In the near future placed in the year 2050, technology becomes so advanced and
mainstream that everybody has access to tech such as virtual reality. Most people in that world
choose to spend their whole lives in an alternate universe while connecting with other people.
This is essentially the situation pictured in Ready player one because nearly everyone has access
to it. While this might seem like a perfect solution, it does have some drawbacks that tend to
outweigh the benefits. In the movie technology is both an advantage and a disadvantage because
it allows users all over the world to connect, it allows people to spend their whole lives in a
Connecting through technology can be both beneficial and detrimental because of the
vast amount of people that you can meet through it. The main character Wade Watts is a perfect
example of this, he becomes friends with people who live on the other side of the globe. For
example, during the dance, Artemis and Parzival really got to have a closer relationship. This is
one of the most important scenes in the whole movie because it shows that emotional
connections really can be made, and this might be possible in the future. This is further
emphasized with the bright colors in the background which according to some religions mean
empathy and compassion. When Artemis touches Parzival, his suit turns blue whereas when he
gets shot, his suit turns red. This scene is important because it shows how deeper connections can
be made through virtual reality. This could also be a disadvantage as well because he can
actually feel getting shot in real life. While technology seems like an advantage, it does have
some clear disadvantages regarding people with malicious intentions. The antagonist Nolan
Sorrento is the leader of the IOI and wants to profit off the oasis. During that same dance scene,
Parzival mentioned his name to Artemis and one of Nolan’s subordinates hears it. This scene is
especially vital because it shows how advanced technology has gotten. In that world, all you
need is a name and you can find everything you want to know about that person such as their
address. Additionally it shows that viruses, and hacking might be so advanced someday that
people such as Nolan only use it for harm. We can already see this technology in our real life,
and it is a major concern right now because people don’t want to lose all their information.
In the movie, people spend most of their time in the virtual world. This can be both
interpreted in a good and bad way. For example, in the beginning of the movie, it gives a brief
explanation of the oasis, and says that you can do anything and your imagination is your limit.
The significance of this is that it allows users to be imaginative. Additionally, it allows users to
visit interesting places that they’ve never been before such as, “rock climbing with Batman.”
There are some disadvantages to this though; For instance, a paradox, this situation is kind of self
contradictory. The more time people put into the video game, the more the real world ends up
being trashed. This can be clearly seen in the scene where Wade is walking to his van. Everyone
lives in multiple story shacks and cars are littered all over the place. The world has simply given
up on it’s problems, and big corporations such as IOI just take advantage of this situation. Most
people would agree that this way of thinking is very destructive solely because they spend all
their time in a “fake world”, and that the real world gets destroyed as a result. Steven Spielburg
employs these elements to show the audience what would happen to society if we didn’t care
about the world we live in. At the end of the movie, he demonstrates that sometimes society
should take a break from technology and focus on ourselves by letting Wade close the oasis on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. Technology can be beneficial to humankind, but we should also not
Finally, technology can allow people from all over the world to choose their identity. One
example of this can be seen in Ready Player One when it shows the variety of avatars that you
can choose from. This is good because the technology allows you to cover up your insecurities,
like that 11 year old who turned into a full blown ninja. This can also be shown through the
various allusions or references to pop culture such as batman and Tracer (Overwatch) aviators.
This can bring people together in a sense because it allows people to have common interests in
the game. The Oasis in Ready Player One also lets users make their avatars all according to their
personality or things they like. This is important because it allows people to express themselves
while changing their look from the real world. Nevertheless, choosing your own avatar does have
some potential drawbacks though. In a sense, it corrodes your sense of identity from the real
world. When you spend all your time in an alternate world, of course your experiences will
change over time. Since people experience so much from the oasis, the process is ten times
easier. I would say Steven Spielburg is trying to tell us that technology corrodes the soul because
sometimes we get too attached to it, so we lose sight of other important things. Also because you
can turn into anything, some people could be evil which would make them more likely to be evil
Technology can be both good and bad, it all depends on the people using the tech. Some
reasons why it is both advantageous and disadvantageous is because it allows easier connections,
doesn't have to care about the real world, and people can choose their identity. While displaying
a phenomenal story, Steven Spielberg employs a number of devices to help get his point across.
These range from the type of music playing to the different meanings of the different colors
being displayed. The devices often have meanings that help develop a theme that the audience
can understand. Technology in the real world is getting so advanced that the human race should
be concerned for the potential drawbacks of widespread use as shown in the movie.
