Memories of India
When her father enlists to fight for the British in WWI, young
Sara Crewe goes to New York to attend the same boarding
school her late mother attended. She soon clashes with the
severe headmistress, Miss Minchin, who attempts to stifle
Sara's creativity and sense of self- worth. Sara's belief that
"every girl's a princess" is tested to the limit, however, when
word comes that her father was killed in action and his estate
has been seized by the British government

This film score composition was written to reflect the western girl and the Indian
man she sees. There is a flute, clarinet and strings (western instruments) mixed
with Indian tabla and sitar. The melodies are based both on western scales and
the Indian Rag Desh scale studied in our set work. The piece follows the common
structure of the rag too, with Alap, Jhor and Jhala sections.

Set Brief 1) Theme and Variations

La Rosso Variazioni

for

Solo Piano

This piece for solo piano is composed in a theme and variations structure. The
intention is for it to be performed for an audition as it enables the performed to
display a variety of style that grows ever more complex.
After the original theme is first stated the first variation is in a minor key and the
range of the piano is exploited. Variation 2 flows through a 3/4 time signature,
with extensive use of the sustain pedal. Variation 3 ends with a quick allegro
variation, with flourishing semi-quaver runs.
