THE ORDER OF MASS

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES

When the people are gathered, the Priest approaches the altar with the ministers while
the Entrance Chant is sung.

When he has arrived at the altar, after making a profound bow with the ministers, the
Priest venerates the altar with a kiss and, if appropriate, incenses the cross and the altar.
Then, with the ministers, he goes to the chair.

When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Priest and the faithful, standing, sign
themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Priest, facing the people, says:

I n the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The people reply:

Amen.
Then the Priest, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

7
PENITENTIAL ACT
Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the Priest invites the faithful, saying:

Brethren (brothers and sisters),

let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general confession:

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
The absolution of the Priest follows:

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
The people reply:

Amen.
8
KYRIE
The Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) invocations follows.

V. Lord, have mercy. R. Lord, have mercy.

V. Christ, have mercy. R. Christ, have mercy.
V. Lord, have mercy. R. Lord, have mercy.

GLORIA
The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said.

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, 9
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
COLLECT
When this hymn is concluded, the Priest, with hands joined, says:

Let us pray.
And all pray in silence with the Priest for a while.

Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Collect prayer, at the end of which the
people acclaim:

Amen.

10
LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING
Then the reader goes to the ambo and reads the First Reading, while all sit and listen.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

The word of the Lord.

All reply:

Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
The psalmist or cantor sings or says the Psalm, with the people making the response.

SECOND READING
After this, if there is to be a Second Reading, a reader reads it from the ambo, as above.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

The word of the Lord.

All reply:

Thanks be to God.

11
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
There follows the Alleluia or another chant laid down by the rubrics, as the liturgical
time requires.

Meanwhile, if incense is used, the Priest puts some into the thurible. After this, the
Deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the Priest, asks for the
blessing, saying in a low voice:

Your blessing, Father.

The Priest says in a low voice:

May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips

that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well,
in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, X and of the Holy Spirit.
The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies:

Amen.
If, however, a Deacon is not present, the Priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly:

Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God,

that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.

12
GOSPEL
The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, if appropriate, by
ministers with incense and candles. There he says:

The Lord be with you.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The Deacon, or the Priest:

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to N.

and, at the same time, he makes the Sign of the Cross on the book and on his forehead,
lips, and breast.

The people acclaim:

Glory to you, O Lord.

Then the Deacon, or the Priest, incenses the book, if incense is used, and proclaims the
Gospel.

At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:

Through the words of the Gospel

may our sins be wiped away.

13
HOMILY
Then follows the Homily, which is to be preached by a Priest or Deacon on all Sundays
and Holydays of Obligation; on other days, it is recommended.

PROFESSION OF FAITH
At the end of the Homily, the Symbol or Profession of Faith or Creed, when prescribed,
is either sung or said:

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
At the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow.

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
14 to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Then follows the Universal Prayer, that is, the Prayer of the Faithful or Bidding Prayers.

15
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR AND THE GIFTS
When all this has been done, the Offertory Chant begins. Meanwhile, the ministers place
the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall, and the Missal on the altar.

It is desirable that the faithful express their participation by making an offering, bringing
forward bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist and perhaps other gifts to
relieve the needs of the Church and of the poor.

The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly
raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

B lessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you:
friut of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.

I f, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at
the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God forever.

The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:

By the mystery of this water and wine

may we come to share in the divinity of Christ,
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

16
The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both
hands, saying in a low voice:

B lessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

for through your goodness we have received
the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.

I f, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at
the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God forever.

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart

may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.
I f appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A Deacon or other
minister then incenses the Priest and the people.

Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.
Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his
hands, he says:

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters),

that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the Almighty Father.
17
The people rise and reply:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good
and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the Offerings, at the end of
which the people acclaim:

Amen.

18
PREFACE II OF ADVENT
The twofold expectation of Christ

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

V. Lift up your hearts.

R. We lift them up to the Lord.

V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

R. It is right and just.

I t is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For all the oracles of the prophets foretold him,

the Virgin Mother longed for him
with love beyond all telling,
John the Baptist sang of his coming
and proclaimed his presence when he came.

It is by his gift that already we rejoice

at the mystery of his Nativity,
so that he may find us watchful in prayer
and exultant in his praise.

And so, with Angels and Archangels,

with Thrones and Dominions,
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn of your glory,
as without end we acclaim:

19
SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts.

Heaven and Earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

20
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
Celebrant alone

Y ou are indeed Holy, O Lord,

the fount of all holiness.
He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:
Celebrant with concelebrants

M ake holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,

by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and the chalice
together, saying:

so that they may become for us

the Body and X Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and
distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.

At the time he was betrayed

and entered willingly into his Passion,
He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.

T AKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,

FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects
in adoration.

21
After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks,

he gave it to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.

T AKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.

Then he says:
Celebrant alone
The mystery of faith.
And the people continue, acclaiming:

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.

22
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:
Celebrant with concelebrants

T herefore, as we celebrate
the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,
we offer you, Lord,
the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
to be in your presence and minister to you.

Humbly we pray
that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Celebrant or one concelebrant
Remember, Lord, your Church,
spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Francis our Pope and N. our Bishop
and all the clergy.
Celebrant or one concelebrant
Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with Blessed Joseph, her spouse,
with the blessed Apostles,
and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,
and may praise and glorify you
He joins his hands.

through your Son, Jesus Christ.

23
He takes the chalice and the paten with the host and raising both, he says:
Celebrant with concelebrants

T HROUGH HIM, AND WITH HIM, AND IN HIM,

O GOD, ALMIGHTY FATHER,
IN THE UNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT,
ALL GLORY AND HONOR IS YOURS,
FOR EVER AND EVER.

The people acclaim:

Amen.

COMMUNION RITE
After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Priest, with hands joined, says:

A t the Savior’s command

and formed by divine teaching,
we dare to say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

24
With hands extended, the Priest alone continues, saying:

D eliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.

The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:

For the kingdom,

the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

SIGN OF PEACE
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says aloud:

L ord Jesus Christ,

who said to your Apostles:
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.
He joins his hands.

Who live and reign forever and ever.

The people reply:

Amen.

25
The Priest, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace,
communion, and charity. The Priest gives the sign of peace to a Deacon or minister.

Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice,
saying quietly:

May this mingling of the Body and Blood

of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
The invocation may even be repeated several times if the fraction is prolonged. Only the
final time, however, is grant us peace said.

26
PRIVATE PREPARATION
Then the Priest, with hands joined, says quietly:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,

who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.
Or:

May the receiving of your Body and Blood,

Lord Jesus Christ,
not bring me to judgment and condemnation,
but through your loving mercy
be for me protection in mind and body
and a healing remedy.

COMMUNION
The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or
above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:

B ehold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
And together with the people he adds once:

Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
27
The Priest, facing the altar, says quietly:

May the Body of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.

Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:

May the Blood of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.

After this, he takes the paten or ciborium and approaches the communicants. The Priest
raises a host slightly and shows it to each of the communicants, saying:

The Body of Christ.

The communicant replies:

Amen.
And receives Holy Communion.

While the Priest is receiving the Body of Christ, the Communion Chant begins.

When the distribution of Communion is over, the Priest or a Deacon or an acolyte purifies
the paten over the chalice and also the chalice itself.

While he carries out the purification, the Priest says quietly:

What has passed our lips as food, O Lord,

may we possess in purity of heart,
that what has been given to us in time
may be our healing for eternity.
Then the Priest may return to the chair. If appropriate, a sacred silence may be observed
for a while, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be sung.

28
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Then, standing at the altar or at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined, the
Priest says:

Let us pray.
All pray in silence with the Priest for a while, unless silence has just been observed. Then
the Priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer after Communion, at the end of which
the people acclaim:

Amen.

29
THE CONCLUDING RITES
If they are necessary, any brief announcements to the people follow here.

Then the dismissal takes place. The Priest, facing the people and extending his hands,
says:

The Lord be with you.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The Deacon or, in his absence, the Priest himself, says the invitation:

Bow down for the blessing.

Then the Priest, with hands extended over the people, says the blessing:

May God,
who through the childbearing of the Blessed Virgin Mary
willed in his great kindness to redeem the human race,
be pleased to enrich you with his blessing.
The people reply:

Amen.
Priest:

May you know always and everywhere the protection of her,

through whom you have been found worthy
to receive the author of life.
The people reply:

Amen.

30
Priest:

May you, who have devoutly gathered on this day,

carry away with you the gifts of spiritual joys
and heavenly rewards.
The people reply:

Amen.
The Priest blesses the people, saying:

A nd may the blessing of almighty God,

the Father, and the Son, X and the Holy Spirit,
come down on you and remain with you for ever.
The people reply:

Amen.

DISMISSAL
To dismiss the people the Deacon or, if there is no Deacon, the Priest himself sings or
says:

G o in peace,
glorifying the Lord by your life.
The people reply:

Thanks be to God.
Then the Priest venerates the altar as usual with a kiss, as at the beginning. After making
a profound bow with the ministers, he withdraws.

MISA DE AGUINALDO
(Formularies and Readings)
DECEMBER 16
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today we begin a beloved and joyful Christmas tradition
— the Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo or Simbang Gabi.
Masses will be celebrated
in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary
for nine consecutive mornings,
with the baby in her womb
as the focus of every liturgical reading.

Let us prepare for Jesus’ coming

by heeding Advent’s call for repentaance,
reflecting on God’s word,
and living the Christmas spirit of joy and generosity.
Let us pray more intensely for the Filipino family
and for peace in our country.

35
COLLECT

O God, who willed that at the message of an Angel

your Word should take flesh
in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
grant that we, who pray to you
and believe her to be truly the Mother of God,
may be helped by her interceding before you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
or December 16 of Phil. RM, p. 1268-1269:

L et your tireless grace accompany us, Lord God,

let it go before us and follow after,
that in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary
we who long for the coming of your Son
may be sustained by your love
in this life and in the life to come.
Grant this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 56:1-3. 6-8

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

T hus says the LORD:

Observe what is right, do what is just;
for my salvation is about to come,
my justice, about to be revealed.
Blessed is the man who does this,
the son of man who holds to it;
Who keeps the sabbath free from profanation,
and his hand from any evildoing.
Let not the foreigner say,
when he would join himself to the LORD,
“The LORD will surely exclude me from his people.”
The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,
ministering to him,
Loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants
— All who keep the sabbath free from profanation
and hold to my covenant,
Them I will bring to my holy mountain
and make joyful in my house of prayer;
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be acceptable on my altar.
For my house shall be called
a house of prayer for all peoples.
Thus says the Lord GOD,
who gathers the dispersed of Israel:
Others will I gather to him besides those already gathered.

The Word of the Lord.

37
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 67:2-3. 5. 7-8

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May God have pity on us and bless us;

may he let his face shine upon us.
So may your way be known upon earth;
among all nations, your salvation.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May the nations be glad and exult

because you rule the peoples in equity;
the nations on the earth you guide.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

The earth has yielded its fruits;

God, our God, has blessed us.
May God bless us,
and may all the ends of the earth fear him!

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

38
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Come, Lord, bring us your peace
that we may rejoice before you with a perfect heart.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL John 5:33-36

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

J esus said to the Jews:

“You sent emissaries to John,
and he testified to the truth.
I do not accept testimony from a human being,
but I say this so that you may be saved.
John was a burning and shining lamp,
and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.
But I have testimony greater than John’s.
The works that the Father gave me to accomplish,
these works that I perform testify on my behalf
that the Father has sent me.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

39
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Let us pray to the heavenly Father that,

reflecting the light of the Lord Jesus,
we may also become like lighted lamps
for men and women, as John the Baptist was.
With confidence, we pray:

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That as a Church we may celebrate the Misa de Gallo

with praise and thanksgiving to God
for the gift of faith and our love and devotion
to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

May our government and Church leaders

work towards helping our country
rise above the evils of corruption, division, and violence.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

May families, communities, and the whole nation

work for goodwill and reconciliation
as we all prepare for the Lord’s coming
with peaceful and joyful hearts.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

40
That every Misa de Gallo in which we participate
fill us with joy and peace,
and that we may share them with every person
—the desperate, the lonely, and the unforgiven
that they too may experience the joy of Christmas.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That the faithful departed may find pardon and peace

and be numbered among the saints in heaven.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

In the silence of our hearts,

let us pray for our personal intentions.
(Silence) We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Lord,
fill our hearts with your love.
As we prepare for the coming of your Son as man,
lift our minds in watchful hope and in fervent prayer.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

41
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

A ccept, O Lord, these offerings,

and by your power
change them into the Sacrament of salvation,
in which, fulfilling the sacrifices of the Fathers,
is offered the true Lamb, Jesus Christ your Son,
born of the ever-Virgin Mary in a way beyond all telling.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 16 of Phil. RM, p. 1268-1269:

G od our strength,
in you is our hope of salvation.
As we present these gifts,
renew your joy within us
and make us a living sacrifice of praise.
We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

M ay the mysteries we have received, O Lord our God,

always show forth your mercy in us,
that we, who commemorate in faith the Mother of your Son,
may be saved by his Incarnation.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 16 of Phil. RM, p. 1268-1269:

O God,
we have received in word and sacrament
the One whose coming John the Baptist so urgently announced.
By the presence of Christ among us, reform our lives
and give us courage to announce in the world
that your kingdom is near.
42 We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord.
DECEMBER 17
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today’s Gospel presents to us
the genealogy of our Lord Jesus.
Jesus’ lineage is not something anyone can be proud of
because it includes people
that are ‘unknown,’ sinners and women.
However, this is precisely the point:
that Jesus as Son of God
enters into the human family
and that He did not exempt himself
from belonging to a checkered history,
to a lineage that dwelt in both lights and shadows.

Advent is a joyful season

when we can take a second look at our families
and see them hopefully as Jesus looks at all of us
—always with hope and charity, emphasizing our lights
rather than our shadows, and telling us how it is all right,
just perfectly all right, to be at home with the baby at the crib,
in the process discovering how it is to be a child,
to be the hope of one’s own ancestry again.

43
COLLECT

O God, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary,

foremost among the poor and humble,
to be the Mother of the Savior,
grant, we pray, that, following her example,
we may offer you the homage of sincere faith
and place in you all our hope of salvation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
or December 17 of Phil. RM, p. 1270:

C reator and Redeemer of the human race,

it was your holy will that your Word should take flesh
in the womb of the ever-Virgin Mary.
Look with kindness on our prayers
and grant that your only Son,
who came to share our human nature,
may lead us to share in his divine life.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Genesis 49:2. 8-10

A reading from the Book of Genesis

J acob called his sons and said to them:

“Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob,
listen to Israel, your father.
“You, Judah, shall your brothers praise
-your hand on the neck of your enemies;
the sons of your father shall bow down to you.
Judah, like a lion’s whelp,
you have grown up on prey, my son.
He crouches like a lion recumbent,
the king of beasts-who would dare rouse him?
The scepter shall never depart from Judah,
or the mace from between his legs,
While tribute is brought to him,
and he receives the people’s homage.”

The Word of the Lord.

45
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 72:1-2. 3-4. 7-8. 17

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

O God, with your judgment endow the king,

and with your justice, the king’s son;
He shall govern your people with justice
and your afflicted ones with judgment.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

The mountains shall yield peace for the people,

and the hills justice.
He shall defend the afflicted among the people,
save the children of the poor.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

Justice shall flower in his days,

and profound peace, till the moon be no more.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

May his name be blessed forever;

as long as the sun his name shall remain.
In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed;
all the nations shall proclaim his happiness.

46 R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O Wisdom of our God Most High,
guiding creation with power and love:
come to teach us the path of knowledge!
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

We bring our petitions before the heavenly Father who,

in his great love for us has sent his Son,
so that we may be saved and come to the knowledge of truth.
With confidence, we pray:

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That the Church,

embracing saints and sinners alike in her bosom,
may strengthen herself by encouraging her children
to incessantly pursue the path of penance and renewal.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That we may allow neither the sins and scandals

in our family life and in the Church
nor the corruption in our community and society
to overcome the goodness and goodwill in our hearts.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That members of families who are separated

by distance, misunderstanding, or apathy
may experience homecoming, reconciliation,
and togetherness this holy season of Christmas.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

49
That our participation in the Misa de Gallo
may promote among us a spirituality of communion,
making us able to share the joys and sufferings
of our brothers and sisters
in the community and in the parish.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

That those who have died may be forgiven of their sins

and rest in peace in the Kingdom of God.

You who live and reign for ever and ever.
Amen.

50
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Through Christ our Lord.
or December 17 of Phil. RM, p. 1270:

G od of power,
you have fed us with heavenly gifts.
Fill us now with this desire:

DECEMBER 18
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

the Gospel recounts the annunciation to Joseph,
whom God chooses to be the legal father of Jesus
and the guardian of the Holy Family.
We admire Joseph for his attentiveness
and docility to the voice of God.
After receiving the angel’s message,
Joseph does everything the Lord wants him to do.
Joseph takes Mary and the Child under his care.

52
COLLECT

O God, who, fulfilling the promise made to our Fathers,

chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
to become the Mother of the Savior,
grant that we may follow her example,
for her humility was pleasing to you
and her obedience profitable to us.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
or December 18 of Phil. RM, p. 1271:

A ll powerful God,
we are oppressed and weighed down
by the ancient yoke of sin.
Grant that the birth of your only Son,
so long awaited, yet always new,
may deliver us and set us free.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Jeremiah 23:5-8

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

B ehold, the days are coming, says the LORD,

when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David;
As king he shall reign and govern wisely,
he shall do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah shall be saved,
Israel shall dwell in security.
This is the name they give him:
“The LORD our justice.”

Therefore, the days will come, says the LORD,

when they shall no longer say, “As the LORD lives,
who brought the children of Israel
out of the land of Egypt”;
but rather, “As the LORD lives,
who brought the descendants of the house of Israel
up from the land of the north”
and from all the lands to which I banished them;
they shall again live on their own land.

The Word of the Lord.

54
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 72:1-2. 12-13. 18-19

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

O God, with your judgment endow the king,

and with your justice, the king’s son;
He shall govern your people with justice
and your afflicted ones with judgment.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,

and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.
He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;
the lives of the poor he shall save.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,

who alone does wondrous deeds.
And blessed forever be his glorious name;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

R. Justice shall flourish in his time,

and fullness of peace for ever.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O Leader of the House of Israel,
giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai:
come to rescue us with your mighty power! 55
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL Matthew 1:18-25

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

T his is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.

When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,

and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.”

When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

The Gospel of the Lord.

56
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Confident in the Father’s goodness,

we now bring before him our prayers.
Let us pray especially for fathers that they may mirror
the love of the heavenly Father here on earth.
We pray:

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

That our Holy Father Pope Francis, our bishops, priests,

deacons, consecrated persons, and lay leaders
may, like St. Joseph, mirror your love
by their fatherly care of your people, their spiritual children.
We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

That government officials and civil leaders

may be sensitive and discerning of God’s plan
as it unfolds in the events of our national life.
We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

That fathers working abroad or far from home

may remain faithful to their families
and be filled with the consolation of St. Joseph
as they celebrate Christmas away from their loved ones.
We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

57
That those who are undergoing crises
in their personal and family lives
may have the faith and hope of St. Joseph
who sought to see God’s will
in unexpected and even painful realities.
We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

That as we continue to face the difficult economic,

social, and political realities of our nation,
we may hold on to the virtue of hope which does not disappoint.
We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord..

In the silence of our hearts,

let us pray for our personal intentions.
(Silence) We pray.

R. Graciously hear our prayer, O Lord.

Fill us with your Spirit, O Father.

Teach us to do your will that we may become united
as one family under your fatherhood.
This we ask through Christ your Son,
who lives and reigns with you for ever and ever.
Amen.

58
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

A ccept, O Lord, these offerings,

and by your power
change them into the Sacrament of salvation,
in which, fulfilling the sacrifices of the Fathers,
is offered the true Lamb, Jesus Christ your Son,
born of the ever-Virgin Mary in a way beyond all telling.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 18 of Phil. RM, p. 1271:

O Lord,
let the sacrifice to be offered to your name
make us acceptable to you,
that we may share in the immortal life of your Son,
who healed our mortal nature by his death.
Grant this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

M ay the mysteries we have received, O Lord our God,

always show forth your mercy in us,
that we, who commemorate in faith the Mother of your Son,
may be saved by his Incarnation.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 18 of Phil. RM, p. 1271:

I n this gathering of your Church,

the living temple of your presence,
may we find in your mercy, Lord,
and so approach with fitting reverence
the coming feast of our redemption.
Grant this in the name of Jesus our Lord.
59
DECEMBER 19
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

on the fourth day of our Simbang Gabi,
our readings reveals two things about our God:
(1) that God is gracious, and
(2) that He is a God of surprises.
Faithful to his promise of salvation,
God made an impossible possible.

The angel tells Zechariah in effect,

“Just be quiet for a while and watch God work.”
So a sign of silence is given until God performs his word.
Zechariah becomes temporarily mute
until these things come to pass.

This sign is a pointer to the major lesson of this passage:

God will bring his promise to pass.
We must not lose our ability to hope, and to trust in God
because once we lose our ability to hope,
we lose and disregard the power of God.
With the conception of the messenger
who will prepare the way of the Lord,
we are filled with joy and gladness,
for indeed salvation is very close.

60
COLLECT

O God, who were pleased to choose Blessed Mary

as the virginal chamber where your Word would dwell,
grant, we pray, that under her protection,
we may participate joyfully in her commemoration.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
or December 19 of Phil. RM, p. 1272:

G od of life,
in the child who was born of the Virgin Mary
you revealed to the world the radiance of your glory.
Grant that we may celebrate with full and reverent faith
this great mystery of the Word made flesh,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

61
LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Judges 13:2-7. 24-25

A reading from the Book of Judges

T here was a certain man from Zorah,

of the clan of the Danites,
whose name was Manoah.
His wife was barren and had borne no children.
An angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her,
“Though you are barren and have had no children,
yet you will conceive and bear a son.
Now, then, be careful to take no wine or strong drink
and to eat nothing unclean.
As for the son you will conceive and bear,
no razor shall touch his head,
for this boy is to be consecrated to God from the womb.
It is he who will begin the deliverance of Israel
from the power of the Philistines.”
The woman went and told her husband,
“A man of God came to me;
he had the appearance of an angel of God,
terrible indeed. I did not ask him where he came from,
nor did he tell me his name. But he said to me,
‘You will be with child and will bear a son.
So take neither wine nor strong drink,
and eat nothing unclean.
For the boy shall be consecrated to God from the womb,
until the day of his death.’”
The woman bore a son and named him Samson.
The boy grew up and the LORD blessed him;
the Spirit of the LORD stirred him.
62 The Word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 71:3-4. 5-6. 16-17

R. My mouth shall be filled with your praise,

and I will sing your glory!

Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety,

for you are my rock and my fortress.
O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked.

R. My mouth shall be filled with your praise,

and I will sing your glory!

For you are my hope, O LORD;

my trust, O God, from my youth.
On you I depend from birth;
from my mother’s womb you are my strength.

R. My mouth shall be filled with your praise,

and I will sing your glory!

I will treat of the mighty works of the LORD;

O God, I will tell of your singular justice.
O God, you have taught me from my youth,
and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds.

R. My mouth shall be filled with your praise,

and I will sing your glory!

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O Root of Jesse’s stem,
sign of God’s love for all his people:
come to save us without delay!
R. Alleluia, alleluia. 63
GOSPEL Luke 1:5-25

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

I n the days of Herod, King of Judea,

there was a Presider named Zechariah
of the Presiderly division of Abijah;
his wife was from the daughters of Aaron,
and her name was Elizabeth.
Both were righteous in the eyes of God,
observing all the commandments
and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren
and both were advanced in years.

Once when he was serving as Presider

in his division’s turn before God,
according to the practice of the Presiderly service,
he was chosen by lot
to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense.
Then, when the whole assembly of the people
was praying outside
at the hour of the incense offering,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him,
standing at the right of the altar of incense.
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw,
and fear came upon him.

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah,

because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you shall name him John.
And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth,
64 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
He will drink neither wine nor strong drink.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit
even from his mother’s womb,
and he will turn many of the children of Israel
to the Lord their God.
He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah
to turn the hearts of fathers toward children
and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous,
to prepare a people fit for the Lord.”

Then Zechariah said to the angel,

“How shall I know this?
For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”
And the angel said to him in reply,
“I am Gabriel, who stand before God.
I was sent to speak to you
and to announce to you this good news.
But now you will be speechless and unable to talk
until the day these things take place,
because you did not believe my words,
which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah

and were amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.
But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them,
and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary.
He was gesturing to them but remained mute.
Then, when his days of ministry were completed,
he went home.
After this time his wife Elizabeth conceived,
and she went into seclusion for five months, saying,
“So has the Lord done for me at a time when he has seen fit
to take away my disgrace before others.”

The Gospel of the Lord. 65

DECEMBER 20

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the last before Christmas,
invites us to reflect on the annunciation
of the Lord’s birth to the Virgin Mary.
Because of her openness to God’s promise,
her deep faith, and her willingness to serve,
Mary becomes a model of one
who is truly prepared to welcome the Savior.

As St. John Paul II wrote:

“Mary guides us towards Bethlehem.
Mary is the Woman of the ‘yes’ who, contrary to Eve,
makes the plan of God her own without reservation.
Thus she becomes a clear light for our steps
and the highest model for our inspiration.”

69
COLLECT

P our forth, we beseech you, O Lord,

your grace into our hearts,
that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son
was made known by the message of an Angel,
may by his Passion and Cross
be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING 2 Samuel 7:1-5. 8-12. 14. 16

A reading from the second Book of Samuel

W hen King David was settled in his palace,

and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies
on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
“Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!”
Nathan answered the king,
“Go, do whatever you have in mind,
for the LORD is with you.”
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?

“’It was I who took you from the pasture

and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
I will fix a place for my people Israel;
I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance.
Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them
as they did of old,
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
I will give you rest from all your enemies.
The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
71
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his kingdom firm.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your kingdom
shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.”

The Word of the Lord.

72
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 89:2-3. 4-5. 27. 29

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

The promises of the LORD 1 will sing forever;

through all generations
my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”;
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one,

I have sworn to David my servant:
forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations.”

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,

my God, the Rock, my savior.’
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm.”

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

SECOND READING Romans 16:25-27

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans

B rothers and sisters:

To him who can strengthen you,
according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ,
according to the revelation of the mystery
kept secret for long ages
but now manifested through the prophetic writings and,
according to the command of the eternal God,
made known to all nations to bring about
the obedience of faith,
to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ
be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of the Lord.

74
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Luke 1:38

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL Luke 1:26-38

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

T he angel Gabriel was sent from God

to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.

“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,

and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”

75
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

The Gospel of the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

As the day of the Savior’s coming draws near,

let us intensify our prayers and like Mary,
open our hearts to our heavenly Father
so that we may become a faith-filled people
longing for the dawn of salvation.
With hope-filled joy, we pray:

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

Like the Virgin Mary, may the Church, the People of God,
be ready to welcome Christ the Savior
in their hearts this Christmas
and share it joyfully with others.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

Like the Virgin Mary, may government and civil leaders

heed the message of God’s word
and serve the common good of all.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

May the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary

help the poor, the disadvantaged, the lonely and abandoned,
and may they experience the Lord’s consolation
through the efforts of people who minister to them.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

77
Like the Virgin Mary,
may our families be active in their faith and prayer
through partaking of the sacraments,
especially the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance,
and in service to the needy.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

Like the Virgin Mary, may consecrated men and women

always give their “yes” to God with joy and enthusiasm.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

May the Lord welcome to the joy of Paradise

those who have gone ahead of us.
We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

In the silence of our hearts,

let us pray for our personal intentions.
(Silence) We pray.

R. Lord, listen to our prayer.

Father,

Fill us with deep faith and joy
as we prepare to receive Christ like Mary.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

M ay the Holy Spirit, O Lord,

sanctify these gifts laid upon your altar,
just as he filled with his power
the womb of the blessed Virgin Mary.
Through Christ our Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

H aving received this pledge of eternal redemption,

we pray, almighty God,

so we may press forward all the more eagerly
to the worthy celebration of the mystery of your Son’s Nativity.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

DECEMBER 21
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today we pray to the Father
to grant us the grace
to recognize his Son when he comes.
Like Elizabeth who welcomed the pregnant Mary,
and the child in her womb,
who lept for joy in the womb,
may we be sensitive always to his presence in our lives.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Song of Songs 2:8-14

A reading from the Song of Songs

H ark! my lover — here he comes

springing across the mountains,
leaping across the hills.
My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Here he stands behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
peering through the lattices.
My lover speaks; he says to me,
“Arise, my beloved, my dove, my beautiful one, and come!

“For see, the winter is past,

the rains are over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of pruning the vines has come,
and the song of the dove is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth its figs,
and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance.
Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!
“O my dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the secret recesses of the cliff,
Let me see you,
let me hear your voice,
For your voice is sweet,
and you are lovely.”

The Word of the Lord.

82
or: Zephaniah 3:14-18

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah

S hout for joy, O daughter Zion!

Sing joyfully, O Israel!
Be glad and exult with all your heart,
O daughter Jerusalem!
The LORD has removed the judgment against you,
he has turned away your enemies;
The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst,
you have no further misfortune to fear.
On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!
The LORD, your God, is in your midst,
a mighty savior;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
and renew you in his love,
He will sing joyfully because of you,
as one sings at festivals.

The Word of the Lord.

83
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 33:2-3. 11-12. 20-21

R. Exult, you just, in the Lord!

Sing to him a new song.

Give thanks to the LORD on the harp;

with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises.
Sing to him a new song;
pluck the strings skillfully, with shouts of gladness.

R. Exult, you just, in the Lord!

Sing to him a new song.

But the plan of the LORD stands forever;

the design of his heart, through all generations.
Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he has chosen for his own inheritance.

R. Exult, you just, in the Lord!

Sing to him a new song.

Our soul waits for the LORD,

who is our help and our shield,
For in him our hearts rejoice;
in his holy name we trust.

R. Exult, you just, in the Lord!

Sing to him a new song.

GOSPEL Luke 1:39-45

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

M ary set out in those days

and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting
reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

We pray.

R. Lord, hear your people.

May our homes be havens of love

DECEMBER 22
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today’s Gospel focuses on Mary’s song of praise
— the Magnificat.
The Magnificat is not only a song
but also a prophetic word and witness.
What the Lord has done for Mary,
his lowly maidservant,
he will also do for his people.
May the Eucharist help us grow
in our commitment to be a Church of the Poor.
May solidarity with the lowly and the poor
be our mission, our service,
and our mark of fidelity to Christ.

89
COLLECT

O God, who, fulfilling the promise made to our Fathers,

chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
to become the Mother of the Savior,

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING 1 Samuel 1:24-28

A reading from the first Book of Samuel

I n those days,
Hannah brought Samuel with her,
along with a three-year-old bull,
an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine,
and presented him at the temple of the LORD in Shiloh.
After the boy’s father had sacrificed the young bull,
Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:
“Pardon, my lord!
As you live, my lord,
I am the woman who stood near you here,
praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD granted my request.
Now I, in turn, give him to the LORD;
as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD.”
She left Samuel there.

The Word of the Lord.

91
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 1 Samuel 2:1. 4-5. 6-7. 8

R. My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

“My heart exults in the LORD,

my horn is exalted in my God.
I have swallowed up my enemies;
I rejoice in my victory.”

R. My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

“The bows of the mighty are broken,

while the tottering gird on strength.
The well-fed hire themselves out for bread,
while the hungry batten on spoil.
The barren wife bears seven sons,
while the mother of many languishes.”

R. My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

“The LORD puts to death and gives life;

he casts down to the nether world; he raises up again.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich,
he humbles, he also exalts.”

R. My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

“He raises the needy from the dust;

from the dung heap he lifts up the poor,
To seat them with nobles
and make a glorious throne their heritage.”

R. My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O King of all nations and keystone of the Church:

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL Luke 1:46-56

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

M ary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.”
Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months
and then returned to her home.

The Gospel of the Lord.

93
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

As we make Mary’s Magnificat our own song,

let us pray for the spirit of humility
that the Lord may lift us up.
Mindful of our weaknesses
but confident in the Lord’s mercy and power,
we pray:

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

May the Church strive to be a Church of the Poor,

where the poor, equal to all others in Christian dignity,
not only are evangelized but become evangelizers themselves.
We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

May those who serve in public office

abandon profligacy, nepotism, and corruption;
may they seek the common good
and practice transparency and accountability in governance.
We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

May those who work for justice and peace

and care for the weak
persevere in their work,
knowing that they bring your love among the people.
We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

94
May the proud, the mighty, and the self-righteous
fear and reverence God who brings down the mighty,
and identifies with the humble and the poor.
We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

Inspired by the Magnificat,

may our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary
keep from turning into sterile pietism but lead us instead
to imitate her who speaks for the poor of the Lord.
We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

In the silence of our hearts,

let us pray for our personal intentions.
(Silence) We pray.

R. Lord, look tenderly on your people.

Father,
strengthen us in adversity
and comfort us in our sorrow.
Give us new life and hope
as we strive to live in your presence.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

and by your power
change them into the Sacrament of salvation,
in which, fulfilling the sacrifices of the Fathers,
is offered the true Lamb, Jesus Christ your Son,
born of the ever-Virgin Mary in a way beyond all telling.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 22 of Phil. RM, p. 1275:

W ith confidence in your mercy, Lord God,

we hasten to place these gifts on your holy altar,
that your grace may cleanse us from sin
through the very sacrament
by which we offer you true worship.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

M ay the mysteries we have received, O Lord our God,

always show forth your mercy in us,
that we, who commemorate in faith the Mother of your Son,
may be saved by his Incarnation.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
or December 22 of Phil. RM, p. 1275:

L ord God,
may our sharing in your sacrament
be for us a source of strength,
so that when the savior comes,
we may welcome him with holy lives
and obtain the prize of unending happiness.
96 Grant this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
DECEMBER 23
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today’s Gospel describes
the birth and the naming of John.
Relatives and neighbors assume
that the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth
will be named after his father.
Instead, in obedience to God’s will,
the child is given the name John,
which means “God is gracious.”

May our names,

like the names of John, Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
leave a smile in the hearts
of those whose lives we have touched.
May our names never remind anyone
of bitter experience with us,
but only good and happy memories.

97
COLLECT

O God, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary,

foremost among the poor and humble,
to be the Mother of the Savior,
grant, we pray, that, following her example,
we may offer you the homage of sincere faith
and place in you all our hope of salvation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Malachi 3: 1-4. 23-24

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Malachi

T hus says the Lord GOD:

Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Lo, I will send you Elijah, the prophet,

Before the day of the LORD comes,
the great and terrible day,
To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
and the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the land with doom.

The Word of the Lord.

99
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 25:4-5. 8-9. 10. 14

R. Lift up your heads and see;

your redemption is near at hand.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;

teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior.

R. Lift up your heads and see;

your redemption is near at hand.

Good and upright is the LORD;

thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice,
he teaches the humble his way.

R. Lift up your heads and see;

your redemption is near at hand.

All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy

toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him,
and his covenant, for their instruction.

R. Lift up your heads and see;

your redemption is near at hand.

GOSPEL Luke 1:57-66

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

W hen the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child

she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father
what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote,” John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?”
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

especially those persecuted for being his disciples.
We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

In the silence of our hearts,

let us pray for our personal intentions.
(Silence) We pray.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Loving Father,
watch over your people.
May we strive to please you at all times.
This we ask through your Christ our Lord.
Amen.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

R eceive, O Lord, the offerings of our devotion,

and grant that we, who celebrate
your Son’s work of boundless charity,
may, through the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
be confirmed in love of you and of our neighbor.
Through Christ our Lord.
or December 23 of Phil. RM, p. 1276:

L ord God,
let the sacrifice you have given
as the full expression of the Church’s worship
establish us firmly in your peace,
that we may celebrate with untroubled hearts
the coming birth of our savior,
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

G rant to your Church, O Lord,

that, strengthened by the power of this Sacrament,
she may eagerly walk in the pathways of the Gospel,
until she reaches the blessed vision of peace,
which the Virgin Mary, your lowly handmaid,
already enjoys eternally in glory.
Through Christ our Lord.
or December 23 of Phil. RM, p. 1276:

G rant pardon and peace, O Lord,

to those you have fed with heavenly gifts,
so that, at the coming of your beloved Son,
we may hasten to greet him
104 with lamps alight in our hands.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
DECEMBER 24
The Priest, or a Deacon or another minister, may very briefly introduce the faithful to
the Mass of the day.

B rothers and sisters,

today, the last day of the Misa de Gallo,
we hear in the Gospel Zechariah’s Benedictus.
Although the canticle is a praise of God
for his work of salvation
which has its high point in the birth of John the Baptist,
the eyes of Zechariah do not focus on his son,
but rather on the main character.
The birth of John the Baptist
is like the appearance of the dawn in the horizon.
The dawn heralds the greater light, the light of day.
John may be compared to streaks of light,
preceding the brightness of Day—Jesus: the “Sun of Justice.”

As we experience the travails of our own time,

let us never let anxiety, sin, and hopelessness overcome us.
The Gospel cannot be more emphatic: wait and hope!
The Lord is faithful, and he will come to our help.
He will delay no longer.

105
COLLECT

O God, who willed that at the message of an Angel

your Word should take flesh
in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
grant that we, who pray to you
and believe her to be truly the Mother of God,
may be helped by her interceding before you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
or December 24 of Phil. RM, p. 1277:

C ome quickly, Lord Jesus, do not delay!

We entrust ourselves to your love:
strengthen us by your coming and raise us up,
you who live and reign with the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING 2 Samuel 7:1-5. 8-12. 14. 16

A reading from the second Book of Samuel

W hen King David was settled in his palace,

and the LORD had given him rest
from his enemies on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
“Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!”
Nathan answered the king,
“Go, do whatever you have in mind,
for the LORD is with you.”
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?

“‘It was I who took you from the pasture

and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
I will fix a place for my people Israel;
I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance.
Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them
as they did of old,
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
I will give you rest from all your enemies.

107
The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his Kingdom firm.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your Kingdom
shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.’”

The Word of the Lord.

108
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalms 89:2-3. 4-5. 27. 29

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

The favors of the LORD I will sing forever;

through all generations my mouth
shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”;
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one,

I have sworn to David my servant:
Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your
throne for all generations.”

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,

my God, the rock, my savior.’
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm.”

R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O Radiant Dawn,
splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:
come and shine on those who dwell in darkness
and in the shadow of death.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL Luke 1:67-79

X A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Z echariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit,

prophesied, saying:
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

The Gospel of the Lord.
