What I Need to Know

Precautions are necessary to prevent the potential spread of COVID-

19 in school settings; however, care must also be taken to avoid stigmatizing
students and staff who may have been exposed to the virus. It is important to
remember that COVID-19 does not differentiate between borders, ethnicities,
disability status, age or gender. Education settings should continue to be
welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and supportive environments to all.

Thus, the Department of Education designed an Alternative Delivery

Mode , the Adoption of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan for
School Year 2020-2021 in Light of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

As shown below, the Lesson is directed to the attainment of the

learning outcomes:

Lesson Identify Nail Structure and Shapes

Manicuring, once considered a luxury for the few, is now a service

enjoyed by the public. A patron pleased with a professional manicurist is more
likely to become a regular patron for the service, or other beauty services.

Before the manicurist begins the manicure service, consultation with

the patron must be conducted.

The manicurist should have: the knowledge of the structure of hands,

arms and nails of the patron.

What’s In

Below are some signs on following safety procedures and safety

precautions on the hazards and risks in the workplace. Why do we need to
follow safety rules while working in a salon?

It is important to observe safety rules in the salon because it reduces

the likelihood of injury and accidents to customers, employees and you. A
safe work environment with adequate safeguards promotes an employee to
focus on their works instead of the danger or hazard.

What Your Nails Have to Say

Don't be surprised if your doctor takes a look at your nails at your next check
up, even if you're having no problems with them. Fingernails provide good
clues to a person's overall health.

For instance, when the doctor presses your nails, he or she is checking your
blood circulation. By looking at your nails, a doctor may find changes that may
be associated with skin problems, lung disease, anemia, and other medical
conditions.

Definition of Terms

protein of hard epidermal tissues, such as horn, hair, feathers, nails, claws,
hoofs, and the like.
Dermis - the second layer of skin, it contains blood vessels, nerves, hair roots
and sweat glands.
Hyponychium - the epithelium of the nail bed, particularly its proximal part in
the region of the nail root and lunula, forming the nail matrix .

Basic Information About Nail

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NAIL AND ITS STRUCTURE

We need to recognize that the condition of the nail may actually reflect
the general health of the whole body. You need to understand the structure of
the nail and also the structures surrounding the nail.

THE NATURAL NAIL

The natural nail, also known as ONYX is the hard protective plate
composed mainly of keratin, the same fibrous protein found in skin and hair.
The natural nail is located at the end of the finger or toe. It is an appendage
of the skin and part of the integumentary system.
Nail is a plate of keratin that lies on the tips of the fingers and toes. The
main purpose of the nail is to protect the fingers and toes; however, the
fingernail also assists with certain physical activities in daily life.

Below is the diagram of the nail and its structure.

1. The nail body or plate, is the visible portion of the nail that rests upon,
and is attached to the nail bed. The nail body extends from the root to the
free edge. It is the hardened keratin plate that sits on and covers the nail bed.
It is relatively porous and will allow water to pass through it. It is formed by
matrix cells. It appears to be one piece, but is actually constructed of about
100 layers of nail cells.
2. The nail root is at the base of the nail and is embedded underneath
the skin. It is attached to an actively growing tissue known as the matrix.
The nail bed is the living portion of the skin upon which the nail body rests. It
is pinkish in color and It has many blood vessels that provide nourishment
necessary for continued growth of the nail, also supplied with and abundance
of nerves. It is attached to the plate by a thin layer of tissue called the bed
epithelium.
3. The free edge is the end portion of the nail plate that extends from the
tip of the finger or toe.
4. The lunula or half-moon, is located at the base of the nail. The light
whitish color of the lunula is caused by the reflection of light where the matrix
and the connective tissue of the nail bed join. Every nail has a lunula, but
some lunulas are short and remain hidden under the eponychium.
It is also a pearly coloured and crescent shaped is due to the cell being
pushed closely together, the blood capillaries cannot be seen through the
lunula because of this.

STRUCTURES SURROUNDING THE NAIL:

1. CUTICLE: The cuticle is the dead, colorless tissue attached to the natural
nail plate. The cuticle comes from the underside of the skin that lies above
the natural nail plate. A normal cuticle should be loose and pliable. This
prevents entry of foreign material and microorganisms and helps prevent
injury and infection.
2. EPONYCHIUM: The eponychium is the living skin at the base of the
natural nail plate that covers the matrix area. The eponychium is often
confused with the cuticle.
3. HYPONYCHIUM: The hyponychium is the slightly thickened layer of skin
that lies between the fingertip and the and the free edge of the natural nail
plate. It forms a protective barrier that prevents microorganisms from
invading and infecting the nail bed.
4. PERIONYCHIUM: The perionychium is that portion of the epidermis
surrounding the entire nail border.
5. NAIL WALL: The folds of skin overlapping the sides of the nail.
6. NAIL GROOVES: Folds of skin that form the slits, or furrows or tracks, at
either side of the nail or sidewall (also known as lateral nail fold) upon
which the nail moves as it grows.
7. MANTLE/NAIL FOLD: The deep fold of skin in which the nail root is
embedded.

Shapes of Nail
The shape of nail conforms to that of fingertips of an individual.

1. Oval nail - this is common among people with long, perfect nail beds. It
may be styled slightly rounded at the base and slightly pointed at the
fingertips. Most often this type of nail has a natural look and looks very good
in a short-medium length.
2. Round nail - ideal for shorter nails, the nail is allowed to grow out straight
at the sides for approximately 1.5 mm and then the tip is filed into a rounded
shape. This is a strong shape which is great for those who keep their nails
short.
3. Stiletto/ pointed nail- filed away at the sides to a point at the tip; this
shape is very weak as the sides of the nail (which provide the strength) are
totally lost.
4. Squoval - As above, but followed by squaring off the tip, this gives the nail
tip strength over the oval shape.
5. Square nail- The square-shaped nails are the most famous among the
nail shapes. It is created by allowing the nail to grow out straight and then
filing the tip straight across at right angles with the rest of the nail plate.
Getting Nails Into Shape

Here are some subtle clues and hints that will help you decide on the proper
shape, and also some techniques on how to file it just right.

How to file for the oval shape?

Oval shape
To achieve the oval shape, first begin by straightening your sidewalls
and making sure they are even. Then begin filing from the side of the nail
toward the top, using smooth, arching motions with the file. From there, work
your angles on both sides and around the free edge to smooth into the oval
shape you’re looking for. The finished oval should have a nice balance
between the cuticle shape and the free edge.

Square shape
File the side wall straight up and then change the angle to blend.
Repeat this on the other side. Once both sides are finished , use angles to
lightly feather and level the nail to sharpen the corners.

Squoval shape
Ffirst build the nail into square shape so that you can make sure the
sidewalls are straight, tilt the file underneath the corners and file back and
forth from the underneath up.
Round shape
To get the round shape, it is best to file the side walls straight out, and
then to just round out the edges into a nice curved shape.

Pointed shape
The pointed tip requires taking the top of the “I” to a point that meets at
the center of the apex.
What’s More

Activity 1: Fill in the Blank

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer.

1. Free edge is part of the nail that can be filed and shaped. It is an
extension of the that overlaps the hyponychium.
2. are the folds of skin that overlap the sides of the nail. It
holds your nail in place and protects the nail plate edges.
3. Nail bed is the part of the nail that the nail plate on,
also a continuation of the matrix. It is abundantly supplied with blood
vessels and nerves, having numerous parallel ridges which dovetail
exactly with the ridges on the under surface of the nail plate.
4. Matrix is the only living reproducing part of the nail, this is situated
directly below the . New cells form here and continually
push towards to produce the nail plate. It also contains blood vessels
and nerves. Blood supply provides the cells with nourishment. If the
matrix is damaged the nail will grow deformed.
5. is a visible nail that rests on the nail bed up to the free
edge. This is made up from dead cells and minimum amount of
moisture.

Activity 2.
Note: You can take a video if you have cellphones or you can let your
parents watch and check your nails.

Trim your nails

Trimming of nail plays a very vital role. It is very easy task but sometime it
causes little problems such as unwanted abrasions and ingrown nails, when
done not properly Apply the following steps while cutting nails.

Step 01:
Prepare the types of instruments for this task. Nail cutter, who has small or
medium slightly curved blades, which are suitable for trimming the finger nails.
Nail cutters with straight blades are suitable for use.
Step 02:
Before using your nail cutter, make sure that it is clean. Wash your nail cutter
to remove dust and germs, especially when you are sharing your nail cutter
with someone else. Dry thoroughly after washing it.
Step 03:
Wash your hands. Wipe dry with any towel or tissue paper to remove extra
water. This process cleans your fingernails, and beside cleaning fingernails it
also helps in softening your nails and easier to cut them.
Step 04:
You must cut your nails in a place where you can clearly see what you are
doing. Put a small container near you in which you can collect the nails.
Step 05:
Decide the shape of your nails. Decide which shape you actually want. After
deciding, lift the nail cutter and start cutting your nails.
Step 06:
Start cutting your nails starting from your little finger,
Step 07
Click on the nail cutter that can cut through the nail. You can make at least
two or three cuts of a fingernail until everything is snug. Follow the curve of
the nail to get a clean cut. Check skin flaps after each cut and remove
carefully.
Step 08:
Sit comfortably and crouch your knee side to easily reach up and see the nails
clearly. Be sure not to set up deep razor to prevent scratches. Adjust the
position of razor if you feel any discomfort.
Step 09:
After cutting your nails, use a nail file to smooth any rough and odd surface of
newly trimmed nails. When you file, do it in on tilt – from the corner of the nail
to go down.

Step 10:
Apply some moisturizer on your hands to keep the cuticles moisturized and
smooth.
