evidence
Specific Objectives:
 Identify the components of the scientific method
 List the steps of the scientific method and be able to perform the
associated tasks for each step

Clue # 1: Anyone who has ever read a mystery novel or who have seen Detective
Conan on TV, has seen these process in action.

Clue # 2: Anyone who has ever tried to figure out what happens to the refrigerator
when you closed the door or unlit the candle has seen this system.

Clue # 3: It is not mystical or magic. Instead, it is a logical, organized mechanism for

solving a problem and devising a strategy for solving it
B. ENGAGEMENT: Let the students try deciphering the box message below to find out why scientific

Answer:
Scientific methods are valuable when internalized as a process.
1. To solve problems in life
2. To explain natural phenomena
3. To develop/invent useful products

Video Presentation:

The Scientific Method: Steps, Examples, Tips, and Exercise

Time Allotment: 4:05

Procedure:
a. Let the students know that they are to learn these terms and definitions:

Voc-of-knowledge:
Hypothesis = an educated guess about what might be the answer.
Conclusion = a satement about the results of the experiment.
Variables = factors that change during an experiment
Controls = factors that are kept constant throughout the experiment
Trials = are the number of times the experiment is repeated
Independent Variables = are also experimental variables; are those that
the experimenter herself is changing.
Dependent Variables = are those factors that change because of the
changes in the independent variable.

b. Provide a copy of the informational text to each student and have the
students read with a partner. Once the students have finished reading have
them discuss within their groups the questions on the side of the handout.
After you have given the groups a few minutes to discuss call on a few of
the groups to share with the class.

Teacher’s Note:

Tell the class that in the course of the unit, they will learn if the things they
have listed under each term are correct. From time to time, you will ask them to
revise the things they have listed about each term as they learn more about them.
D. EXPLANATION:
Discussing new concepts and Activity
practicing new skills #1 Scientific Method Practice Scenarios
Discussing new concepts and
practicing new skills #2 As we begin to work using the Scientific Method to solve problems, we must
remember the vocabulary associated with it: independent variable,
dependent variable, constant, control, observation.

Scenario: Choco Connection

Mrs. Nadao wanted to know whether or not his students would do

better on a quiz if she promised them candy. She went to the science library
and read several studies about the effect of giving food to lab animals. She
found out that if animals were given food as a reward for doing something,

they usually did better the more reward they were given. She guessed that
the more chocolates that his students were promised, the better they would
do on the quiz. He had all of his classes participate in the experiment. There
were four groups in all. Each group had the same amount of boys and girls,
they were all given the same quiz, they were all the same age, the same
ability, and they were all from the same background. The first group was not
promised any candy if they did well on the quiz. The second group was
promised 1 chocolate bar if they did well on the quiz. The third group was
promised 2 chocolate bars if they did well on the quiz. The fourth group was
promised 3 chocolate bars if they did well on the quiz. Group #1 got an
average of 70% on the quiz. Group #2 got an average of 80% on the quiz.
Group #3 got an average of 90% on the quiz. Group #4 got an average of 95%
on the quiz. Mrs. Nadao then decided that the more chocolate a group was
promised, the better they did on quizzes. She then repeated the experiment
with different students.

Using the information provided in the scenario, fill in the table below
