Determine the minimum passing sight distance required for a passenger car

travelling with an acceleration of 6 kphps and a speed of 100 kph to

overtake a truck travelling with a speed of 80 kph on a rural two-way two-
lane highway? Assuming time of initial maneuver 4 sec and time passing
vehicle is traveling in left time 10 sec.

Solution:-

m = 100 – 80 = 20 kph
at 1
d1 = 0.278t(v-m+ 2 ¿

(6) (4 )
(
d1 = 0.278 ( 4 ) 100−20+
2 ) =102.3 m

d2 = 0.278vt2

d2 = 0.278(100)(10) = 278m

d3 = 60m since , it varies between (30 – 90 )m

2
d4 =( 3 ¿ d 2

2
d4 =( 3 ¿ ( 278 )=185.3

PSD = d1 +d2 +d3 +d4

PSD = 102.3 +278 +60+185.3

PSD =625.6 m

So that , the passenger car need about 625.6 m to overtake

Calculate the minimum passing sight distance required for a two-lane rural
roadway? The local traffic engineer conducted a speed study of the subject
road and found the following: average speed of the passing vehicle was 47
mi/h with an average acceleration of 11.4 ft/sec2, and the average speed of
slow vehicles was 40 mi/h. Assume P-R-Time =2 sec, passing time 5sec
