NO. OF TEACHING DAYS: 12 NO. OF PERIODS: 12

CHAPTER NUMBER AND NAME: 5 – MAGNETISM AND MATTER

SUB TOPICS: Current loop as a magnetic dipole and its magnetic dipole moment, magnetic dipole moment of a
revolving electron, magnetic field intensity due to a magnetic dipole (bar magnet) along its axis and perpendicular to its
axis, Torque on a magnetic dipole (bar magnet) in a uniform magnetic field; bar magnet as an equivalent solenoid,
magnetic field lines; Electromagnets and factors affecting their strengths, permanent magnets. Earth’s magnetic field and
magnetic elements. Para-, dia- and ferro - magnetic substances, with examples.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students will be able to
 Understand the magnetic DIPOLE
 Derive the expression for magnetic field strength at a point due to bar magnet
 Understand the use of bar magnet as an equivalent solenoid
 Derive the expression for potential energy of a magnetic dipole in a magnetic field
 Understand the features of earth’s magnetic field

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Students must have a pre-requisite knowledge of electric dipole, gauss’s law, electric flux, electric potential
