LAB EXERCISE 5

PROBLEM NO. 1

In the two-peg test of a dumpy level, the following observation are taken:

Where…
a = rod reading on A with instrument set up near A.
b = rod reading on B with instrument set up near A.
c = rod reading on B with instrument set up near B.
d = rod reading on A with instrument set up near B

a.) Determine if the line of sight is in adjustment and explain your answer.

DEa = (a-b) DEb = (d-c)

= 2.85m – 1.50m = 3.65 – 2.55

= 1.35m = 1.1m

The two differences in elevation are not equal. So, the line of sight is not in adjustment.
b.) If the line of sight is not in adjustment, determine the correct rod reading on A with the instrument still
set up near B.
( a−b )−(d−c)
TDE= d’ = c + TDE
2

( 2.85−1.50 ) −(3.65−2.55)
TDE= d’ = 2.55 + 0.125
2

TDE= 0.125 d’ = 2.675m

c.) Determine the error in the line of sight for the net distance AB

E = d – d’
E = 3.65 – 2.675
E = 0.975m

d.) Explain how the line of sight of the instrument should be adjusted.

*To adjust the line of sight, the horizontal cross hair should read 0.919m (or d’) on the rod held at A
while the instrument is still set up near B.

PROBLEM NO. 2

Determine the combined effects of the earth’s curvature and atmospheric refraction on sight distances
of 60, 90, 120, 150, 500 meters.
2
60
h’60 = 0.0675 K² = 0.0675 ( 1000 ) = 0.000243m
90
h’90 = 0.0675 K² = 0.0675 ( ¿ ² = 0.000547m
1000

120
h’90 = 0.0675 K² = 0.0675 ( )² = 0.000972m
1000

120
h’90 = 0.0675 K² = 0.0675 ( )² = 0.001519m
1000

500
h’90 = 0.0675 K² = 0.0675 ( ) ² = 0.016875m
1000
PROBLEM NO. 3

A woman standing on a beach can just see the top of a lighthouse 24.140 km away. If her eye height
above sea level is 1.738m, determine the height of the lighthouse above sea level.

Solution:

hw' = 0.0671(K1) ²

1.738 = 0.0671(K1) ²

K = 5.089 kms.

K2 = K - K1

K2 = 24.140 - 5.089 = 19.051kms.

h'L= 0.0671 (K2) ²

h’L = 0.0671(19.051) ² = 24.353 m
