ACTIVITY 1

H I T T H E M A R K :

Plotting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)

The Philippine Area of responsibility (PAR) is a zone of the Earth’s surface surrounding the Philippines,
Palau, Taiwan, and northern slope of Borneo. When a weather disturbance enters the PAR, the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, PAGASA, monitors its activities. PAGASA
will issue warnings and important information necessary for the protection of life and property. Do you know
where the PAR is? To find this out, let’s do the following activity.

I. OBJECTIVE/S:

After carrying out this activity, you should be able to:

1. tell if a typhoon has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, and
2. explain what is meant when a typhoon has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

II. MATERIALS:
 map of the Philippines and vicinity
 pencil
 Colorful Markers

III. PROCEDURES:

1. Plot the coordinates found in Table 1.1 on the map (see Figure 1).

Table 1.1: Coordinates of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Points Latitude Longitude

a 5°N 115°E
b 15°N 115°E
c 21°N 120°E
d 25°N 120°E
e 25°N 135°E
f 5°N 135°E

2. Connect the plotted points (Use Red Marker). The region within is the Philippine Area of
Responsibility or PAR.
3. Plot the coordinates found in Table 1.2. Use the assigned colors and label the points accordingly.

Table 1.2: Coordinates of the typhoon spotted near the Philippines.

Typhoon Latitude Longitude

Typhoon A (Blue) 23°N 135°E

Typhoon B (Green) 6°N 132°E

Typhoon C (Orange) 26°N 138°E

Typhoon D (Violet) 11°N 138°E

IV. ANALYSIS:

1.Should the PAGASA monitor all spotted typhoon near the Philippines? Why yes? Why not?

2.How many of the spotted typhoon entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility? (Name all)
