Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Abigail Elsavage Date: 4/15

Group Size: 20 Students Allotted Time: 50 minutes

Subject or Topic: Lesson #5 The Basic Needs of Humans Grade level: 3rd

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

● 3.1.3.A2 : Describe the basic needs of living things and their dependence on light,
food, air, water, and shelter.

● NGSS: 3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced
by the environment.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
● The students will be able to determine the 5 basic needs for human survival.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1) Anecdotal notes 1. Observational
2) Test 2. Students will complete a unit test
Assessment Scale:
Test assessment scale:
● 10-15 correct answers = proficient
● <10 correct answers = below basic

Subject Matter/Content:

Prerequisites:
● Students must have some knowledge about the basic needs of plants and animals.
● Students must have some knowledge about wants and needs.

Key Vocabulary:
● Nutrient: a substance that is needed for healthy growth, development, and functioning
Fruits and vegetables have important nutrients. Plants get nutrients from the soil.
● Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body take in calcium from the foods
that we eat. Together, calcium and vitamin D build bones and keep them strong.
Vitamin D also plays a part in heart health and fighting infection.
● Respiration: Respiration is the process that all living things go through to create the
energy they need to live. This happens in the cells, so it is also called cellular
respiration. It usually involves exchanging two gases—oxygen and carbon dioxide

Content/Facts:
● This lesson will cover the 5 basic needs for human survival
○ Light, air, shelter, food, and water
● Water: Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is
composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion,
absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance
of body temperature.
● Light: Boost’s vitamin D. When exposed to sunlight, the skin absorbs vitamin D, a
critical nutrient for humans.
● Shelter: Shelter is one of our basic needs: it is a place that can protect us from the
elements, keep us warm and safe, and give us the encouragement to satisfy our other
needs.
● Food: Simply put, food fuels the human body. Without it, the body cannot grow or
perform at its best, the organs stop working properly, and the body eventually dies.
Food supplies nutrients, which are used by every cell in the body as building materials
and fuel.
● Air: Human Need of Air Fresh air is required for respiration and for transport of heat
and vapor emitted from the human body
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
● The teacher will write the following essential question on the board.
○ What are the 5 basic human needs for survival?
● The teacher will pass out a slip for students to record their responses on.
● The teacher will encourage students to write what they need to survive.
● *Allow 5 minutes for students to complete the essential question slip.
● Once students are finished, the teacher will collect the worksheet.
● The teacher will find the “favorite no” and post it on the board.
● The teacher will explain why this is her favorite no throughout the lesson.
Development/Teaching Approaches
● The teacher will do basic needs of human’s inquiry activity.
● The teacher will pass out the inquiry activity worksheet.
● The teacher will provide students with various materials to create a human.
● Next, the teacher will inform the students that they must supply their human with their
basic needs.
● The teacher will provide various materials for the students to design an environment
which humans can live in.
● Allow students 15 minutes to complete the activity.
● As students are working, the teacher will walk around the classroom and make
anecdotal notes.
● When students are finished, have them place their project on their desk.
● Have the students walk around the room to observe everyone's creation.
● The teacher will play the following video of the story If You Give a Mouse a Cookie:
https://youtu.be/Gyk55GYnGl0 (The teacher will not introduce the purpose of reading
the book)
● After the story, have the following discussion: “I noticed the mouse wants a lot of
things in the story. However, some of his wants are not necessary for life.
○ What are some things the mouse doesn't really need?
○ Do you need those things?
○ What are the things the mouse needs?
○ Do you need those things?
○ What similarities do you have with the mouse? (At this point, the teacher
should make sure students understand the connection between humans and
animals- we are all living things who need the same things!)
● The teacher will show a PowerPoint teaching the 5 basic needs of human life.
● As the teacher shows the PowerPoint, the students will fill in the “My Basic Human
Needs Book.”
● At this point, allow students to make changes to their inquiry project if they missed a
few basic needs.
● *Allow 5 minutes to make any changes.
● Next, the students will do a Venn diagram comparing the basic needs of plants,
animals, and humans.
● *Pass out the Venn diagram paper
● The teacher will put students into groups to work on the assignment.
● *Give the students 5 minutes to work on the assignment.
● When everyone has finished, the teacher will ask for groups to share their answers.
● The teacher will write some answers on a big anchor chart on the board.
● The teacher will ask a question to get students to understand the big picture of this
lesson
○ What do you notice is the same between the basic needs of plants, animals, and
humans?
■ Answer: They are the same! Explain to students that we are all living
things, therefore, we all require the same basic needs for life. Explain
how humans use plants and animals for food.
● The teacher will give the unit assessment at this time.
● Pass out the assessment.
● The teacher will review the directions with the students.
● *Allow 20 minutes for students to complete the assessment.
● -Walk around and observe students while they take the assessment.
● -When students are finished, collect the assessment for grading.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● The teacher will close the unit by having the students get into a circle on the floor.
● The teacher will throw a beach ball around to students.
● When the student gets the beach ball, they must answer 1 of the questions their left
thumb lands on.
○ Some of the questions on the beach ball:
■ Name one thing you learned about camouflage.
■ Name one thing you learned about the basic needs of living things.
■ Name your favorite activity from the unit.
■ What video was your favorite from the unit?
■ What was your favorite fact that you learned from the unit?
● The teacher will close by thanking the students for being the best scientists during this
amazing unit!

Accommodations/Differentiation:
Follow all IEPs
● Since student X needs extra time with tests, student X will have extra time to take the
test at the end of the day.

● Essential question worksheet (20)
● Inquiry activity worksheet (20)
● Materials to create a human
● Materials for an environment for a human
● If you give a mouse a cookie video: https://youtu.be/Gyk55GYnGl0
