SOCIALIZATION
 It is the process that introduces people to social norms
and customs. This process helps individuals function well
in society, and, in turn, helps society run smoothly. Family
members, teachers, religious leaders, and peers all play
roles in a person’s socialization.
 It is how we learn the norms and beliefs of our society.
From our earliest family and play experiences, we are
made aware of societal values and expectations.
 It happens almost each and every moment of our life
whether we are at home, in a park interacting with
neighbors or in school setting.

Enculturation
 Refers to the process through which we learn about the
culture we live in. Through enculturation, we learn what
behaviors, values, language, and morals are acceptable in
our society. We learn by observing other members of our
society, including our parents, friends, teachers, and
mentors.
Acculturation
 It is the process by which people learn the requirements of
their surrounding culture and acquire the values and
behaviors appropriate or necessary in that culture.

Goals of Socialization
1. Socialization teaches impulse control and helps individuals
develop a conscience.

Important of Socialization
1. Nearly all human behavior is learned.
2. Socialization – cultural process of learning to participate in

5. Without socialization infants cannot develop the set of
attitude, beliefs, values and behaviors associated with being an
individual.

Socialization can be described from two points of view:


1. Objective Socialization- refers to the society acting upon
the child.
2. Subjective Socialization- The process by which society
transmits its culture from one generation to the next and adapts
the individual to the accepted and approved ways of organized
social life.

Two Phases of Socialization


A. Primary socialization occurs when a child learns the
attitudes, values and actions appropriate to individuals as
members of a particular culture. This is mainly influenced by
the immediate family and friends. Example, Toilet training of

B. Secondary socialization is the process of learning what is the
appropriate behavior as a member of a smaller group within the
larger society. For example, as new employees become
socialized in an organization, they learn about its history,
values, jargon, culture and procedures.

AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION- It refers to the specific


individuals, groups, and institutions that enable socialization to
take place

1. FAMILY is the first agent of socialization. Mothers and


fathers, siblings and grandparents, plus members of an
extended family, all teach a child what he or she needs to
know.
For example, they show the child how to use objects (such
as clothes, computers, eating utensils, books, bikes) how
to relate with others your role to raise one, socialization
involves teaching and learning about unending array of
objects and ideas.
 People first learn the tangible objects of material culture in
these settings, as well as being introduced to the beliefs
and values of society.

4. MASS MEDIA refers to the distribution of impersonal
information to a wide audience, via television, newspapers,
radio, and the internet.
