Code of Conduct

Standard of Conduct

As a member of Sigma Phi Lex Honor Society, you are a public figure responsible for representing your
school district in the most positive way. Your behavior and actions must be exemplary at all times and
befitting the expectations of your peers, advisors, school district administration, community and faculty
council. You must also conduct yourself so as to not impair, but benefit the welfare or educational
opportunities of others.

In addition to the rules and regulations listed in the SPI Student Handbook, the Code of Conduct will also
govern all students who participate in SPI. The Code of Conduct shall apply to any violation on or off
school premises during the course of the school year.

Once you are established as a member of the Sigma Phi Lex, you are expected to uphold this conduct
code until completion of your eligibility or such time that you are no longer a member of SPL.

Violation of any of these standards of conduct may result in discipline, as further described in Part II
below. The failure of a member to report to his or her advisor, within 48 hours, regarding any violation
of the above standards of conduct may also result in discipline, as further described below.

Character

1. Upholds principles of morality and ethics.


2. Shows courtesy, concern and respect for others.
3. Observes instructions and rules, punctuality and faithfulness in obligations both inside and
outside the classroom.
4. Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience of rules, refuses to cheat, and shows an
unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.

Dismissal and Discipline Policy

Dismissal or other discipline may vary depending on the violation.

Warning: The issuance of a written warning.

Hearing: Faculty Council meets for membership review.


Violation of Criminal Law. When a student has engaged in conduct that is in violation of criminal law,
whether the conduct constitutes a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, felony, or any other class of
criminal conduct, the advisor must report that information to the Faculty Council.

First-Time Offenses. Some first-time offenses are serious enough to warrant a hearing, however,
possible considerations will be given in individual circumstances.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Controlled Substances will not be tolerated by the administration of EASD. Any
student who violates this policy will be dismissed immediately and may be referred to the Elizabethtown
officials for legal actions. By law, if a student is not using illegal substances, but is in the presence of
those who are, he or she may be considered guilty by association.

Falling below the required GPA is grounds for dismissal. Members must maintain a 96% weighted GPA.
Grade point averages will be checked at the end of each semester. Students who fall below the required
GPA will receive a written probationary warning and will have one semester to bring the GPA up to the
required level.

At graduation, weighted GPAs below 96% will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. A student cannot be
dismissed from SPL without a Faculty Council review.

Students who fail to complete required service projects will receive a written probationary warning at
the end of the school year. The required projects must be completed during the summer. If a student
has not completed the required hours by graduation, he or she will be required to complete the hours
during the summer after graduation.

Any in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension will result in a review for dismissal by the Faculty
Council.

Definition of SPL Function

A registered student organized NHS function is defined as: any gathering, whether on or off campus,
where the intent or reason to gather is to conduct business or engage in activity related to the
organization’s purpose, and is organized or initiated by members of the organization.

Service

Members will volunteer in at least two activities as a junior and three as a senior. Each activity must be a
minimum of 10 hours each, for a minimum total of 50 hours. The high school principal and chapter
advisor must approve service projects.
Members will be dependable and work well with others.

Leadership

SPL members will demonstrate leadership in promoting school activities.

SPL members will demonstrate academic initiative.

SPL members will successfully hold school offices or positions of responsibility.

SPL members will demonstrate positive leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school activities.
