Evolution of Media

The evolution of media shows the development or changes of media over time. There are four
periods/eras/ages:
1. Pre-industrial/Prehistoric Period
2. Industrial Period
3. Electronic Period
4. New/Digital/Information Period

Prehistoric/Pre-Industrial Period
(Before 1700’s)
In this period, fire was discovered. In addition, paper was developed from plants and weapons from
stones, copper and iron are forged.

Some media during that time:


a. Cave Paintings/Parietal Art
b. Clay Tablets/Cuneiform (Mesopotamia)
c. Papyrus (Egypt)
d. Woodblock Painting
e. Mayan Codex
f. Dibao (Chinese Newspaper)- One of the earliest and oldest newspaper in the world.
g. Invention of Printing Press (Johannes Gutenberg)

In this period, communication was very limited and localized. So the society had strong ties within their
community.

Industrial Period
(1700s-1930s)
In this period, people used steam-developed machines tools to mass produce and manufacture
various products. This was the rise of industries.

Some media during that time:


a. Newspaper
• Oxford Gazette is First newspaper written in English was in 1665.
• The first Philippine newpaper was called Successos Felices Published by Tomas Pinpin in 1637.
b. Typewriter
• the first typewriter proven to have worked was built by the Italian Pellegrino Turri in 1808.
c. Printing press was industrialized by Friedrich Koenig in 1810.
d. Telegraph by Samuel Morse
e. Telephone by Alexander Graham Bell
f. Motion Pictures/Movies
 Brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere came up with a device which projected film in 1895.
 “The Horse in Motion”- the first film ever made

In this period, the ability to communicate across long distances improved dramatically.
Electronic Period
(1930s-1980s)
In this period, the invention of transistor which made long distance communication possible and more
convenient.

Some media during that time:


a. Television
• Electronic television was first successfully demonstrated in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1927.
b. Transistor Radio
c. Early Computers
 EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator)- the first stored-program computer in
regular use in 1949
 UNIVAC 1(Universal Automatic Computer 1)- first commercial computer produced in USA
1951
 IBM 704 Computer (1954) - first mass-produced computer with core memory and floating-
point arithmetic
 Hewlett-Packard 9100A (hp 9100A) – This was referred as desktop calculator. 1968

In this period, people could communicate at any time, at any place in the world. Long-distance
communication was made more possible.

Information/Digital Period
(1980s- Present)
In this period, internet is the most significant invention and microelectronics are used.

Some media in the Information Age


1. Web Browser
 NCSA's Mosaic™ wasn't the first Web browser, but it was the first to make a major splash in 1993.
 Internet Explorer was created by Microsoft Corporation and was launched in 1995.
2. Blog
 Blogger- Launched by Pyra Lab in 1999 and was bought by Google in 2003
 Wordpress was released in May of 2003
3. Microblogs
 Twitter was originally named as Twttr in 2006.
 Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking site was launched in 2007.
4. Social Media
 Friendster was launched in 2002.
 Multiply was launched in 2003.
 Facebook was launched in 2004
5. YouTube- a video-sharing website launched in 2005.

In this period, life and communication have been so easy. Communication has become instant and
varied.
Herbert Marshall McLuhan

He was a Canadian philosopher and media theorist. He coined the term “Global Village”.

Global Village is where people would get the same access of information simultaneously. Everyone
online is involved – reacting and interacting.

He was the proponent of the media theory on technological determinism. This theory means that
society is driven by changes in media and communication technology.

His mantra is “the medium is the message” which is related to technological determinism.
