ORDER OF BLESSING

Introductory Rites

Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Priest: May God, the source of all wisdom, Christ the Lord, his Word
incarnate, and the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, be with you all.
All: And with your spirit.

Priest: The all-knowing God, who is Lord, moves us in many ways to

deepen that knowledge of him which he revealed completely
when for our sake the Word was made flesh. All disciplines,
sciences, and teaching about the world and about human life that
we pursue must have as their final purpose to bring us to a
knowledge of the truth and to the worship of the true God. Today
we ask God’s blessing on this center of seeking, learning, and
teaching what is true. We ask that those entrusted with the
education of children or young people in this institution may
teach their students how to join the discoveries of human
wisdom with the truth of the Gospel, so that they will be able to
keep the true faith and to live up to it in their lives. We also ask
the Lord that the students will find in their teachers the image of
Christ, so that enriched with both human and divine learning;
they will in turn be able and ready to enlighten and assist others.
Reading of the Word of God

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Jesus went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to
him. He began to teach them, saying: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt
loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to
be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on
a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a
bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so,
your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify
your heavenly Father.”

Responsorial Psalm

Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.

1. The law of the Lord is perfect,

refreshing the soul;
the decree of the Lord is trustworthy,
giving wisdom to the simple.

2. The precepts of the Lord are right,

rejoicing the heart;
the command of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eye.

3. The fear of the Lord is pure,

enduring forever;
The ordinances of the Lord are true,
all of them just.

4. Though your servant is careful of them,

very diligent in keeping them,
yet who can detect failings?

Intercessions

Priest: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Let us then
call on God’s blessing, so that we may come to know and to
follow in our lives all that is true, all that is right. Let us pray:

LORD, GIVE US THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM

1. Lord our God, you have showered us with such great love that we are
called and truly are your children; help us to use what we learn in order
to perceive our Christian calling more clearly and to live it more fully.
Let us pray to the Lord.

2. In Christ your Son your gave us the model of your new creation, as he
advanced in wisdom, age, and grace; grant that as we advance in our
courses of study we may also grow through your grace. Let us pray to
the Lord.

3. In your providence you made mutual cooperation the means of human

development; grant that all those charged with our instruction may also
teach us to work for the common good. Let us pray to the Lord.

4. You are the author and the guardian of human dignity; grant that the
benefits of a sound education may quickly be extended to all the
peoples of the world. Let us pray to the Lord.

Prayer of Blessing
Priest: Lord God almighty, in your kindness hear our prayers. We
dedicate this building to the education of youth, to the progress
of the sciences, and to learning. Make it become a center where
students and teachers, imbued with the words of truth, will
search for the wisdom that guides the Christian life and strive
wholeheartedly to stand by Christ as their teacher, who lives and
reigns for ever and ever.
All: Amen.

Concluding Rite

Priest: May the all-knowing God, who is Lord, show us his ways; may
Christ, eternal Wisdom, teach us the words of truth; may the Holy
Spirit, the blessed light, always enlighten our minds, so that we
may learn what is right and good and in our actions carry out
what we have learned.
All: Amen.

Priest: And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, +
and the Holy Spirit, come upon you and remain with you for
ever.
All: Amen.
