Joemarie Lataquin is the head of the family and he is married to his wife Maricel
Lataquin. Joemarie is 40 years old and born on March 2, 1980. He does not have a
permanent work. Sometimes he works as a Karga tapas, farmer, helper of carpenter or
any available job. Maricel Lataquin is 36 years old and born on May 19, 1984. She is a
housewife and do not have a work. They are both a resident of Brgy Granada. They
have 5 sons namely, Carl Lataquin 6 years old born on March 17, 2014, Ryan Lataquin
5 years old born on April 15, 2015, Travez Lataquin 3 years old born on January 23,
2017, Joel Lataquin 2 years old born on March 6, 2018 and Jimuel Lataquin 11 months
old born on October 15, 2019 and still on breastfeeding. Joemarie’s mother-in-law, the
mother of her wife, Mila, is also living with them. She is 66 years old born on September
1, 1954 and she is a widow. They are all living in the same house in Brgy. Granada,
Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. The Lataquin family structure is considered as an
extended family because they live together with the mother-in-law. The authority in the
decision making of the family is equally exercised by the husband and wife. However,
the wife and the husband often quarrel because of each other’s failed responsibilities
like the mother unable to cook for dinner while the husband is always drunk. As a result,
they usually neglect their children and left unintended. The mother-in-law cannot help
because she has an asthma and was been previously diagnosed of pneumonia a year
ago.

Their net income only vary according to the husband’s work for the week. Maricel
verbalized that it approximately ranges from P4,000 – 6,000 per month. For their
monthly expenses, they allotted P 2,000 for the food, P 1,000 for the electricity bill,
P 500 for the house, P 500 for the clothes, P 500 for the water, and P 1,000 for
education.
Joemarie Lataquin and Maricel Lataquin are both a High-school graduate. Their
sons, Carl Lataquin is a Grade 1 student, Ryan Lataquin is in kinder, Travez
Lataquin 3 years old, Joel Lataquin 2 years old and Jimuel Lataquin 11 months old
stays at home. Joemarie’s mother-in-law, the mother of her wife, Mila, is a College
graduate.
The family members are all Catholic and the church near them offers religious
services and provides recreational activities. However, the Lataquin’s family does
not participate in the church or any religious activities.
The members in the family share the same ethnic background and they are all
Filipino Southeast Asian. The significant other that is included in the Lataquin’s
home is Mila, the mother of the wife. She is 66 years old and a widow.
Their community is generally peaceful, and they have a good relationship with the
community. They interact with the community and Maricel usually go to her
neighbor’s place to play “tong its”. Her 5 children normally goes out of the house and
go to open space or area in the community like basketball court or on the street
playing. Even the 11 months old, crawling in the street, is also playing. The one who
is taking care of them is the older brother. The father also spent his time after work
drinking with his friends in community until 1 am in the morning. He drinks almost
every day and he is already used to it. He is a also heavy smoker utilizes 10
sticks/day.

They reside in Barangay Granada, Bacolod City. As observed, they had occupied the
land unlawfully, which means they belong in the squatters area. Their house is made up
of a combination of concrete and wood, they are supplied with electricity and their
means of cooking is through using LPG, they also own a backyard outside their house
which sometimes they use to burn their garbage because they are not observing proper
waste segregation. In their house they only use curtain that serves as partition. As for
their toilet, they have pit privy. House pests are abundant in their home namely
mosquitoes. Given that they live in a tropical country, they often experience hot sunny
weather or rainy days which can sometimes result to flashfloods. According to them, the
river or stream is their only source of drinking water and they are also aware that it is
not safe for consumption.
Their barangay is generally peaceful because they are secured with police outposts with
barangay tanods roaming and there are certain crimes reported present in their
community, these are theft, rape, and drug using incidents. There are public
transportations available in their community such as jeepneys, public and private
motorcycles. Alongside there are other facilities located in their community such as
public elementary and high schools which they often send their children to, fire stations,
barangay health center and police outposts.

As for their means of communication, they use cellphone and telephone in case of
emergency. They are updated with the news through watching television and social
media. They do not read newspaper or printed materials because it will be an additional
expense. Their only source of current events and entertainment is their television.

As for the health condition of the family members, they have one family member who is
diagnosed with Pneumonia. Mila Lataquin, a 66-year old female. She is usually
attended by local “hilots” that are residing in their community. Aside from Mila, the other
family members common ailments experience in a year are fever, colds, flu, and
diarrhea. When their family member feels unwell, they usually consult a doctor in a
private clinic to seek for help. Whenever the mother in the family is pregnant, they
consult a midwife for medical attention, she then delivered her children in a hospital.
After giving birth she breastfed her newborn, until the baby reached 2-year old where
she was sustained with supplementary feeding.
The family members’ anthropometric data states that Joemarie has a height of 170.18
cm, weight of 61 kg and MUAC of 35 cm. Maricel’s height is 157.48 cm, a weight of 51
kg and MUAC of 30 cm. As for Mila’s height she is 152.4 in cm, weighs 50 kg and has

For their meals, they consumed rice, root crops, and fish daily. While for the vegetables,
fruits, and legumes, they have it at least twice or thrice every week. They prepare meat
and poultry once a week. They usually eat sardines, fish or sometimes pork and
vegetable that they get from the farm and most oftentimes their children are eating junk
foods like curls and soft drinks. Their only source of drinking water is a river or stream,
and they are also conscious that it is not suitable for consumption. But sometimes they
buy purified water if they have extra money.

Maricel’s mother, Mila has an asthma and was been previously diagnosed of
pneumonia 1 year ago. Her asthma often triggers during rainy days and from the smoke
of the mosquito coil. They usually suffer mild illnesses such as colds, cough, fever,
diarrhea, vomiting, and use medicines over the counter. The children are very thin and
underweight due to inadequate food intake and malnutrition.

As for the immunization, the mother was given Tetanus Toxoid immunization during her
pregnancy. The children of the household received immunization such as DPT, BCG,
Polio, Hepa B, Measles, HBS Ag, Flu vaccine. Whenever a family member is sick, they
buy their medicines in a pharmacy located in their community. They seldomly visit the
Barangay Health Center in their community because they prefer going to the Hospital.
