II. Overview

A. Introduction

21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World facilitates the understanding and analysis of
literary texts in various genres across culture. Its overall goal is to help learners gain an increased
appreciation of literature from the 21st century and ultimately to inspire them to view the world in a
different light–a world where differences are set aside, and traditions of the past coexist in harmony with
values of the present.
There are many new genres coming out in Philippine literature. Some of them have gained ground and
following. Some have branched out to other forms of media, such as theater or movies. Some are just
beginning and are starting to blaze their own path in the local literature scene.

E. Objectives/ Intended Outcome:
At the end of the lesson, the students must have:
1. Identified the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of
Philippine literary history from precolonial to contemporary;
2. Identified representative texts and authors from each region;
3. Valued the contributions of local writers to the development of
literary traditions;
4. Explained the relationship of the context with the text’s meaning;
5. Produced a creative representation of a literary text by applying
multimedia skills.

The KWL Chart is an instructional reading strategy that is used to guide students through a lesson. Students

Philippine literature is constantly evolving, which means that there are more outputs in
which you as a student will enjoy in the near future. One of these is the comic book industry,
which is a good way for you to read and be informed in a creative and enjoyable manner.
The comics or komiks, as it is known in the Philippines, is one of
the most beloved forms of published work. Komiks or Comics are
widespread and popular throughout the country from 1920s to the
present. It is partially inspired by American mainstream comic strips
and comic books during the early 20th century.
Carlo Vergara’s Ang Kagilas-Gilas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni
Zsazsa Zaturnnah has gained popularity among Filipino readers,
eventually maing impacts in Philippine theater and movies and won
the National Book Award in 2003 despite being self published.

Here are 3 of the latest genres emerging in Philippine literature.
 Speculative Fiction
- This is an umbrella term in the country’s literature that includes all genres of horror, fantasy,
science fiction, magical, and other nonrealist genres.
 Avant-garde Poetry
- These are poems that push the boundaries of what is expected as the norm. In that sense, these
kinds of poems experiment with form, phrasing, idea, imagery and the like.
 Contemporary Essay
- The contemporary essay nowadays is unrestricted and explores diverse topics such as
dysfunctional families. LGBTQ issues, terrorism, religion and or faith.
