AIM OF THIS COURSE
• This course will explain what social problems are; differentiate between
social problems and personal problems; identify the different types of
social problems in Nigeria; examine the causes of social problems and
suggest possible solutions.

• The course also presents the sociological perspective in the explanation


of social problems. Furthermore, this course will expose students to the
concept of culture, its types, characteristics, functions, elements and
other related terms with particular attention on Nigeria.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL PROBLEM?
• Social problem, like every social concept, has been defined in various ways
and arising from different sociological constructs on problems in the
society.
However, the following definitions will aid the understanding of
what social problem is in our society.
• Social problem can be considered as that problem that affects many
people and the people strive to solve the problem in the society.
• Social problem is usually referred to social condition that disrupts social
order in the society.
• A social problem is that condition that has negative consequences on large
number of people and needs to be addressed by government.
