Introduction
Children aged 5 to 10 years are still growing, which means they need the
energy (calories) and nutrients that come from a varied and balanced
diet. If the child is underweight, they may not be getting enough
calories.
As a parent, it can be difficult to tell them that there child underweight .If
the child is in Year 6 (ages 10 and 11), they may have already been
weighed and their height measured as part of the national child
measurement program.

Failure to thrive indicates insufficient weight gain or inappropriate weight

loss in pediatric patients unless the term is more precisely defined. In
children , it is usually defined in terms of weight, and can be evaluated
either by a low weight for the child's age , or by a low rate of increase in
the weight.

Inappropriate weight loss is suggested by a fal in one or more weight

centile spaces on world health organization (who) growth chart depending
on when weight is below the 2nd percentile of weight fire aage
irrespective of birth weight.

Weight loss after birth is normal and most babies return to their birth
weight by three weeks of age. Clinical assessment for inappropriate
weight loss is recommended for babies who lose more than 10% of their
birth weight or do not return to their birth weight after three weeks.
Inappropriate weight loss is also called as Failure to thrive is not a
disease, but a sign of inadequate nutrition which leads to malnutrition.
All children need the energy (calories) and nutrients that come from a
varied and balanced diet.

If the child is underweight, it may be tempting to fill them up with high-

calorie but unhealthy foods, such as sweets, cake, chocolate and sugary
and fatty foods and drinks must be avoided . However, it's important that
the child gains weight in a healthy way, and this means eating a balanced
diet.
Once the child is 5, they should be eating a healthy, low-fat diet like
the one recommended for adults.

Even if a child is underweight, it's still important that they're physically

active.
Physical activity helps them develop strong, healthy bones and muscles.
It's an important part of how they learn about themselves and the world.
And, best of all, it's great fun.
Children over 5 should do a minimum of 60 minutes of activity each day.
But the amount of physical activity your child should do may be different
if they're underweight.

Background of the Study

The prevalence of underweight in children under five years of age
reflects child growth. It is measured as the percentage of children less
than five years of age whose weights are more than 2 standard
deviations below the median of a standard population such as that of
NCHS/WHO table of child weights.
Child malnutrition as reflected by body weight increases their risk of
death, inhibits their cognitive development, and affects health status
later in life. Being underweight may also reflect wasting (i.e. low weight-
for-height ratio) and/or stunting (i.e. low height-for-age ratio.

Need for the Study

Inadequate food intake, infections, psychosocial deprivation, the
environment (lack of sanitation and hygiene), social inequality and
perhaps genetics contribute to under weight may leads to
childhood malnutrition
1. Inadequate food intake such as a lack of proteins can lead to
Kwashiorkor, Marasmus and other forms of Protein–energy
malnutrition.
Title of the study:-

improvement of knowledge & attitude about low weight
child between 5-10 years among nursing

Ethical concept
1. Prior written permission will be obtained from local
authority of selected angan wadi .
2. 2.Inform written consent will be taken prior to the selected

anganwadi from sample. students in selected anganwadi's

nagpur.

Conceptual Framework
A framework is the overall conceptual underpinnings of a
study. Every research study has a framework. A conceptual
framework is a theoretical approach to the problems that is
scientifically based and emphasizes the selection,
arrangement and classification of its concept.

Review of literature:-
1. K. Sandhiya (2014):- A compartative study was conducted
on 60 children of 13-14 year to assess to assess The Dietary
Habits of School Children with Underweight and Normal
Weight. This study results shows that majority of normal
weight children followed a good dietary habits compared to
underweight children. And most of the underweight children
had poor dietary habits.
2. Melina Mgongo ,Nikolas A. S. Chotta ,Tamara H.
Hashim, Jacqueline G. Uriyo Damian J. Damian, Babill Stray-
Pedersen ,Sia E. Msuya ,Margareta Wandel and Siri Vangen
(2017):-This study assessed the prevalence and risk factors
associated with underweight, stuntingand wasting among
children aged 0–24 months in six districts of Kilimanjaro
region, northern Tanzania The results of the study point to
the need of a multi-sectoral approach to target child
undernutrition among children less than two years of age .
3. Baithne Nahar , Tahmeed Ahmeshowed that Kenneth H.
Brown, &Md. Iqbal hossain (2010) :-A case control study was
conducted on 6-24 months age children to study the risk
factors associated with server underweight . Children
enrolled in this study were recruited at the time of their
discharge from inpatient treatment for diarrhea & other
acute illness . The result of this study show that the major
risk factors for severe underweight among 6-2 month old
children hospitalized for the treatment of diarrhea were
related to parental education , employment, and income,
child birth other and early child feeding practices

4. Lee D Hudson , Charlotte cumby , Robert E klaber ,

Dasha E nicholls , paul j winyard , Russell M viber. (2013 ) :-
A Telephone survey of an on call was conducted on general
paediatric middle grade doctor to assess low level of
knowledge on the assessment of underweight in children
and adolescents. This study reveals a low level of knowledge
of important clinical feature of paediatric patient presenting
with server underweight, despite the majority of tainnees
having previous experience of managing paediatric patient
with EDs. Knowledge was liye regarding the fatal signs
suggesting cardiovascular compromise and prolonged QTc,
knowledge of important specific complication of the
refeeding syndrome was also low .
6. Stella G. Uzogara (2016):- A Descriptive study
was conducted on underweight the less discuss type
of an healthy weight and its implication on Children
adults and elderly people. This study shows that
underweight is an healthy weight arising from
unintentional weight loss from many causes
especially poor food intake it is prevalent in children
pregnant and lactating women adults and even the
elderly in many countries especially developing
countries
7. Stalin p , joy bazroy , Dinesh Dimri , zile singh,
senthilvel ( 2013) :- a cross sectional study was
conducted on 563 children who were
accomplished by parent on prevalence of
underweight and its risk factor among under five
children. This study shows that almost 50% of
under five years children's are underweight . And
as compared to HUNGaMA survey the prevalence
the prevalence of under weight child in selected
distric was 28% only. Therefore they should be
the primary target for the intervention to fight
against the malnutrition
8. Resham b. Khatri , shiv R. Mishra , Vishnu
Khanal , Bishnu choulsgai (2012) :- a cross
sectional study was conducted on 280 children's
from 90 to households in that total of 280
mothers were included in the analysis to assess
factors associated with underweight among
children of formers kamaiyas in nepal. This study
shows that the proportion of undernutrition
among the children of formerKamaiya families
was higher than the national average. Female
children were more likely to be underweight

on Children's between Age 3 to 5 years on 20
children's to assess the effect of
ashwagandharhrita on underweight . This study
shows that the children improvement in various
respect like weight gain skinfold thickness BMI
for significant then control group and also nidra ,
kshuda and measures of mobility are statistical
significant
Research Methodology
