CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING PROGRAMME

1.0 PURPOSE OF TRAINING

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skills development programme

that was initiated in 1973 by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This was to update practical

knowledge of students in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology. It was

aimed at reducing the differences that separates the theoretical knowledge acquired in classes

and technical knowledge in the industries by providing students with the opportunities to apply

their educational knowledge in real work situations.

Over the years, SIWES has contributed greatly to building the common pool of technical and

allied skills available to the Nigerian economy which are needed for the nation’s industrial

development.

Furthermore, the place and relevance of SIWES is underscored by the fact that the scheme

contributes to improving the quality of technical skills generally available in the pool from which

employers of labour source for technical manpower.

It also gives students the opportunity to blend theoretical knowledge acquired in the Classroom

with practical hands-on application of knowledge required to perform work in the industry and

corporate world. Also, it prepares students for employment and makes the transition from school

to the world of business easier after graduation.

our work is not limited to the office environment. It is required of us to meet deadlines and only

removed the background noise.

9
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

Fig 3 Audacity noise removal

And I edit it further by using some effects like: Equalization, which is a way of manipulating the
sounds by frequency, it allows you to increase volume of some frequencies and reduce others.
Compressor effect which is to reduce the dynamic range of the audio. Normalize effect and
change pitch effect.
I also cut and paste on Audacity, removing a part of an audio and place it somewhere else in the
audio or cutting a part out of an audio. I use the normal cut and paste shortcut for this (ctrl c and
ctrl v).
I also import audio to edit on Audacity, clicking on file in the menu bar and clicking on import
audio, I will just select the audio file and it will be imported into the audacity software. I remove
the vocal from an audio to leave the instrumental, by going to effect and clicking on vocal
reduction. I also add effects to an imported audio, or cut a part from the audio.

2.14 AUDIO AND VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION

Transcription is the process of converting audio into a written document. Transcription is an
alternative to make audio in text format. With regards to video, transcription is an extraordinary
supplement to subtitling. The process of transcription consist of three steps, Listening to an
audio, Deciphering what is been said, and typing it into a document. You begin by playing the
audio from a transcription software and listen to it carefully through a headset so it will be
audible to you hearing, then you will decipher what is said in the audio. Finally, type it into the
text document meticulously.

The Transcription industry is really growing very fast and there are so many jobs out there for
trained transcriptionists, especially freelance transcriptionist.
I transcribed a lot of audio and videos during my siwes program. I did lot for clients. I transcribe

using VLC as Transcription software. Otter.ai is a web-app I was introduced to that makes
transcription a lot easier. It is an artificial intelligence web-app that transcribes audio files, if you
want to transcribe a video using otter.ai, you have to convert the video into audio using VLC,
then upload it on otter.ai and it converts it to text format within a period of time. But as a
transcriptionist you still need to proof read and edit the document.

CHAPTER 3
THE CHALLENGES FACED
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience,
but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
There is no task that does not pose a challenge but the atmosphere created by our supervisor
makes such challenges a great learning and fun experience for us.

The major challenge I faced was trying to meet up with clients job and cumbersome assignments
given to me and I have to make sure the both are ready before the due date assigned to me. It was
a bit stressful.

The other challenge was the volume of materials I was expected to study and come up with a
solution during the brain-storming sessions.

In all these, it has been a great experience worth it.

20
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

CHAPTER 4
OBSERVATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS
4.0 OBSERVATIONS

 As a student my first observation was the cognition of the difference between the school
environment and the corporate world.
 The expectation about Computer Science student is very high. Most tasks were thrown at
me in particular as the students with most excellent academic record. I thank God; I was
able to live up to expectation.
 The company makes little to no room of break period especially during peak periods of
so many jobs with short deadlines.
 A leader has to create an enabling environment to get the best out of his team in
seemingly difficult situations.

4.1. CONTRIBUTIONS

21
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

My contributions to the team at the web development unit were second to none because of the
passion I had for the web and technology.

My ability to adapt to new technologies and learn new things on short notices was commended
by my supervisor.

I was able to represent the company at various times to meet with clients and discuss their
requirements.
I also brought my experience to bear on the team most times making me to train other interns in
our spare time.

4.2 RELEVANCE OF THE EXPERIENCE GAINED TO CLASSROOM KNOWLEDGE

The relevance of the experiences gained at Dordave Enterprise can be linked to the following
courses:-

COM 121 INTRODUCTIONS TO INTERNET

COM 123 COMP. APPLICATION PACKAGES

COM 124 DATA STRUCTURES & ALGORITHMS

COM 125 INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

22
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.0 CONCLUSION

My four months Industrial attachment was a huge success, a great time of acquisition of

knowledge and demonstration of skills. I would like to conclude that the purpose for the

industrial attachment before my second year in higher institution, especially for a period for as

long as given, was very much achieved. My experience in the area of Article writing, Audio and

video editing, Transcription, web design, online graphic design, ecommerce, social media

marketing skills has really improved.

23
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

Also in addition to this is the opportunity I see in Nigeria through efficient use of digital

marketing an aspect of web development that has not been fully tapped.

I have been able to discover that there are numerous web projects out there waiting to be done as

most companies are yet to have their websites, domain names auctioning and hosting services yet

to be fully harnessed.

In the area of entrepreneurship, the experience gathered has helped me understand how to

interact with new and existing clients, come up with proposals to write to new clients and

negotiate a web project.

The relevance of the experience gained here at Dordave Enterprise and the volume of projects

coupled with the exposure to new trends in web development will no doubt have a major role to

play in my final year project and future course of research.

The experience has also opened my eyes to the reality of the misconception among the teeming

jobless youths in our society. I made bold to say that there are jobs enough to eradicate

joblessness in our society when the potentials of ICT Skills are fully harnessed.

1.1 RECOMMENDATION

I want to use this means to make the following recommendations concerning the Industrial

training of students:

 I would like to recommend that the Computer Science Curriculum in Yaba College of

Technology be updated to accommodate current trends in web development and other

digital skilss. Allowances should be paid to students of Yaba College of Technology

during their IT/SIWES Programme.

24
Adebule Victoria Moyosola F/ND/18/3210164

 A National policy that would be all embracing making it mandatory for companies to

take up certain number of students for IT/SIWES.
