Economic Growth and Tourism in Egypt

Egypt was known throughout history as a destination for tourists and

travelers. Greek and Roman writers traveled through Egypt and left not
only their marks on monuments, but detailed accounts of customs,
practices, and religious beliefs. Herodotus, who visited Egypt about 450
BC. wrote: "Egypt is the gift of the Nile."

The Economic Importance of Tourism
The word “tour” is derived from the Latin word “tornaro” and the
Greek word “tornos”, meaning, the movement around a central point or
axis. The World Tourism Organization define tourist as “people travelling
to and staying ‫صورة‬
in places outside their usual environment ‫صورة‬for leisure,
business and other purposes”.
It is very well known that tourism is a strategic economic activity for
any state. As for Egypt, tourism is a key pillar of Egypt's economy.
Tourism became an important sector of the economy from 1975 onwards,
as Egypt eased visa restrictions for almost all European and North
American countries and established embassies in new countries
like Finland.
The income of Egypt derived from tourism increased from $300
million in 1982 to $3.8 billion in 1997, reflecting the growth of number of
tourists from one million to 4.2 million over the same period.
In 2015 tourism sector increased by 3.7%, and the tourism sector
held a total of 284 million jobs in 2015.

Monuments and Antiquities in Egypt
Egypt hosts the world's most extensive collection of discovered
Pharaonic monuments and antiquities. It also contains a Greco-Roman
collection referred to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, as well as unique
Islamic collection.
Luxor is the world's greatest open - air museum, filled with the
amazing monuments of ancient civilization. It contains nearly one third
(1/3) of the world's antiquities.
International Tourism and the Number of Arrivals
There are three distinct categories of tourists exist in Egypt. They
are grouped according to origin, destination, and aim of the visit. First
are tourists coming from Europe. They visit Egypt to enjoy environment
in the Red Sea, and visit the monuments in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.
The second group of tourists is the Arabs who visit Egypt, especially
Cairo and Alexandria, during the summer for entertainment. The last
category is the rich Egyptians and foreigners living in Egypt. They often
spend their holidays at various resorts spread all over Egypt.
Over the last 12 months, Egypt’s tourism industry has witnessed
remarkable growth, with arrivals up 57.5% from 11.3 million in 2018 to
17.8 million in 2019. I hope that the rate would reach 100%.
