Lesson 1 Place Value & Value of Decimal Numbers

What is it
Read this figure.
15.235 – Fifteen and two hundred thirty – five thousandths.
What is the place value of the underlined digit? Hundredths
How about its value? 0.03
To easily identify the place value and value of a digit in a given decimal number a
place value chart can be used.

Place Value Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths
Value 4 0.6 0.09 0.007

Place Value & Value are two different things. Place value would mean its position or
location in a given number while value indicates its quantity or face value.
 The place value of a digit to the left is 10 times the place value of the digit to its right.
1
 The place value of a digit to the right is of the place value of the digit to its left.

To further understand the concept, let us study more examples.

THOUSANDTHS
in figures 3 7 • 5 0 2 9
in words Thirty – seven and five thousand, twenty – nine ten thousandths
 Read the decimals from left to right.
 The digits to the left of the decimal point are read as a whole number, and the decimal point
is read as “and”.
 The digits to the right of the point are also read as a whole number, after which we say the
name of the place value of the last digit.
Another way of reading decimals are just that of writing fractions whose
denominators are powers of ten and the proper way to read them is the same as reading the
corresponding fractions which they represent. The number of zeros in the denominator
indicates the number of decimal places.
