Anxiety and depression affect many children: 7.1% of children aged 3-17 years (approximately 4.4 million) have diagnosed anxiety. 3.2% of children aged 3-17 years (approximately 1.9 million) have diagnosed depression. (https://www.cdc.gov/childrensmentalhealth/features/anxiety-depression-children.html ) Connected to this, we need to recognize that the mental health of Alberta students is a “shared responsibility of parents, educators and community partners.” WORKING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH IN ALBERTA SCHOOLS We know that mentally healthy students are more likely to have positive experiences at school and beyond. Mindfulness has quickly become a buzzword spoken about by educators, written about in magazines and researched by psychologists. For Children, mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Mindfulness can be a useful tool at each developmental stage. It can help with anxiety and promote overall wellness. The practice of mindfulness helps children with their wellness choices, relationship choices and their life learning choices. In sum, individuals who use mindfulness techniques in their day to day lives are better set up for positive mental health and therefore, positive wellness choices. Health and Life Skills invites us to deepen our understanding of positive wellness choices, relationship choices and life learning choices.
