OPERATION ON FUNCTIONS

IV. PROCEDURE:
A. Readings:
Reviewing on the previous lesson

Definition: SUM, DIFFERENCE, PRODUCT, QUOTIENT OF FUNCTIONS

Let f and g be any two functions.
f
The sum f +g , difference f −g, product fg and quotient are functions whose domains are the set
g
of all real numbers common to the domain of f and g and defined as follows:
1. Sum: ( f + g )( x )=f ( x )+ g ( x ) 3. Product: ( fg ) ( x )=f ( x) ⋅ g( x)
f f ( x)
2. Difference: ( f −g ) ( x )=f ( x )−g ( x ) 4. Quotient: ( x )= where g ( x ) ≠ 0.
g g(x)

Illustrative Examples:
1. If f ( x )=3 x−2 and g ( x )=x 2+2 x−3 find;
f
a. ( f + g )( x ) b. ( f −g ) ( x ) c. ( fg ) ( x ) d. (x)
g
Solution:
a. Definition of sum of functions
Add f(x) and g(x)
Combine like terms

b. Definition of the difference of functions

Subtract f(x) and g(x)
Perform subtraction
Combine like terms

c. Definition of the product of functions

Multiply f(x) and g(x)
Apply distributive property

2. Let f ( x )=x 2−5 and g ( x )=5 x+ 4, find:
a. ( f + g )( x ) b. ( f + g )( 3 ) c. ( f −g ) ( x ) d. ( f −g ) ( 5 )
a. Definition of sum of functions
Add f(x) and g(x)
Combine like terms

b. The resulting function of letter a.

Substitute 3 to the value of x.
Perform the indicated operation

c. Definition of the difference of functions

Subtract f(x) and g(x)
Perform subtraction
Combine like terms

d. The resulting function of letter c.

Substitute 5 to the value of x.
Perform the indicated operation

Definition: The composition of the function f with g is denoted by f ∘ g and is defined by the
equation ( f ∘ g )( x )=f (g ( x ))

The domain of the composition of function f ∘ g is the set of all x such that
1. x is the domain of g; and
2. g(x) is the domain of f.

Illustrative Examples:

1. Given f ( x )=4 x−5 and g ( x )=x 2+ 4 , find:

a. ( f ∘ g)(x) b. ( g ∘ f )( x)

Solution:
a. Because means , we must replace each occurrence of in the function by

Given equation for f.

Replace x by the g(x)
Replace g(x) by .
Apply Distribution Law.
Combine like terms.

Thus,

b. Because means , we must replace each occurrence of in the function by

Given equation for g.

Replace x by the f(x)
Replace f(x) by .
Square the binomial.
Combine like terms.

Thus,

B. Exercises for Skill Subjects/Analysis Questions using HOTS for content subjects
Exercise 1:
Directions: Determine whether or not each statement is TRUE or FALSE. Explain your
answer.
1. If f ( x )=x−3 and g ( x )=x+ 4 , then ( f −g ) ( x )=−7 .

2. If f ( x )=x +6 and g ( x )=3 x , then ( fg ) ( 3 )=1

3. If f ( x )=4 x−12 and g ( x )=x−3, then ( f + g )( 2 ) =−5
4. The functions
4. If f ( x )= √ x and g ( x )=x−4 , then g ( f ( x ) )=f ( g ( x ) ) for every x.
