CENTRAL DOGMA: FROM GENES TO PROTEINS

by: Maria Aiko Angela A. Diaz and Kristopher T. Inting

GROUP 4 (BSMT 2A) – CAHIGAS, JAPAY, LACASTE, QUINZON, REYES, SERPA JUAN, TAMAYO

The Human Molecular Genetics Laboratory of Dr. Watson has three security doors. To get in the lab, you have to
enter the correct password to each door, one after the other. Dr. Yourname, a new researcher in the lab, was
given clues on how to determine the password for each door as a test of his intelligence. The clues were given as
DNA sequences of sense strands. These sequences need to be translated to their corresponding amino acid (in
the one letter code system) to spell out the clues to the password. (Remember that the words formed using the
one letter amino acid code are NOT the passwords, but merely clues on how to get the password.) Help Dr.
Yourname solve the passwords of the doors so that he can enter the lab. Hint 1: Do not proceed directly to
translation. Convert to mRNA and find the start codon. The clue is bounded by the start and stop codon. Hint 2:
The picture and the number of boxes on the door are further clues to the password that opens it. Hint 3: The
illustrations on the doors can also help you figure out the password.
