Research on the article "DOLE urged to address job-skills mismatch" by Vanne Ellaine Terrazola and
Answer these questions:

1. What does job-skills mismatch imply about the relevance of schools to present society?

The Department of Labor and Employment commits to what seems to be a never-ending cause of
providing enough decent jobs for Filipinos. It may be pleasing to hear that more than a hundred
thousand jobs are available yet it cannot be denied that numbers are still growing in terms of both
unemployment and underemployment. Why? Job-skills mismatch.

In today’s world, schools are experimenting with new ways to make their careers advice more
accessible and meaningful. It is recommended for graduating high school students to take career
assessment exams given by school and for schools to come up with a short substantive program for
them to discuss employment trends and corporate practices.

2. Are schools effective agents of socialization in preparing graduates for their job roles?

In terms of socialization, the school has in recent years, come to take over some of the functions of
the family and community, the school has become a primary agency of socialization. The school is
the first large scale organization of which the child becomes a member. The school is a miniature
reflecting what goes on in the wider society, one way of appreciating the school’s potential for
socialization lies in the simple reckoning of the amount of time s the youngsters spend in school and
in activities related to the school. The youngsters spend the major part of their active hours of the
day in school, from morning to evening in case of a day school and boarding schools they stay for
duration of about a year. Obviously, during this time student acquires a lot from the teachers and
fellow students. Due to this fact the school becomes an important agent of socialization.

3. What is the meaning of NCEE?

NATIONAL COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION is a standardized test, prerequisite for entrance into

almost all higher education institutions at the undergraduate level.

4. Was the NCEE in support of equal access to quality education? Why was it abolished when it did
exactly what Filipinos then wanted?

No, not all Filipinos wanted it because it is anti-poor, one of the reasons why it was abolished is
different prestigious schools still require students to take their admission tests. So the students are
in double jeopardy. You must pass both exams and it will be a burden to the students, and most of
those who did not pass the NCEE were graduates of deprived schools.

5. Should we bring back the NCEE? Why or Why not?

Based on my research, should we bring back NCEE? Yes, why? If it’s for standardization purposes
then it will help boost our quality education and it is a great idea to have a national standardized test
that will serve as the main factor for entry into college.
And why not, how about the students have fail/low grades, what will happen to them? Not all
students have the same iq.
