There is an
epidemic involving
mental health in
our youth.
Anxiety and depression affect many children:
7.1% of children aged 3-17 years (approximately 4.4 million) have diagnosed anxiety.
3.2% of children aged 3-17 years (approximately 1.9 million) have diagnosed depression.

Connected to this, we need to
recognize that the mental health of
Alberta students is a “shared
responsibility of parents, educators
and community partners.”
WORKING
TOGETHER
TO SUPPORT
MENTAL
HEALTH IN
ALBERTA
SCHOOLS
We know that mentally
healthy students are
more likely to have
positive experiences at
school and beyond.
Mindfulness has quickly become a buzzword spoken about by educators, written about in
magazines and researched by psychologists.
For Children, mindfulness
means paying full attention
to something. It means
slowing down to really notice
what you're doing.
Mindfulness can be a
useful tool at each
developmental stage.
It can help with
anxiety and
promote overall
wellness.
The practice of mindfulness
helps children with their
wellness choices,
relationship choices and their
life learning choices.
In sum, individuals who use
mindfulness techniques in
their day to day lives are
better set up for positive
mental health and therefore,
positive wellness choices.
Health and Life Skills invites us to
deepen our understanding of
positive wellness choices,
relationship choices and life
learning choices. It allows us to
introduce mindfulness and the
associated benefits.
