-term processes by which social group identities and lifeways were
negotiated. Applications are welcome from social scientists (anthropologists, sociologists, economists, or
political scientists) with expertise in migration, forced labor, and/or identity studies, and ancient historians of
any of the relevant empires with similar profiles.

marginalised groups within the Islamic context. Scholarship is invited from disciplines that posit new
