IF CONDITIONAL

Structure :
A conditional sentence is composed of 2 parts :
If Clause + Main Clause

Example :
If it rains tomorrow, we will not come.

If Clause Main Clause

1. There are 3 types of conditional sentences. They are classified according to their
specific implications.
2. Each type of conditional sentences uses different tenses to show the difference in their
implications.

Types If Conditional
A. Type 1
Use : Talk about a present or future probable case.
Tense : If-clause ~ Present Tense
Main Clause ~ Future Tense

Example :
If it rains, I will stay at home.
If you don’t hurry, you will miss the train.

Present Tense Future Tense


B. Type 2 (Present Subjunctive)
Use : Talk about a present or future improbable case. (A case that is unlikely to happen)
Tense : If-clause ~ Past Tense
Main Clause ~ would + an infinitive

Example :

If it trained, you would catch a cold.


If you went to bed earlier, you wouldn’t be so tired.

Past Tense Would + Infinitive

C. Type 3 (Past Subjunctive)


Use : Talk about a past, impossible case
Tense : If-clause ~ Past Perfect Tense
Main Clause ~ Would + Present Perfect Form

Example :

If it had rained, you would have caught a cold.


If you had worked harder, you would have had enough money to buy a new motorcycle.

Past Perfect Tense Would + Present Perfect Form

Variations

1. Type 1
If you see Alim, ask him to come and see me.
Should you see Alim, ask him to come and see me.

SHOULD may replace


IF in type 1

COULD or MIGHT
2. Type 2 may replace WOULD

If I were an aeroplane, I could fly in the sky.


Were I an aeroplane, I could fly in the sky.

WERE may replace IF in an inversion

3. Type 3

If I had come home earlier, I would not have missed the programme.
Had I come home earlier, I would not have missed the programme

HAD may replace IF in an inversion

1. If the place were not cancelled, he would not arrive late to the ceremony.

2. If you brought an umbrella or a raincoat, you would not be wet.

3. If they played football sportively, they would not get punishment from the
committee.

4. If she came on time, she would not make other people worry about her.
5. If he were not absent from class, he would not miss the lesson.

6. If he did not get flat tire, he would not come late.

7. If he stopped smoking, he would not suffer from lungs cancer.

8. If they built their house strongly, their house might not be damaged by the hurricane.

9. If people did not plant mangroves in the beach, it would not get abrasion.

10. If people planted trees on the slope of the mountain, they would not suffer from land
side.

Task 2. Based on the following fact, create the conditional sentence with if.
1. Dude does not come to school because he is sick.

2. The basketball team does not win the competition because the team does not practice
regularly.

3. The victims of the natural disaster get hungry because the food comes late.

4. The patient suffers from lungs cancer because he smokes too much cigarette.

5. People throw rubbish into river because they do not know how to manage rubbish
well.
