NFDN 2004 Assignment 1: Prenatal Teaching Plan, Part 1

Case Study Name: Stephanie
Stage of Growth & The developmental theory appropriate for this case study would be
Development Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development. Erikson’s
developmental stages are expanded to incorporate the entire lifespan,
that identify 8 stages, from birth to old age. (Chute, A. 2016, p. 638)
Adolescence is the developmental stage of focus for this case study.
Some factors from this developmental theory may include role vs.
confusion, as Stephanie is 16 years old, and may not have a complete
sense of who she is, as she has limited experience. Role confusion
plays a role in which Stephanie has the inability to form a consistent
identity. (Chute, A. 2016, p. 640) The growth and development at this
adolescent stage is one that is still in progress and her identity/role is
not yet complete.

Assessment Data Nurse: As the nurse, it is important to provide the absolute

best, safe and holistic care to the client so comfort and
rapport are maintained throughout the entire process.
For this maternity client, providing safe care can
create a nurse-client relationship that can ensure trust
and safety during her care. The nurse may also assist
by aiding in the ability to provide the best care,
such as making sure she understands the
teachings, treatments or information conveyed
to her.

Client: For the maternity client, the concept of person applies

to aid in the ability of providing the best care, such as
making sure she understands the teachings,
knowledge and/or information conveyed to her.
Ensuring the maternity client is provided with the best
possible care during her pregnancy ensures comfort
and builds rapport with the client pertaining to
treating the client with holistic values so that
“relevant aspects of a person should be considered
when nursing care is provided.” (Clune & Gregory,
2015, p.196)

Environment: The concept of environment to this client, includes all

aspects of her external and internal environments
which “is the totality of all things that impact a
person.” (Clune & Gregory, 2015, p.196) For this
client, her external environment of living at home

with her family may benefit her as she requires

support throughout her pregnancy. For this client, her
external and internal environments can greatly impact
and affect her pregnancy during and after her
pregnancy.
Health The concept of health to this adolescent client would
apply in a process to aid the client in coping with her
pregnancy in a healthy matter and for her overall
wellness. Aspects such as dietary food intake,
nutrition and health risk concerns are factors that
shape this client’s wellbeing. Taking an approach to
improve her knowledge and understanding of how to
prepare for birth along with the wellness of herself
and the fetus, can benefit the clients’ perspective of
her pregnancy and improve her wellbeing/health.

Social The final concept of social justice allows nurses to

Justice: provide life resources and support to the vulnerable or
disadvantaged members of society. (Clune &
Gregory, 2015, p.197) For this adolescent client,
ensuring support from her family and making sure she
has all the necessities needed for preparing for birth
can be one of the many ways the nurse can assist. In
this case study, Stephanie lives with her family and is
attending her first prenatal visit with her mother.
Ensuring Stephanie has all the necessary knowledge
for her birth is imperative to obtaining a healthy
pregnancy. For this client, being able to provide
resources and/or support groups will help aid in
knowledge and create a better understanding that will
help ensure support and a justice system.

3 Health Education A.
Needs Nutrition
In this case study, Stephanie is 16 years old, in her adolescent
period.
“pregnant adolescents and their infants are at increased risk of
complications during pregnancy and postpartum.” (Keenan-
Lindsay, L., 2016, p. 282) Nutrition during this pregnancy is a
priority health need as it is essential that both mother and fetus
receive the necessary dietary intake and nutrients as adolescent
girls have an inadequate intake of vitamins, minerals and fibre.
(Keenan-Lindsay, L., 2016, p. 282) If the mother fails her

dietary intake during the adolescent period, it “can result in

delayed sexual maturation and can stop or slow linear growth.”
(Keenan-Lindsay, L., 2016, p. 282)
B. Substance use
“in children and young adults, alcohol and illicit drug use occurs
most commonly between the 12 and 24.” (Sams, C. 2016, p.
829) During Stephanie’s prenatal visit, she did not respond to
questions regarding tobacco or drug use, however, she admitted
to occasional alcohol consumption prior to conception. It is
important Stephanie is given the necessary knowledge of
substance use during her pregnancy and the risks and harm this
can do to her pregnancy.

C. Continuing education
Stephanie is still in high school and is on the honor roll while
actively pursuing extra-curricular school activities. It is
important at this adolescent age that Stephanie has the support
needed to raise her baby after birth and complete her education.
Discussing the benefits of continuing her education can
influence a positive future for Stephanie and create pathways for
the future of her and her baby.

#3 Continuing education

Learning Goal The main goal for Stephanie would be to encourage her to create and
maintain a stable and healthy diet that is adequate to provide the
necessary nutrients and diet in her pregnancy. The teaching plan
should accomplish a sense of knowledge of how to prepare for her
birth and the correct nutrition requirements she should follow.
