Criteria
You are a Learning and Development professional with a Linkedin account
seeking to develop your portfolio as a consultant. Through the Linkedin
account you have been contacted by an organisation that provides L&D
consultancy services globally and have been invited for an interview. You have
been informed that during the interview your knowledge and experience of
providing consultancy services will be explored. You have also been provided
with a scenario that will be used to assess how you would work with a client
before and during the provision of consultancy services. The scenario you
have been provided with is:

‘An Access to Higher Education Validating Agency (AVA) has asked for a
short training programme to prepare new external moderators for their role in
moderation. There are 20 moderators in total, located in different parts of the
country. The financial assumptions are:

- a consultancy day rate of £250

- standard travel costs by rail if incurred by consultant and moderators and/or


45p per
mile by car

- an external moderator attendance fee of £50 per moderator.

The sponsor is willing to entertain any mode of training within a resource


envelope not in excess of £2,000.

Activity 1
In preparation for the likely interview questions you are asked to prepare some
notes that include:
 An explanation of the meaning of consultancy with reference to one model 1.1
 To compare and contrast three different examples from the business world 1.2
 An explanation of each stage of the consultancy process. 1.3
 How you would establish with a client what was required in terms of an 2.1

L&D solution for the training programme scenario provided.


Activity 2 2.2, 2.3
 A brief paper that summarises two different costed options for addressing
the scenario provided with a recommended costed solution.
 An explanation of how you would establish the processes for reporting on
the progress and outcomes of the learning and development solution. 3.1,3.2
 The basis of any recommendations for future actions extrapolated from the
training programme scenario, this ensures sustainable change. 3.3
 Examples of at least three causes of common problems with client-
consultant relationships and how you would avoid or address them should 3.4
they occur.
Evidence to be produced
Activity 1
A set of short notes of approximately 1950 words that address the theoretical aspects of
consultancy.
Activity 2
A justified and costed learning and development solution of approximately 1950 words.

You should relate academic concepts, theories and professional practice to the way
organisations operate, in a critical and informed way, and with reference to key texts, articles
and other publications and by using organisational examples for illustration.
All reference sources should be acknowledged correctly, and a bibliography provided where
appropriate (these should be excluded from the word count).

Guidance for Assessors for 5CNS (LO 1, 2 & 3)

This guidance is for assessors only and should not be handed out to candidates.

Candidates should produce:


Activity 1
A set of short notes that address the theoretical aspects of consultancy.
(approx. 1500 words)

Activity 2
A justified and costed learning and development solution (approx. 1500 words)

Candidates should relate academic concepts, theories and professional practice to the way
organisations operate, in a critical and informed way, and with reference to key texts, articles and
other publications and by using organisational examples for illustration.

Assessment criteria guidance:

Candidates should:
AC 1.1, 1,2,
1.3, 3.1, 3.2,  Provide an encompassing definition of consultancy with reference to at least
3.3, 3.4 one model of consultancy e.g. Lundberg, Ulrich
 Give at least three and examples from the business world e.g. L&D, marketing,
IT etc.
 Explain each stage of the consultancy process from identification of business
need through to closure and/or renewal of the arrangement.
 Explain how they would establish with the client the processes for reporting on
the progress and outcomes of an L&D solution e.g. e-briefings, 1:2:1 catch ups
 Give examples of follow up activities to sustain change e.g. follow up diagnostic
impact assessments, further training etc.
 Provide at least three examples of how client-consultant relationships can
become dysfunctional and how problems can be avoided e.g. establishing and
adhering to modes and frequency of communication, clarifying and re-clarifying
client requirements, agreeing scope and boundaries.

Candidates should:

AC 2.1, 2.2,  Explain how they would establish the requirements of the customer in the case
2.3 study outline e.g. requesting more information on the need, expected outcomes
and outputs, nature of the participants.
 Give two costed examples of how the need could be met e.g. a face-to-face
workshop delivered in a central location or a set of guided study and self-test
materials which participants would be required to complete.
 Provide a recommended and costed solution based on their assessment of
need and budget parameters.
