(QUESTIONS)
i. What part of the work of the United Nations appears to have yielded the most
promising result?
Ans) It is true that the United Nations Organization has not been able to establish
peace, which was the driving force for its origin. With the passage of time, it has lost
its effectiveness in influencing the war policies of the world and has not been able to
stop war at international borders. However on the other hand, it has helped the
world to fight against poverty, diseases and social evils. For example, narcotics and
other harmful activities are to be controlled internationally for a healthy life, also
clean and pure atmosphere in various countries of the world on an emergency basis
irrespective of colour, caste and creed. Thus, the work of UN has yielded the most
promising results in solving social and economical problems.

ii. Why did the notice in the newspaper call Amalie Von Cernogratz, a valued
friend of the Baron and the Baroness?
Ans) On 29th December, at Castle Cernogratz, the notice in the newspaper called
Amalie Von Cernogratz a valued friend of the Baron and the Baroness Gruebel. The
news of Amalie-Von-Cernogratz’s death and her affiliation to the Cernogratz family,
was confirmed in the newspaper the following day.
If either the Baron or the Baroness Gruebel put the notice in the newspaper, then
they were claiming the distinction of friendship with the last of the Cernogratz’s
race. This of course was a hollow pretension, since they actually despised her.
OR
What are the strange events that happened at the time of a Cernogratz’s death
in the Castle of Cernogratz?
Ans) The Wolves of Cernogratz, a weird yet delightful tale, is an adaptation by H.H
Munro Saki. The strange events that happened at the time of Cernogratz’s death in
the Castle of Cernogratz were that wolves came from far and near in scores and
glided in the shadows. They howled in chorus at the edge of the forest just before
the hour of death. Then the dogs of the castle, village and all the farms around would
bark in fear and anger at the wolf chorus.
Moreover, as the soul of the dying one left its body, a tree would crash in the park.
But no wolf howled and no tree fell when a stranger died in the castle.

iii. What does the writer mean by the phrase “scientific and unscientific work” in
the lesson ‘Science and Scientists’?
Ans) By the phrase ‘unscientific work’ the writer refers to piece of work which is
inexact and not orderly arranged, or whose author has jumped to the conclusion
without giving sufficient evidences and supporting data. Unscientific work also
refers to such a piece of work in which the writer has included his personal liking
and disliking.
While the phrase ‘scientific work’ refers to a piece of work which is exact and
orderly arranged, and whose writer has provided its conclusion with sufficient
evidences and supporting data. In addition, the writer has maintained its objectivity,
has excluded his personal liking and disliking. Moreover, the main object of a
scientific work is to find out the truth.
OR
Describe the phrase ‘Jumping to Conclusion’?
Ans) The phrase ‘Jumping to conclusion’ means to form a conclusion prematurely
based on the personal prejudices. It also means that the conclusions are not
correctly arrived at, with the help of sound and sufficient evidences and supporting
data.
iv. Elaborate the attitude of the soldiers in Birkenhead Drill?
Ans) The soldiers maintained perfect discipline, unlike the conventional attitude;
they showed great heroism, courage and sense of duty. The soldiers and their
captain exhibited supreme courage in their readiness to save women and children at
the cost of their lives. They maintained perfect discipline when they knew the death
was certain within minutes. They never thought or tried to jump into the lifeboats
that could carry only 180 people, they carried out their commander’s order. Even
the certain death could not move them to a least panic or chaos. Every soldier was a
hero in his behavior. A rescued officer reported, “The determination of hands was
far more than I thought could be affected by the best discipline. Everyone did as
directed”.

v. Why did every one suspect Mr. King as a criminal in the ‘Hostile Witness’?
Johnson, Carter and Abbott were suspicious of King because the description of the
murderer announced on the radio fitted him as he was a rather respectable looking
person of a medium built and he was reluctant to hand over keys to Manning. So
they thought that he was the real murderer.

vi. Discuss the purpose of ‘Two Minutes’ Silence’?

Ans) Robert Lynd explains his view-point that the people of London, and even in
some other countries of the world, celebrate the annual event of ‘Two Minutes’
Silence’ which is also known as ‘Armistice Day’. Since 1919, on the second Sunday of
November, otherwise known as Remembrance Sunday, a two-minute silence is
observed at war memorials and other public spaces across the UK. During these two
minutes, the traffic of the streets dies down into perfect stillness and every human
being in sight stands motionless. The purpose of observing the two-minute silence is
to pay a tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country in the two
world wars.
OR
On what grounds does Robert Lynd defend conversation about weather?
Ans) Robert Lynd, the author of this article, defends conversation about the weather
on the grounds that a conversation must be based on mutual sympathy. A common
note of sympathy is struck by talking about experiences that are shared by both.
Weather is one experience and so, there is no reason why one should avoid making
it the topic of one’s talk.

vii. What was the manager’s reaction when the author told him that he wanted to
see him alone?
Ans) When the author told the manager that he would like to see him alone, the
manager mistook the author to be a detective from Pinkerton’s Agency because of
his foolish behaviour and confused manner and style. He thought that he had
brought some secret about business. Hence, the manager took him in his private
room, locked it and told the author that they were safe and inquired about his visit.
The manager’s reaction was based on misconception and misunderstanding.

viii. Why did the Congress leaders spend most of the Second World War in prison?
Ans) The Congress leaders spent most of the Second World War in prison on
account of their mass civil disobedience plan against India’s declaration of war. The
All-India Congress Committee proclaimed a mass protest demanding what Gandhi
called “an orderly British withdrawal” from India. Almost the entire Indian National
Congress leadership, and not just at the national level, was imprisoned without trial
within hours after Gandhi’s speech. Most of them spent the rest of the war in prison
and out of contact with the masses. The reason they were sent by the government to
prison was to prevent them from carrying out their plans against the British
government.
ix. According to Lord Amiens, what challenges should one be prepared to face in
the forest life?
Ans) The singer, Lord Amiens, in his song is inviting the city dwellers to the Forest
of Arden, to live and enjoy the carefree life like him. The singer, in his song, while
inviting the city dweller to the Forest of Arden, cautions them by saying that though
life in the forest is enjoyable and carefree, yet it is not without difficulties. They have
to face the winter and the rough stormy weather. Also they have to live in the sun; it
means that there will be no shelter to protect them from the sun. They have to find
their own food since they will not be provided with cooked food, as in their homes,
but they will have to hunt for their own food and be contented with whatever they
get in the forest.

x. Why is Lucy Gray believed to be a living child even after her death?
Ans: William Wordsworth is not only a poet of nature but also a humanist. The idea
behind writing the poem Lucy Gray is that of Humanism. He wants to tell his readers
that innocent children when they leave this temporary world, they become the part
of nature and they never die but they dwell in the paradise. Hence, they are alive.
Even after her death, the people of the area think that Lucy is still a living child.
When someone passes from the moor they can see the beautiful face of Lucy Gray,
running swiftly alone, as before, singing a solitary and melancholic song on the
barren piece of the land. William Wordsworth believes that Lucy is a living child; she
has been seen playing, jumping, going forward and never looking behind. It is for
this reason that the poet says in his poem,
“Yet some maintain to this day she is a living child”.
OR
xi. According to G.Allana, what is the thing that prevents man from approaching
God?
The author of this poem is Ghulam Ali Allana (G.Allana) is a famous poet of 20th
century. According to him the poem indicates that religion is a very simple thing but
people have made it so complicated. The message of this poem is that "Don't blindly
follow the people, better to read the scripture revealed by the God as it is the
only source to worldly and hereafter success."
In the poem "I had reached your doorstep" the poet teaches us the self-realization
that what we are looking for lies within us. We should know about our reality and
learn the lesson that we have forgotten. We do not need to search anything far and
wide. We only need to discover our self.

xii. What penalties does the minstrel foresee for the man who has no love for his
native land?
Ans) The minstrel foresees grave penalties faced by the person who possesses no
love for his country. The man, who is unpatriotic and selfish, and who runs after
wealth and worldly comforts, will have to suffer great loss and will die a double
death. Firstly, he will face his natural physical death. Secondly, after his natural
death, he will face a second death by which he will perish from the minds of people.
No one will mourn or weep over his death and no minstrel will sing songs in his
memory or in his praise. He will never be remembered and will be forgotten forever.

xiii. How did the shepherd succeed in saving the life of Abbot?
Ans) The shepherd had God bestowed intelligence and wit. He persuaded the Abbot
to give him his dress along with his servants and horses so that he would disguise
himself as the Abbot and go to the court of King John to answer his three questions.
He assured the Abbot that he would not be recognized by anyone. Then, he went to
the court and answered those three questions correctly. The King was greatly
pleased with the wit and the merry jest of the shepherd and offered him the post of
the Abbot. But, the shepherd refused the offer saying that he was illiterate, so the
King rewarded him with four nobles per week for his witty answers and also
pardoned the Abbot. In this way the shepherd saved the life of the Abbot of
Canterbury.
xiv. Why did the Chief’s eye flash in the poem ‘Incident of the French Camp’?
Ans) The Chief’s eye flashed means that Napoleon was very much delighted by the
news of victory. His eyes flashed with joy but when he saw that the young man was
bleeding as a result of deep wound on his chest. He became sad and darkness spread
before Napoleon's eyes. The poet also describes the way in which the young soldier
informed Napoleon of their success and the reaction of the Emperor to this good
news. Although the young man was in intense pain and suffering, he finally opened
his lips, and with a great sense of pleasure and personal pride, informed Napoleon of
the annexation of the German City.
The soldier proudly declared that he felt joy and thrill in giving his life for his
country. There was a smile of pride and satisfaction on the young soldier’s lips as he
fell dead near his emperor’s feet.

xv. What kind of land falls prey to “hastening ills” as stated by Oliver Goldsmith?
Ans) The village ‘Auburn’ has been mentioned in the poem ‘The Deserted Village’.
Many drastic changes took place in the village that Goldsmith loved which were its
industrialization and the implementation of scientific inventions before which it
used to be the happiest and the most beautiful place on earth. It offered health and
cheerfulness to its dwellers and had many charms and beauties in its lap.
“Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain”.
Health and happiness were replaced by wealth and destruction of the villagers.
“Where wealth accumulates, and men decay”
These drastic changes resulted in the depopulation and ruin of this once-thriving
English village.

xvi. What qualities does Henry Wotton describe to achieve a happy life?
Ans) The poem ‘The Character of a Happy Life’ by Sir Henry Wotton is a moralizing
piece of writing. The poet points to the sterling qualities of head and heart needed in
a person to lead a life of contentment and bliss. Such a person enjoys full freedom
and is a master of his life since he is never dictated by others. He is steadfast and
firm on the paths of honesty and truth. The poet says that a happy man has control
upon his desires and passions. His life is free from rumours and he bears a clear
conscience. It is due to all these qualities present in him that he has all the
contentment in his life which in turn makes him a happy person.

xvii. What is a Sonnet? What inspired William Wordsworth to write ‘Sonnet

Composed upon Westminster Bridge’?
Ans) A Sonnet is a short fourteen lines poem. There are two famous types of sonnets
known as the Italian Sonnet and Shakespearean Sonnet.
An Italian sonnet is a sonnet which is divided into two stanzas. The stanza of first
eight lines is known as Octave and the stanza of last six lines is called Sestet;
whereas, a Shakespearean sonnet is divided into four stanzas having three stanzas
of four lines and one stanza of last two lines. The four lines stanza is called Quatrain
and two lines stanza is called Couplet. Thus the main difference between these two
type of sonnets lies in the distribution of stanzas and the rhyming scheme.
The remarkable beauty of London, just after sunrise, struck him so forcefully that he
was moved to write this beautiful sonnet. Here in this sonnet, the poet seems to be
inspired by the silent beauty of the early morning which seems to have clothed the
entire city of London and says that earth has no comparison to this beautiful,
majestic sight. The poet remarks that a person has a very dull and an unimaginative
soul, who passes by the city at this time and is not touched by this beautiful view.
The poet is impressed by the glittering brightness, in the early morning’s clean and
smokeless air, of the ships, towers and all other public buildings which lay on the
open fields up to the clear blue skies above. Wordsworth is astounded by the
strange peacefulness of the mighty city which is so busy throughout the day and
conveys his impression in the beautiful closing lines of the sonnet as:
“Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!”

xviii. Describe Morcerf as a father and a husband. OR “Albert is a gentleman in real

sense.”Discuss.
From the beginning of the play, the Count of Morcerf is shown to be involved in
various acts of villainy, such as in his youth, he framed a trap against the innocent
young, Count of Monte Cristo or Edmond Dantes and got him convicted as a spy and
condemned to lifetime imprisonment in an underground dungeon. Another
villainous act committed by him was that he falsely informed Mercedes, to whom
Dantes was engaged, that Dantes had died in a prison and married her. Later, in the
year 1823, while he was serving in the French army as a captain, this villain
committed yet another gross act of villainy by taking bribes from the Turks, with
whom France was then at war, and arranged the surrender of the Fortress of Yanina
to them. Hence it proves that ‘the Count of Morcerf was a villain through and
through’.

xix. Write three dominating qualities of Prof.Henry Corrie, Mrs.Meldon, Count of

Morcerf, Monte Cristo, Albert and the Countess of Morcerf.
Mrs.Meldon:
Patriotic Lady: Mrs. Meldon is a very patriotic lady. She loves her country more
than her brother and his invention. She kills her brother for the betterment of the
nation and the country. This is the highest price that the poor lady has to pay for her
noble character.

Views about Statesmen: Mrs. Meldon has realized the role that statesmen play in
wars, they send off others to become fuel and fodder of war, and themselves enjoy
life in cities. When Professor Henry Corrie asks her to take “broad statesmen view
about the war, she taunts him.
She says:-“If Eddie had been a statesman, he would not have gone to the war.
He would have compelled some other person to go.”

Personification of Peace and Love for Human: Mrs. Meldon is an embodiment of

peace, love and optimism. By virtue of her peace loving nature, she condemns the
foul invention of Corrie and forces him to destroy his invention. Her sincere
attachment to mankind is crystal clear when she says:-
“Your bomb will destroy life, Henry I beg of you to destroy it”
This is the sentiment and her love for human beings that lead to the dramatic death
of Corrie. She kills her brother in the greater interest of human race.

PROFESSOR HENRY CORRIE:

Self Centered, Selfish and Greedy Fellow: Professor Henry Corrie is an
embodiment of materialism. He has complete materialistic attitude towards life
which has turned his life into a selfish, self – centered and greedy person. He is
thirsty for name and fame. He runs for worldly glamour and richness. The glitters
and luster of wealth and fame make him insensitive to his home, his family, his
country and to humanity in general. His greedy nature becomes crystal clear by his
words.
“I have got exactly what I wanted, Charlotte. Absolutely the thing. This
will bring fame and fortune to me. I shall be rich now, but more than
that, I shall be famous”.
Unpatriotic Person: Professor Corrie is totally unhinged by the lust for wealth and
fame. He is mad after wealth. Greed and lust for wealth has turned him not only a
materialistic and selfish but also into an unpatriotic being. It becomes clear when he
says:
“I shall offer it first to the British Govt. of course but, if they won’t pay
my price, I will offer it to somebody else”.
Pessimist Attitude: Professor Henry Corrie is out and out a Pessimist. He thinks
that wars should be made as horrible and terrible as possible, so that nations may
not venture upon wars. The weapons should be made so terrible that they would
demolish and abolish the whole city within no time, in this way if the war occurs it
would end at once. He says:-
“I don’t believe that wars will ever end”.

COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO:

A WISE PLANNER:
The way the Count of Monte Cristo devises his plan to take his revenge from the
Count of Morcerf reveals him as a wise and prudent planner. Those fourteen years
spent in the dungeon gave him time to think and execute his plan in a skillful way.
He believes in justice and in slow and surely planned revenge. This is what he
advises his friend Albert too:
“An eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth. This is the rule I follow.”
A GALLANT AND COOL MINDED MAN:
The Count of Monte Cristo is a gallant man. He is famous all around Paris as a very
skillful sword man and an accurate shooter. He is also a cool minded man and had
never been frustrated under any circumstances. In the words of Morcerf,
“The foreign Count who has taken the whole Paris by storm.”
IMMENSELY DETERMINED:
The Count of Monte Cristo is an immensely determined man, possessing strong will
power and endurance. He escaped from the prison and successfully established
himself from an unfortunate prisoner to a notable Count.
“Fourteen years is a large slice from a man’s life.”
ALBERT
MAN OF DETERMINATION: Beyond any doubt, Albert appears in the course of the
play as a man of determination. He has a very strong determination to find out the
name of the person who has brought disgrace to his family. He is replete with rage
and wants to take revenge of his family honour.
“I must seek out the man who has done this thing and punish him. I must put a
sharp sword of mine through his body.”

MORAL COURAGE:
Albert’s moral courage is more appreciable and desirable in his personality than
anything else. Though, he is very bold and courageous, but also this is led by strong
moral values. He feels no shame to apologise if he has done something wrong. When
his mother reveals the truth to him, he realises his mistake and apologises to Count
of Monte Cristo for challenging him. He has the moral courage to tell his father that
he was on the wrong.
“I apologized most humbly, and hope that he would continue to be my friend.”
BOLD AND COURAGEOUS:
Throughout the play Albert remains bold and courageous. When he comes to know
about the person who has brought disgrace to his family, he does not hesitate to
throw a challenge to Count of Monte Cristo in spite of knowing that the enemy is an
excellent marks man. He sacrifices his friendship to his duty.
“I mean to throw my glove into his face”

COUNT OF MORCERF:
A Selfish Person:
We know by his pale face , compressed lips and crafty expression that he is a wicked
man.
He tells his wife, “And since we were not very good friends before. I take it, we
are not likely to be better friends now “.
The Count of Morcerf has a disgraceful past. His first black deed comes to light when
we discover that twenty years ago, he has hatched a plot against the Count of Monte
Cristo and has caused him imprisonment for the rest of his life. We know more
about his villainy when he marries Mercedes the beautiful fiancé of Count of Monte
Cristo by convincing falsely that the Count of Monte Cristo is dead. He destroys the
happy relationship of two people for the sake of his selfish motives. It proves that he
is a cruel husband and a heartless father. He gives more importance to his selfish
motives than to his wife and son. His wife calls him “mean and heartless”.

Mean and Cruel Father:

He appreciates his son’s idea of fighting a duel but he doesn’t realize that he is
risking his son’s life. He knew very well that the tide had turned against him. His
fame was fake, his nobility was false and his high position was based on his weak
foundations of fraud and treachery. In the last scene, he was killed by his own shot.

A Traitor to His Country:

Soon the force of nature turns against him. He begins to feel the bitter taste of his
evil deeds. His game of treachery is exposed by the Count of Monte Cristo. In the
Chamber of Deputies he was proved to be a traitor. His fame and social position
were fallen to the ground. He was disgraced in the eyes of people. His wife and son
had deserted him.

COUNTESS OF MORCERF
LOVING MOTHER
The Countess of Morcerf loved Albert very much. She was worried when Albert
challenged the Count of Monte Cristo to a duel. She was afraid that her son might be
killed in duel because he was young and inexperienced. Therefore she went to the
house of Monte Cristo and begged him not to kill her son.
NOBLE AND HONEST LADY:
The Countess of Morcerf did not want Albert or Monte Cristo be killed in the duel.
On the return from Monte Cristo’s house, she told everything to Albert. When Albert
came to know about his father’s character he begged pardon from Monte Cristo.
Thus the duel did not take place and the life of an innocent person was saved. It
shows that she was a wise lady.
Although her husband did not treat her well, yet she lived with him like a sincere
wife. She bore all the difficulties patiently.

xx. What did Mrs.Meldon discover on the death anniversary of Eddie?

Ans) Eddie was the son of Mrs.Meldon who was killed in the First World War.
Mrs.Meldon met a boy in the town, who was in Eddie’s battalion told Mrs.Meldon
that Eddie was killed by a shell, along with four other soldiers. They were waiting in
a shallow trench for eight days and nights until further orders when a shell suddenly
came in the middle of them and utterly destroyed them leaving nothing of their
bodies to be buried. Mrs.Meldon was extremely shocked to know this bitter truth
about her son’s death and she expressed her grief in a very touching and appealing
way to her brother, Professor Henry Corrie in these words:
“Don’t you think this is horrible, Henry? There was no decency in his death!”

xxi. Describe the Corrie’s bomb.

Ans) Professor Henry Corrie has invented a formula of a bomb and discovered the
combination of poison and explosive gases. Wherever it falls, it will release powerful
poisonous gases which have no taste and smell. No one will know what he or she has
inhaled until they will see their bodies rotting.
It is the irony of humanity that Professor Henry Corrie calls his invention of a fatal
bomb the “most humanitarian”. He thinks that by inventing a deadlier bomb he has
done a great job to humanity. Because his fatal bomb is going to save the time and
change the difficult format of war and will enable mankind to kill many and destroy
whole cities easily and quickly.
xxii. What did Mrs.Meldon want her brother to do to save humanity?
Ans) Mrs. Meldon wanted Professor Henry Corrie to destroy his invention to save
humanity. She gently reminds him that his invention will lead to the death of
hundreds of young men like her son Eddie. But he ignores her words and gloats over
his invention as well as the fame and wealth. He says that he will sell his bomb to the
government which grants him the highest amount of money. When Mrs. Meldon is
convinced that her brother will not suppress his invention at any cost, she decides
to do away with him along with his invention.

xxiii. ‘The Count of Monte Cristo planned his revenge intelligently.’ Comment
Ans) The Count of Monte Cristo planned his revenge intelligently. He brought
revenge upon his enemy slowly and very deliberately, making Morcerf who made
his life miserable, suffers for a very long time. He took revenge from Morcerf
because he originally conspired against him.

xxiv. What charges were leveled against the Count of Morcerf?

Ans) Very serious charges appeared against the Count of Morcerf, whose actual
name was Fernand Mondego, in two famous newspapers of Paris which led to his
disgrace and downfall.
These charges stated that in the year 1823, when the Count of Morcerf was a captain
in the French army, he had arranged the surrender of the Fortress of Yanina to the
Turks in exchange for bribes. These charges were published by an unknown person,
who later on dawned to Albert, was his own best and family friend, the Count of
Monte Cristo. The Count of Monte Cristo proved it by producing authentic
documentary proofs through a lady witness sent in the Chamber of Deputies with
signed, sealed and witnessed documents and hence took his revenge by proving the
Count of Morcerf a traitor.

xxv. Why could Monte Cristo not marry Mercedes?

Ans) Edmond Dantes could not marry Mercedes because he had become the victim
of Fernand Mondego’s devilish plot. The latter had also fallen in love with Mercedes
and falsely proved with the help of his friends that young sailor Edmond Dantes was
a spy to the exiled French King Napoleon Bonaparte. Hence, Edmond Dantes
was found guilty of spying and was condemned to pass the rest of his life in an
underground dungeon. On the other hand, Fernand Mondego had made Mercedes
believe that Edmond had died during his imprisonment and convinced her to marry
him.

Subject: Water Crisis

Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the
authorities concerning Water Crisis in Karachi.
Water is the most vital source of survival but unfortunately, Pakistan is ranked in the top
ten countries which are facing water shortage. It is estimated that 21 million people are
deprived of clean water and numerous die drinking dirty water, especially in rural areas.
The citizens of Karachi face water crisis and many resort to using brackish groundwater.
Access to safe, freshwater contributes to better health and helps avert the spread of
contagious diseases.
Moreover, while many affluent households can afford to buy water tankers, this puts a
strain on the finances of the average citizen. The search for safe water causes citizens to
divert their attention and time, which could better be used to pursue education or work.
Thus, the water crisis in Pakistan must be solved at the earliest. Despite many protests by
residents of Karachi, they continue to face water shortage. I hope in future the government
can formulate policies and implement them to solve the crisis.

Sincerely,

X.Y.Z

Subject: INCREASING NUMBER OF STRAY DOGS

Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the
authorities regarding the increasing number of stray dogs in large parts of the city
including my area. It has become infested with stray dogs, many of which will
become rabid.

A number of stray dogs can also be seen in parks and playgrounds, complaints of dogs
roaming on roads and streets have been received from most localities of Karachi. People
outside their houses suffer the most, as stray dogs not only keep on barking, but in some
cases rush towards them, forcing them to literally run to protect themselves.

The increasing number of stray dogs can be reduced if the Government can transfer these
animals to numerous animal shelters around the city; also these dogs could even be put to
good service. By training these canines as security dogs or helpers for the visually impaired,
we will not only help the disabled and provide security to local communities but we also
make sure these animals get a better life and not the fate of dying at the hands of poison.

I hope that the government would take preventive measures regarding the above
mentioned issue.

Sincerely,

X.Y.Z

Subject: RISING STREET CRIMES

Sir,

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the
authorities regarding the increase in street crimes.
Street crimes in Karachi are once again on the rise after months of hibernation. People are
again threatened by the gangs out on bikes.
They are being robbed of their valuables round the clock. Criminals are roaming the streets
freely, in search of targets.
The residential areas are no longer safe against crime. According to the Citizens-Police
Liaison Committee’s recent report, an increase in cases of mugging has been recorded.
Criminal activities are reported to have grown like a disease in Karachi, threatening the life
and property of people. The law-enforcement agencies should take decisive action to uproot
criminal activities from the city, so people may feel safe again.
I hope that the concerned department would take preventive measures regarding the above
mentioned issue.

Sincerely,

X.Y.Z

xxx. Story Writing:

Unity is Strength
Once upon a time three sons were engaged in merchantile business under the supervision
of their father. They were very rich. Each son was proficient in his own department.
If one was good in sales, the other one was competent in purchases and similarly the third
one in finance.
Unluckily, one day the father got bed ridden and the sons decided to divide the business
under the fallacy that each of them was experts in their own way and can handle their
individual business solely.
The father was glum and grumpy with their decision but was helpless and unfortunately the
division took place.
As a result three of them became each other's competitors. With the passage of time, they
started having huge losses in their respective businesses. They tried all possible ways
to succeed but the situation became worse.
Then they came to their father for a piece of advice. The father said "when you all were
doing the business jointly, the business ran successfully. But it was not any one of you
responsible for the success of the business rather traits of all three of you put together
made the business successful".
The sons realized their mistake & got reunited. So we conclude that disunity always ruins.
Where there is a will there is a way
He was a young boy who lived with his elderly Mother. His mother wanted him to learn how
to play the piano because she longed to hear her son play for her. She sent her son to a
piano teacher who took Robby under her guidance.
However, there was one small problem because Robby was not musically inclined, therefore
was very slow in learning.
The teacher did not have much faith in the boy because of his weakness. The mother was
enthusiastic and every week she would send Robby to the teacher.
One day Robby stopped attending the piano lessons. The teacher thought that he had given
up and in fact she was quite pleased since she did not give much hope to Robby. Not long
after, the piano teacher was given the task to organize a piano concert in town. She sent out
circulars to invite the students and public to attend the event.
Suddenly, she received a call from Robby who offered to take part in the concert. The
teacher told Robby that he was not good enough and that he was no longer a student since
he had stopped coming for lessons.
Robby begged her to give him a chance and promised that he would not let her down.
Finally, she gave in and she put him to play last, hoping that he will change his mind at the
last minute. When the big day came, the hall was packed and the children gave their best
performance. Finally, it was Robby's turn to play and as his name was announced, he
walked in. He was not in proper attire and his hair was not properly groomed.
The teacher was really nervous since Robby's performance could spoil the whole evening's
brilliant performance.
As Robby started playing the crowd became silent and was amazed at the skill of this little
boy. In fact, he gave the best performance of the evening. At the end of his presentation the
crowd and the piano teacher gave him a standing ovation. The crowd asked Robby how he
managed to play so brilliantly.
With a microphone in front of him, he said, "I was not able to attend the weekly piano
lessons as there was no one to send me because my Mother was sick with cancer.
She just passed away this morning and I wanted her to hear me play. You see, this is the first
time she is able to hear me play because when she was alive she was deaf and now I know
she is listening to me. I had to play my best for her!" The moral of the story is when you
have a passion and a reason to do something, you will surely excel.
You may not be talented or gifted but if you have a strong will to do something, you will be
able to bring out the best in it.

One Good Turn Deserves Another:

Once a swarm of bees had put up their hive in a tree that stood on the bank of a river. They
remained busy collecting honey all the day. One day a bee felt thirsty and went to the river.
As it tried to drink water, the water carried it away and it was about to drown.

Fortunately, a dove was sitting on the branch of a tree.

She saw the bee in trouble and immediately went for it's rescue. She plucked a broad leaf
from the tree, flew to the bee and dropped the leaf near it. The bee mounted the leaf, dried
its wings and flew away to safety.

After few days, the dove was caught in big danger. She was sitting on the branch of a tree
when an archer aimed at. She thought of flying away but a hawk was hovering above her
head. She could see her death nearby.

Luckily, the bee came there. Seeing the dove in danger, it stung the hunters. The arrow went
off but missed its aim and hit the hawk instead and killed it. Thus, the dove was saved from
death.
A stitch in time saves nine
Once upon a time a merchant earned a large sum of money by selling his goods. He had to go
a long way to reach home. He went to an inn to get his horse. The stable man brought out
his horse and said, “Sir, your horse has lost a shoe nail. You better wait and have it put in.”
The merchant said, “Sorry! I have no time now. Moreover, one nail more or less in shoe does
not matter much.” Saying so, he got on his horse and galloped it towards his destination.

After some time, another nail from the shoe of the horse came off. The horse began to limp.
Being in a hurry, the merchant did not stop to repair the damage. After some time, the horse
began to stagger. Very soon the sunset and darkness prevailed everywhere. This further
decreased the speed of the horse.
The darkness was falling. He was getting late. At last he got down and led the horse. In the
meantime, a gang of robbers appeared from the forest. The merchant could not speed away
his horse and save his money. He was at the mercy of the looters. They thrashed him
thoroughly and snatched his money. The merchant returned home with a lame horse and
empty pocket. His carelessness had cost a heavy price.

i. PSL Cricket Match

Pakistan Super League 2019 was the fourth season of the Pakistan Super League, one of the
matches was played between Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans at Abu Dhabi. Karachi Kings
won the toss and opted to bowl first. Multan Sultans were restricted to 118 runs for seven
wickets by Kings. Chasing a target of 119, Ahmed Shahzad and Livingstone's tremendous
performances helped Karachi Kings win the match. The five-wicket loss in the must-win
match against Karachi Kings had virtually knocked out Multan Sultans from the playoff
stage of the game. Sultans, led by Shoaib Malik, managed to win two games off nine played
matches. Multan Sultans' batting lineup once again failed to produce desired results as the
team managed to score only 118 runs. While Livingstone's half-century off 42 balls took
Karachi Kings to victory. Fast bowler Usman Khan Shinwari picked four wickets while
spinner Umar Khan bagged three.

ii. Importance of Education in Pakistan

Education is almost necessary in today’s highly competitive world. When it comes to
countries like Pakistan, it is almost impossible to survive without proper schooling.
Education is not just about getting a degree or a piece of paper, education is about respect,
dignity and self-confidence. Our nation needs education more than anything in this world
which can only come when the thought process of people will change and that can be
possible through proper education. It is the basic right of every child and a very important
aspect for progress of any nation. Schooling plays the role of a foundation for any child and
if the foundation is solid, the child will become a strong and confident human being. If a
country wants to grow and lessen poverty, providing education to every single person is the
only key to success. Most of our talent is wasted every year because majority of the people
don’t have the resources to continue higher studies resulting in low self-esteem, depression
and anxiety. The education ministry of Pakistan needs to take firm actions on this matter
and should start providing more and more opportunities to educate its citizens. Education
is the most important investment that we can make for a better future.

iii. Importance of Dams in Pakistan

Dams are important because they provide water for domestic, industrial and irrigation
purposes. Dams often also provide hydroelectric power and river navigation. Domestic use
includes everyday activities such as water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, and lawn
and garden watering. Dams and their reservoirs provide recreation areas for fishing and
boating. They help people by reducing or preventing floods. During times of excess water
flow, dams store water in the reservoir; then they release water during times of low flow,
when natural flows are inadequate to meet water demand. Despite spending millions on
development projects like metro bus and motorways, the country still lags behind in
assuring the most basic human need; water. There aren’t enough dams in Pakistan; in fact
the only major dams built are Mangla and Tarbela. The Indus river system authority has
reported that the country wastes about 21 billion dollars’ worth of water every year just
because there aren’t enough proper storage facilities. It has recommended that considering
the current situation of Pakistan, it needs about three dams the size of Mangla dam to store
this extra water. There are no arrangements to store water in monsoon days, due to which
it all ends up flooding areas and eventually into the sea. The already present dams are
decades old and due to this the silt deposits in them have reduced their ability to store
water as much as they did before. It is estimated that by the year 2025 Pakistan will lose
about 22 billion cubic meters water. There is need for long term as well as short term
strategies to overcome this major issue. Both small and large dams are therefore needed.
With a new government in control, a huge responsibility stays on their shoulder. Currently,
the biggest issue that Pakistan is facing is of the water crisis and the consequent electricity
shortage. Dams are thought to be the only solution to this and it is high time that concerned
authorities realize the sensitivity of this situation and take control as soon as possible.
