Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Nouns

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 1st grade English/Language Arts
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE1L1 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking. b. Use common, proper, and possessive nouns.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Educator Standard 7B - Use technology to design and implement a
variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback
to students and inform instruction.

Overarching Question: How do you determine the difference between common, proper, and possessive
nouns?

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://create.kahoot.it/share/types-of-nouns/e5c44876-c8a7-

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating
Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity:
I will have taught an English/Language Arts lesson on this standard the day before so we will begin by
referring to that lesson. We will review as a class what the difference between common, proper, and
possessive nouns is. As a first formative assessment, the students will come up with a few examples of each
type of noun as a class to make sure everyone is understanding and I will write them on the board as we go.
I will then say that we are going to be playing a Kahoot! today to assess everyone’s knowledge about
common, proper, and possessive nouns. I will briefly explain how Kahoot! works as they have already utilized
this as a class before. They will all be directed to get their devices out to log in to the game.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will use their personal device or a classroom computer to log onto Kahoot.it and enter the game
code to join our game. I will be walking around to assist any students who need help getting to the website
and logging in. Once everyone is ready I will remind them how to play by explaining that they will be read the
question and then they pick the color on their device that corresponds to the correct answer choice on the
board. I will remind them that even though they get more points for being the fastest, they need to take their
time and really read the questions and answer correctly because this will be for a grade. We will then begin.
The Kahoot! is self-paced so I will observe and engage with the students as they play and be available if any
technical difficulties arise.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10). If you
cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a question or two you
would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your Bloom’s terms to design the
question(s): If I were to buy the advanced version of Kahoot! For my classroom I would also include these
open ended response questions to encourage critical thinking.
Identify which of these nouns are common and which are proper by categorizing them by type: wind, Ms.
Williams, Mt. Rushmore, desk, elementary school, Atlanta, iPad
Analyze what makes a common noun different from a proper noun.

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? After each question on a Kahoot! it shows you the amount selected for each answer choice
so I will pay attention to whichever questions stumped the most amount of students and we will review them
at the end to make sure everyone understands how to identify the different nouns.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used?
The data from the Kahoot! with each child’s correct and incorrect answers will be collected and used as a
summative assessment. The students will receive a grade based on their participation and the percentage of
correct answers they had. This data will also be used to inform my next lesson on this standard. If many
students are still not meeting the standard, I will do another in depth lesson on nouns, but if I find that most if
not all of the students display proficiency then we will move on and only do a review later.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I have not used a SR tool before so this is something new to me. I am anxious to see how the students
respond to it. I know they will be excited about using devices and the fact that it is a game with a winner at
the end, but I am not sure if they will take it as seriously as I would like or if being on their devices will be a
distraction for them. I hope it goes well and this is something I can utilize again in the future.
Reflective Practice:
I think using this SR tool will impact student learning in a great way! This is a great tool to use to engage
students and keep their energy up while assessing them at the same time.
