Comparing Densities
Use the information in the table to answer the following questions.

Fluid Density (g/mL) Solid Density (g/cm3)

hydrogen 0.000 09 StyrofoamTM 0.005
helium 0.000 2 cork 0.24
air 0.001 3 oak 0.70
oxygen 0.001 4 sugar 1.59
carbon dioxide 0.002 salt 2.16
ethyl alcohol 0.79 aluminum 2.70
machine oil 0.90 iron 7.87
water 1.00 nickel 8.90
seawater 1.03 copper 8.92
glycerol 1.26 lead 11.34
mercury 13.55 gold 19.32

1. List 3 liquids and 3 solids that float in water

Liquids Solids

Ethyl Alcohol Styrofoam

Machine Oil Cork

xxxxx Oak

2. List 3 liquids and 3 solids that sink in water.

Liquids Solids

Seawater Sugar/Salt

Glycerol Aluminum/Iron/Nickel

Mercury Copper/Lead/Gold

3. Which substance in the table is the most dense? Gold

Is it a solid, liquid or gas at room temperature? Solid

4. Which substance in the table is the least dense? Hydrogen

Is it a solid, liquid or gas at room temperature? Gas
Name: ____________________ Class: _____

5. Write a conclusion about which physical state tends to be the most dense.
Solids tend to be the most dense because their particles are more closely packed
together.

6. Name a substance that is more dense than mercury. Gold

7. You drop three things into a glass of water: a piece of StyrofoamTM, a piece of oak, and a gold ring.
(a) Which will float? Why?
The Styrofoam and Oak will float because their densities are less than the density
of water.

(b) Which will sink? Why?

Gold will sink because its density is greater than the density of water.

8. Which is denser:
(a) carbon dioxide or air? Carbon dioxide
(b) oxygen or air? Oxygen
(c) hydrogen or air? Hydrogen

9. You find a white granular substance in a jar in your cupboard. You suspect that it may be either
sugar or salt. How could you find out without tasting the substance?
To find out the identity of the substance, I would find its mass on a scale; measure
a specific volume in a measuring cup and them divid the mass by the volume
and compare it to the known densities of salt and sugar.

10. Why is it easier to swim in seawater than it is to swim in fresh water?

Its easier to swim in seawater because it is more dense than fresh water. This
means that the particles are closer together so it supports your weight better.

11. A student comes to the conclusion that solids are denser than liquids. Is this conclusion true?
Explain.
Yes, this is true but there are exceptions. Most solids will sink when placed in a
liquid because they have high densities. The particles of solids tend to be very
closely packed together, allowing for more particles to fit into a volume resulting in
high density.
