Introduction

Propaganda makes use of a

collection of devices and tricks
intended to influence your thinking.
What follows is a collection of these
techniques synthesized from several
sources. Some of them are related
and may overlap. Learning to
recognize these techniques can go a
long way toward immunizing
yourself from the effects of
propaganda.

Objectives
In this lesson, you will learn the following:
 Determine ideas that are explicitly used to influence viewers
Learning Points

Propaganda refers to any ideas or information spread to deliberately influence the

opinions, thinking, and emotions of people. Propagandas can have positive and negative effects.
A propaganda can promote, endorse, and uphold ideas. On the other hand, it can also deliberately
mislead people’s views and ideas.
Propagandists use a variety of techniques or devices to influence others. Here are some
commonly used propaganda devices:

1. Name-calling is the use of derogatory or offensive words or phrases to connect a person or an idea
to a negative concept. Its aim is to make a person reject or judge something without looking at the
facts.

Examples:

2. Testimonial uses the opinions of people to promote certain ideas. This includes using experts and
famous people to endorse a product or support an idea or cause.

Examples:

3. Plain folks is a technique wherein a person presents himself or herself as an ordinary life in order
to connect with the target audience or the masses. The person attempts to convince the audience
that his or her ideas are the ideas of the “ordinary people.” This technique is common among
political candidates who adopt a demeanor in order to appear as ordinary citizens.

Examples:
4. Bandwagon is a technique used to influence people to “join the crowd” or to persuade people to
follow a general trend. The idea is to convey that “since everybody is doing it, you should do it,
too.” If a person does not go on board, he or she will be left out or will be on the losing side.

Examples:

5. Eye appeal is a technique that uses a fake image of an item by altering the real one. Using photo
manipulation software, items are made to look better than how they truly appear in reality.

Generalization
Propaganda is communication that is used primarily to influence an
audience and further an agenda, which may not be objective and may be
presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or
using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response
to the information that is presented.
