1) The document is a reaction paper about the film Dead Poets Society written by a grade 11 student.
2) The student relates to one of the main characters, Todd, who is shy and prefers listening to others. Another main character, Neil, is good at acting but faces pressure from his family.
3) Their English teacher, Mr. Keatings, inspires the students to start a secret poetry club called the Dead Poets Society. The teacher teaches them to think independently, which impacts the student writing the reaction paper.

At first, I would say that I was bored at seeing the plot line as I’ve thought that it’s pretty common. Seeing those boring teachers and the smart yet rebellious boys didn’t really pique my interest; not until I saw the main characters, Todd and Neil. I relate to Todd in a whole level. The guy who can’t express his feelings well. The one who prefers listening to others than letting others listen to him. Neil, Todd’s roommate, the playful and outgoing one who has family issues yet very good at hiding what he wants to say and what he is feeling. Neil, being a good actor in the play, is indeed a very good actor as a person. Neil was really interesting for me because despite being good at many things, he chose to let out his feelings by acting (even though his parents despise this idea) and writing poems. Well, Todd all along has the poet in him. Meeting Mr. Keatings, their literature teacher, was really weird at first, but became very inspirational as time went by. Todd, Neil and their other friends, was so inspired by Mr. Keatings’ words, they decided on taking the Dead Poets Society their teacher had and continuing the teacher’s legacy by reading their poems aloud to one another. I really appreciated this scene as I’ve thought that in today’s time, Poetry and Literature itself is becoming less appreciated. By doing this, they would be able to appreciate the beauty of poetry; although it is very risky to do so. There were some words Mr. Keatings shared that really hit my head for years. “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” To be honest, I didn’t really write poems before because I appreciate the literature and poetry’s art, but I just find the rhyming schemes very cool. I wrote poems because I thought they’re cool. Well, they are, but I realized you don’t just write poems to be cool. But because it is cool. It is so cool that its beauty shall be preserved and all people shall be aware of and can appreciate. Another one I loved is "Strive to find your own voice, because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it all.” Relating it to Neil, he strived to find his voice, but when he began screaming, he couldn’t find it. Because his voice stifled when he tried to scream. He realized that his parents didn’t want him to become himself and he has to follow them for the rest of his life. Inside the doctor everyone wanted him to be, is a dying actor who wants to be free. It really was a sad and an unfortunate event when Neil did suicide after those events. Now relating it to Todd, a shy person he was. But when his feelings were full, he started to blast. It may not be regarded by their principal, but he fought for Mr. Keatings’ loss of job. He realized that because he can’t fight for Neil, at least for once, he would fight for something worth fighting for; even though he knew that he has no chance of winning. Respect, these three really deserve. I’ve learned a lot about this movie. But what I love so much about Mr. Keatings’ teaching is that he triggers his students to learn to think by themselves and to think for themselves; which I think is a very good method of teaching. I learned to speak up by yourself and for yourself. I realized that our words are valid and that they really do matter. Lastly, I realized that words really are powerful and by these words, we can show everyone the reality, can show everyone on how to re-shape these realities and look at other point of views from these realities. These poetries are so powerful, it can not only influence someone, but it has the ability to wholly change someone’s life.
