The Telephone by Edward Field
My happiness depends on an electric appliance
And I do not mind giving it so much credit
With life in this city being what it is
Each person separated from friends
By a tangle of subways and buses
Yes my telephone is my joy
It tells me that I am in the world and wanted
It rings and I am alerted to love or gossip
I go comb my hair which begins to sparkle
Without it I was like a bear in a cave
Drowsing through a shadowy winter
It rings and spring has come
I stretch and amble out into the sunshine
Hungry again as I pick up the receiver
For the human voice and the good news of friends

MELC 2: Analyze literature as a means of understanding unchanging values
in the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify and understand the values in the VUCA world
2. Relate literature or selection to the unchanging values in the VUCA world
Learning Inputs:
The acronym VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) was first introduced
by the US military during 1987 to define the post-Cold War global security environment. Since
then, it has been used to increase strategic thinking and risk management in different
industries including education and commerce.

VOLATILE Volatility refers to the speed of change in an industry, market or the

world in general. The more volatile the world is, the more and faster
things change. (Kraaijenbrink, 2018)
The environment demands one to act quickly to changes out of
his/her control
UNCERTAIN Uncertainty refers to the extent to which we can confidently predict
the future. The more uncertain the world is, the harder it is to
predict. (Kraaijenbrink, 2018)
The environment requires one to take action without certainty
COMPLEX Complexity refers to the number of factors that we need to take into
account, their variety and the relationships between them. The more
complex the world is, the harder it is to analyze. (Kraaijenbrink,
2018)
The environment is dynamic with many interdependencies.
AMBIGUOUS Ambiguity refers to a lack of clarity about how to interpret
something. A situation is ambiguous, for example, when information
is incomplete, contradicting or too inaccurate to draw clear
conclusions. The more ambiguous the world is, the harder it is to
interpret. (Kraaijenbrink, 2018)
The environment is unfamiliar, outside one’s expertise.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Other
symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include aches and pains,
nasal congestion, headache, conjunctivitis, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell or
a rash on skin or discoloration of fingers or toes. These symptoms are usually mild and
begin gradually. Some people become infected but only have very mild symptoms.

Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing hospital treatment.
Around 1 out of every 5 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops
difficulty breathing. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high
blood pressure, heart and lung problems, diabetes, or cancer, are at higher risk of
developing serious illness. However, anyone can catch COVID-19 and become seriously
ill. People of all ages who experience fever and/or cough associated with difficulty
breathing/shortness of breath, chest pain/pressure, or loss of speech or movement should

4
seek medical attention immediately. If possible, it is recommended to call the health care
provider or facility first, so the patient can be directed to the right clinic.

How does COVID-19 spread?

People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease spreads
primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are
expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets are
relatively heavy, do not travel far and quickly sink to the ground. People can catch
COVID-19 if they breathe in these droplets from a person infected with the virus. This is
why it is important to stay at least 1 meter) away from others. These droplets can land on
objects and surfaces around the person such as tables, doorknobs and handrails. People
can become infected by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes,
nose or mouth. This is why it is important to wash your hands regularly with soap and
water or clean with alcohol-based hand rub.

WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways that COVID-19 is spread and will
continue to share updated findings.

Answer the questions below in relation to the VUCA world:

The world is VOLATILE. How should we respond to a new pandemic like Covid-19?

The world is UNCERTAIN. One of your family members is showing symptoms, yet he says he
is fine. Do you take his word for it or not? Why?

The world is COMPLEX. Create an informative poster that is related to the article you read.
Take note that there are people who need to go to work everyday and staying home is not a
luxury for them. You are free to look for more resources for your poster. (Use a separate sheet
of paper for this)

The world is AMBIGUOUS. The last statement says that there is still ongoing research about
Covid-19. From the point of view of a student, construct an inspiring message about hope in
relation to Covid-19.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And both that morning equally lay
And sorry I could not travel both In leaves no step had trodden black.
And be one traveler, long I stood Oh, I kept the first for another day!
And looked down one as far as I could Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
To where it bent in the undergrowth; I doubted if I should ever come back.

Then took the other, as just as fair, I shall be telling this with a sigh
And having perhaps the better claim, Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
Though as for that the passing there I took the one less traveled by,
Had worn them really about the same, And that has made all the difference.

Vocabulary:
diverged: moved in a different direction claim: demand or right
undergrowth: small trees and plants growing beneath trodden: walked on
larger trees hence: from this time
fair: promising; favorable

3. “I took the one less traveled by, 4. In our world full of uncertainty, would you
And that has made all the difference.” choose to take a road less traveled? Why or
why not?
Which VUCA characteristic is this closest to? Justify
your answer.
