Electronic Language Acquisition using Philippines’ Polyglot Chart: A Local

Phonological Software Application

I. Introduction

Language posed as one of the substantial elements that affect the whole aspect of communication
activities. Students specifically utilize different portions of English language skills such as
listening, speaking, reading, and writing for their proficiency and communication (Grabe & Stoller,
2002). Besides, Ahmadi (2017) stated that one of the important elements for learning is the
method that instructors use in their classes to facilitate the language learning process. According
to Becker (2000), computers are viewed as a central instructional instrument in language classes
in which teachers have convenient access, are sufficiently prepared, and have some self-
determination in the curriculum. Hence, teachers evaluated technology as a significant part of
providing high-quality education.

The digital reality for today’s situation of the new generation and other age cohorts is swiftly
growing and convenient particularly to the students. Set of students these days have their
cellphones that let us have fast and accessible communication across borders, having an
availability with an internet connection. Similarly, we can infer that whenever there is an unfamiliar
word where students are asked for, it means pulling up an internet browser, input a specific idea
in google, and there will be a lot of associated sources of information like essays researches,
images, videos interrelated with the topic given there are numerous choices that they may take
advantage of. Concerning that, an outdated way of teaching style or instruction would be a less
consideration and does not showcase any interactive way of integration anymore especially in
this day and age wherein online usage is more relevant. As regards that, educators should design
an engaging framework of teaching models that will best suit the students’ interest to learn.

A collaborative way of learning is required to set with high priority. Also, teachers should consider
the factor that the students have their learning styles including audio-visual, visual, and audio
means of attainment. Other than that, our present teacher must learn to facilitate an interactive
style of teaching with the help of technology as far as the student’s comprehension and
satisfaction are concerned. Interactive based learning engrossed student’s interests as it values
the comfortability of the learners because teachers will be able to use online apps and videos like

the proposed online application Philippines Polyglot Chart (PPC) that will hook the students’
attention and later on expands their comprehension for a high increase of student’s achievement.
Aside from that, using the flipped classroom methodology considering the E-learning strategy of
teaching language herein the Philippines, the Filipino version of the Polyglot app will certainly
enrich the student’s abstract thoughts and performances.

Having a deeper contextualization about the said E-learning apps, in this research you will know
the background of the application as it is aiming for a widely used across the nation. First, this
research proposed to introduce students to comprehensive features of the PPC app which is an
electronic tool accessible online to interpret/translate different languages or dialects in the
Philippines anytime. This application will be planned and formulated to use before the help of
numerous experts in language translation and interpretation. Similar to other apps like Grammarly
generated by language professionals in the world. Since diverse languages are presented in the
classroom, it will be subjected to guide the teachers in helping their students to learn how to
understand every language, and it will incorporate collaborative integration that the students will
surely enjoy in their comfortability and interaction with their classmates.

To add, this app also includes enticing quizzes, discussions, or examinations. Making it more
convenient to grasp any idea with their translation of dialects that may be difficult for them to
understand. It is a game-based classroom response system played by the whole class in real-
time. Also, there are many types of tests and quizzes that the teacher can use including multiple-
choices, open-ended/close-ended questions, and many app structures, as it stands not just a
guide to hone the multilingual skills but also to provide a learning process at the same time. To
properly facilitate this proposed program in the classroom setting, those activities will be projected
on the screen wherein students can easily look for the correct conversion of each word. Also, the
PPC app will propose to be available for iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android devices as well as
on desktop (PCs, laptops, and Mac computers) for them to download it free and enjoy the offline
feature of the app. Likewise, it acts as an educational tool that requires to be implemented at
schools nationwide. With assurance, there will be a great impact on students’ development in
terms of language acquisition and the goal to create a multilingual set of students and
knowledgeable enough with the varied dialects here in our country. Other than that, students,
parents, teachers, school administrators, and other community stakeholders will soon find the
PPC app as one of the effective ways of better engagement of students in a fun yet encouraging
learning environment. Students will also be exposed to this social learning platform that allows

educators to ask questions using recording videos, that contain compilations of motivational
videos about the uses of languages here in the Philippines.

McKeachie (2011), briefly discusses that learner’s dynamic participation in classroom settings
with the presence of discussions and technology integration are the best methodologies that
teachers could use because of student’s interests. Interactive-based learning with the help of
electronic devices and the abovementioned online app offers countless advantages and benefits
not just to our students but also it will become easier for our teacher’s way of instruction. It is
substantial that the students will not only learn a dialect for their grades but also with their
comfortability, as we all know that children’s brain is the most critical part especially during their
period of growth, in which their brain is prone with life experience-dependent situations.

II. Rationale

Recognizing technology as an effective tool for learners is a significant part of their learning
process. Costley (2014) said that educators should model the use of technology to support the
curriculum so that learners can increase the true use of technology in learning their language
skills as students’ cooperation can be increased. Studies have been proven that the technological
advantages in teaching and learning the English language is an inclusive approach that will
highlight the student’s capability to assimilate. Hennessy (2005) discussed the use of ICT which
acts as a catalyst in encouraging instructors and students to work innovatively. Initially, active
learners can retain more information. Subsequently, they will opt to ask for more information
interpreting it in different languages. Lastly, it will increase their language learning skills, the same
with the goal of this paper focusing on the successful outcome for learner’s amalgamation through
the help of technology specifically this Philippines’ Polyglot Chart App.

Utilizing technology integration will emphasize the students’ outcome who will actively perform in
their class. Marzano (2011) briefly discussed that tools such as interactive whiteboards enable
children to engage in classroom games, view websites, and review problems step by step. We all
know the fact that every day is new learning most especially to young students. Likewise, McCurry
(2011) also added that the technology is evolving, in traditional lectures the teacher gives a large
quantity of material, in which he elaborated that in this set-up, the student is not paying attention
so learning will not happen. Therefore, this paper will be of great help in a classroom setting to
impart data-based results using electronic learning, to be more concerted, and increase the

student’s comprehension. Adding the reality that social learning theories help us to comprehend
how people learn in social contexts (learn from each other) and informs us on how we, as
teachers, construct active learning societies (Vygotsky 1978). Further, a proponent of this paper
proclaimed that technology usage leads to the improvement of learners and teachers, thus, it will
contribute a lot to attain educational needs.

III. Goals and Objectives

The goal of this paper is to employ the regular usage of the Philippines’ Polyglot Chart software
application to all of the schools across the entire country that will surely stabilize students’
development in and out of the classrooms through the help of technological advancement. And,
to be able to achieve the goal, the proponent works on the following objectives:

• to introduce the diverse features of the new software application to students’ interactive
learning in schools with the guidance of their teachers;

• to promote the significance of using this app in mastering every language/dialect we have
in the Philippines;

• to develop each student’s familiarity with the correct pronunciation, structure,

(phonological, semantical, syntactical, lexical aspect) of different languages presented
nationwide;

• to construct an interactive-based classroom nationwide with technology integration that

can uplift student’s interest to participate and learn in their comfortability and language
appreciation; and

• to sustain the importance of saving our languages by employing well-trained teachers and
supportive government sectors about different languages in the country.

VI. Conclusion

In this paper, the researcher proclaimed some imperative issues appropriate to the use of
technology in language learning as they can coexist together. With the help of the Philippines’
Polyglot Chart Application students will find their strategic thinking in the proper translation of
each word in various dialects given in the country. On the contrary, facilitators of learning need
provision and training for integrating technology into language teaching. It is a resource that can
open the mindsets of readers that there is a great impact in incorporating technology innovation
in finding methods on how to teach the learners more constructive and substantial. In addition,
the paper showed that the use of technologies plays a key role in language learning based on the
student’s own learning pace and self-comprehension. Truly, the PPC app creates high motivation
in learners for the effective learning of language skills. Furthermore, the paper embodied that
learners should use technology to enhance their language skills especially the usage of the PPC
App because it has a crucial role in developing learners’ ingenuity and offers them stimulating,
