VeSys Test Drive

By the end of this Test Drive, you will have designed a multi-sheet wiring design and a
related harness diagram for a simple driver-side door harness (of a two-door car)
similar to the picture below.

2 VeSys Test Drive

Referring to the picture, above, the entry/exit of wires into the driver door is via the
green connector. The rest of the harness hooks up to four switches assembled into
the driver armrest. These are a courtesy lamp switch, a switch for the driver to
lock/unlock the driver door, a switch for the driver to lock/unlock the passenger door,
and a switch for the driver to lockout passenger control of the passenger door.

Also included are additional parts such as three splices, two tapes, one bundle-
protection tube, one grommet, and one clip.

Introduction to VeSys Test Drive

Start > All Programs > VeSys > VeSys

VeSys tab > Project > Open > Quick Start – VeSys> VeSys Testdrive > OK.

Select Analysis Example > right-click > Expand All > double-click Diagram1

VeSys Test Drive 3

In the Design tab (lower-left), expand Devices. Click some of the devices to see them
cross-highlight in the diagram window on the right.

Click Symbols tab, expand Quick Start – Electrical, Acoustic Devices, and Batteries.
Select a device to see its symbol.

The following describes simple manipulations of the diagram window:

Pan using the horizontal and vertical scroll bars. You can also pan using the left
mouse button – hold it down for 2 seconds in the diagram window then drag the
diagram. Use the scroll wheel (MMB - middle mouse button) to zoom in and zoom out.
Or use the buttons on the ribbon.

Mouse strokes:

To zoom into an object or an area, press and drag MMB with a top-left-to-bottom-right
action over the object or area, and release MMB.

To zoom all, press and drag MMB with a diagonal bottom-right-to-top-left action, and
release.

To zoom in one step (incremental), press and drag MMB with a diagonal top-right-to-
bottom-left action, and release.

To zoom out one step (incremental), press and drag MMB with a diagonal bottom-left-
to-top-right action, and release.

Spring zoom-out: Zoom in or out to any zoom state, and get a sense of the objects

you can see in this state. Over an object or an area, with a diagonal top-left-to-bottom-
right action, press and drag MMB, press and hold Ctrl while releasing MMB. Zoom in
occurs. Release Ctrl, and zoom out will occur to the state before zoom in. If you
prefer, press Ctrl just before you press and drag MMB.

Within the context of a diagram, pressing the Ctrl key, mouse-scroll zoom or scroll-bar
pan or even do combinations thereof, release the Ctrl key, and you are back to your
original state!

VeSys tab > Project > Close Project

Creating a project and wiring diagram

VeSys tab > New Project > call it TestDrive (for example) > OK.

In the New Wiring Design dialog:

- at the top, for the design Name, name it Wiring

- at the bottom, for the diagram Name, name it Sheet 1

> OK.

Let’s position devices to draw a simple Courtesy Lamp circuit.

Select the Symbols tab, open Quick Start – Electrical. Open Batteries, double-click
single-cell, move the cursor into the diagram area and click to place, as shown in the
picture above. Notice the top corner of the grey border to get an idea of where to place
the symbols. Zoom in (mouse middle wheel) until you can just see the minor grid
points. Similarly, open Switches – Other and place “switch – single” such that you
have 3 major grid spaces (15 minor grid spaces) between the two objects. Open
Visual Indicators and place lamp 3 major grid spaces to the right of the switch. Finally
open Grounds, and place two instances of chassis.

From Drawing tab > Route, all options should be unchecked. Notice your default
cursor shape is an “arrow”

VeSys Test Drive 5

Home tab > Wire (notice the cursor change) > click the pin on the left ground (notice
the grey circle that appears, confirming the pin), move the cursor upward, click to
place an inflection point, then move the cursor across to the battery pin and terminate
the wire by double-clicking on pin NEG of the BATTERY.

The diamond shape of the pin has disappeared, indicating a wire is connected to it.
The cursor has returned to the default shape.

Now add more wires to connect the other devices. Another way to add a wire is to use
the hotkey W. After routing a wire, to remain in the Add mode, also known as Auto-
Repeat, press Shift then press the Wire action. The same principle applies to other
objects as well. When done, press Esc to exit the Auto-Repeat mode).

The default names are not meaningful, so click Design tab, and open Devices. Ignore
the two ground devices.

Select the device that has the battery symbol > right-click > Properties > give it the
name BATTERY. Notice that when you click a device in the Design browser, the
object is highlighted in the diagram window.

Select the device that has the switch symbol > right-click > Properties > give it the
name DR_COURTESY_SW. Hint – ensure you name all these parts exactly as
specified – there are many more parts to be created yet and you may get badly
confused if you take any shortcuts with names in this Test Drive.

Change the lamp’s name with a different method: double click on the name in the
drawing - give it the name COURTESY_LAMP and hit the “Enter” key to close the
popup.

When done, you should have something like this:

Validating the wiring using electrical analysis

In the Devices folder, each of the five device icons has a small orange graphic at its
lower-right. This indicates the object is analysis-ready.

Click the Analysis tab, and start the Background Simulation.

6 VeSys Test Drive

After a few seconds the simulation will start, and the circuit turns cyan in color. Hover
the cursor over the switch symbol (not its name), and in the tooltip that pops up, check
the “closed” checkbox. Notice the circuit turns green indicating the active objects.
Hover the cursor over the switch symbol again and simulate a “Switch stuck closed”
failure. Uncheck the switch failure. Hover over the lamp and notice the minimal
content of the tooltip.

Next, select Numeric Simulation and restart simulation.

Hover over the lamp symbol again. This time, notice the additional information
provided. Press the Disable Simulation button, and click the Symbols tab.

Adding components
Now we’ll add more devices from the Symbols tab.

Expand Rotating Machines and Double-click “motor – 2 direction” symbol, press the F
key to flip the symbol attached to the cursor till it orients as in the picture above, then

VeSys Test Drive 7

place a second instance below the first.

Double-click the name of the upper instance symbol. In the Name field, enter
DR_DOORLOCK.

Double-click the name of the lower instance. In the Name field, enter
PS_DOORLOCK.

Add a ground to each of the door locks symbols as shown above and connect with
wires.

From the Switches – Other folder, double-click switch - 2 pole rocker. Place and name
it DR_DOORLOCK_SW. Then route wires to it as shown above. Notice the creation of
a splice SP1 when terminating a wire on another wire (Name it SP1 if it has another
name).

Place the second instance of switch – 2pole rocker with its pins overlapping Pins 1
and 2 of the PS_DOORLOCK device as shown above.

Name the switch DR_DOORLOCK_PS_SW. Select it > right-click > Connect > By
Wire.

As shown in the picture above, drag the switch away and place it under the
DR_DOORLOCK_SW. The Connect By Wire action automatically created wires. This
is especially useful if a large number of pins on one device need to be connected to
pins on another device.

Press LMB (Left Mouse Button) and drag over the two wires. Only those two objects
should be highlighted red. Right-click > Route Selected. Route a wire from pin 2 and
join it to the corresponding wire on DR_DOORLOCK_SW. Notice a splice is created.
Name it SP2. When done, you should see something like in the picture below.

8 VeSys Test Drive

On the Drawing tab, select the Add Rectangle action. Create two rectangle as shown
in the picture below – notice the “hints” at the bottom left of the VeSys application
window. Click the dropdown again, select Add Text, drag out a rectangle. Enter Driver
Armrest for the upper text, and Passenger Armrest for the lower text.

VeSys Test Drive 9

Add the two lower switches, remembering to press shift-R when adding the upper one
to rotate it. Name the three pin switch in the passenger armrest as
PS_DOORLOCK_SW, and name the two pin switch in the driver armrest as
DR_LOCKOUT _SW.

10 VeSys Test Drive

Draw a wire to power the lockout switch first. It will create a splice with a default name.
Name it SP3. Add the other three new wires as shown Notice that two more splices
are created.

Home tab > Save

Adding connectors
(Caution: The insertion of inlines across wires requires special attention and practice.
We strongly recommend you try out the steps to create an inline pair in free, white
space. Also, remember, you can always Undo with Ctrl-Z)

On the Home tab, select Connector > Inline. Notice the cursor. Read the prompt at the
bottom of the application window. Click once, drag the cursor downward and to the
right a couple of grid spaces. Observe the graphics and the arrows, and read the
tooltip. Click a second time. This instances the receptacle-side of the inline. Drag a
couple of spaces to the right, read the tooltip, then click the third time. The receptacle-
side is a rectangle, the plug-side has arcs at two corners.

Notice, the default inline pair stacking is horizontal.

Press LMB and drag across the inline pair > Delete.

VeSys Test Drive 11

You can also try testing the inserting of an inline across a vertical wire. Since the inline
pair stacking will need to be vertical, be sure to press the R key.

Delete any test objects that you have just created.

We’ll begin with the real thing now.

Add an inline as in the picture above. The receptacle on the outside; the plug on the
inside. Hint, work from top-left to bottom-right, then right. Be sure to name the plug-
side as C_IL1.

Expand C_IL1 in the Design browser – in the Inlines folder - and notice it has one pin.

We will now place the inline connector C_IL1 across another wire. From the Design
tab, double-click the C_IL1 connector icon (not the pin icons) > OK > Instance it on the
wire between the COURTESY_LAMP and the DR_COURTESY_SW as in the picture
below. Hint – work from top-right to bottom-left, then left.

Notice the overlapping text - we’ll tidy it up later. Also notice that the graphics of C_IL1
in the second picture above has been replaced in the picture above with a zigzag
edge at the bottom, indicating this connector is fragmented and there will be other
fragments elsewhere. Notice from the design browser that C_IL1 now has two pins.

12 VeSys Test Drive

In the design browser, double-click C_IL1 connector (not its pins) > OK > and place
the inline over the output wires from DR_DOORLOCK_SW and
DR_DOORLOCK_PS_SW. The picture above shows the result.

Finally, we will place the inline C_IL1 over the vertical segment of the wire between
DR_LOOKOUT_SW and PS_DOORLOCK_SW. Hint: make the first click on the wire,
then press R to rotate the connector, then two more clicks to define the jack and plug.
Create the receptacle on the outside of the rectangular boundary, and the plug on the
inside, as in the picture below.

VeSys Test Drive 13

Home tab > Save

We will now hide the text that we do not need to see for this Test Drive.

In the design browser, right-click the Inlines folder > Expand All.

Select any pin > press Shift key > then, in the diagram area, press and drag LMB
across the entire set of objects > notice all the pins are selected in the browser > right-
click > Properties > uncheck the “Visible” icon (a small square box on the right hand
side of the “Name” field) > OK. The pin names are hidden.

In the design browser, select only the receptacle J1 (for example; you might have a
different name, but it will start with J) > right-click > Properties > uncheck Visible > OK.
The name of the receptacle-side of the inline will be hidden.

In the design browser, collapse the plug and the receptacle, so that you can see only
C_IL1 and (for example) J1. Ctrl-select both of them > right-click > Hide Cross-
reference Text.

This should have made the diagram easier to understand.

14 VeSys Test Drive

Next, we will add plug connectors to a switch in the Driver Armrest.

Zoom in close to DR_DOORLOCK_SW. Select Home tab > Connector > Plug.

Select the edge of the switch above the wire (top left), and expand it to below both
wires, one grid space away (bottom right).

Notice that the two wires are now pulled away from the switch and terminate on the
plug.

We need to add the same connector, P2 (for example), to pin 2 on the other side of
the switch symbol. From the design browser, under Connectors, double-click the
connector P2 (for example) > OK > select the left edge of the switch above the wire >
move the cursor down and left below the wire and click again.

We will tidy-up the text later.

Similarly, add plug connectors to the other three switches in the Driver Armrest only.
One of the connectors is vertically oriented, so you will need to press the R key to
rotate the plug as you instance it on either side of the switch.

When done, you will have four plug connectors in the connectors folder with default
names. Select the Connectors folder > right-click > Expand All. As before, select any

VeSys Test Drive 15

one pin > press Shift key > in the diagram area, press and drag LMB across the entire
set of objects > notice all the pins are selected in the browser > right-click > Properties
> uncheck Visible > OK.

Collapse each connector, so you see only four connector name entries in the folder.
Ctrl-select all four > right-click > Hide Cross-reference Text.

Name each of the connectors as follows: Name each connector as the switch it
connects to, and prefix it with a C_ so we know it’s a connector, such as:

C_DR_COURTESY_SW, C_DR_DOORLOCK_SW, C_DR_DOORLOCK_PS_SW,

C_DR_LOCKOUT_SW.

We could leave the names visible, but they needlessly clutters the diagram. We added
a prefix C_ so we know it is a connector (and can later identify them in the harness
design). The rest of the connector name helps us know the device it hooks up to.

Select all four connectors, and hide their names.

Home tab > Save

Tagging the connectors and wiring

There are 3 splices inside the Driver Armrest, 2 outside. Be sure to name those on the
inside as SP1, SP2, SP3 starting from the top and progressing downwards. Give a
temporary name if you need to while swapping the splice names.

There are seven wires that connect to these 3 splices. Name each one with a numeral
1 through 7.

In the design browser, Shift-select the wires named with a numeral > right-click >
Properties > General tab > in the Specification section at the top, use the drop-down
selector for Color, and select B:Black > OK.

Name the six remaining wires inside the Driver Armrest with an letter, A through F.

For the wires that are named with an alphabet, give them the color R.

You should have a diagram that looks something like this:

16 VeSys Test Drive

We will now assign a Harness Attribute value (= DOOR-DR) for all the objects that will
belong to the driver door harness.

Zoom out till you can see the Driver Armrest rectangle.

In the design browser, expand the Conductors folder > select wire 1, press Shift,
select wire F > release Shift and press Ctrl; then from the Connectors folder select the
four connectors; then from the Inlines folder select only C_IL1; finally from the Splices
folder select SP1, 2, 3. You can release the Ctrl key now.

Now, right-click in white space > Edit Harness Attribute > enter DOOR-DR > OK. The
objects are still selected.

The highlighted objects within the rectangular area will be part of the DOOR-DR
harness. The three unselected switches do not belong to the harness; they are

VeSys Test Drive 17

assembled into the driver armrest.

Home tab > Save

Creating a harness diagram

Now launch VeSys Harness and open our TestDrive project.

In the top-left project browser panel, select TestDrive > right-click > New Harness
Design.

In the dialog that opens up:

Name: leave it as default; we will change it later, and see why.

Part Number: 12-345 > OK.

We know we want to have a main bundle attached to the connector C_IL1 at one end.
Wires enter/exit the driver door via this inline.

To add a bundle use Ctrl-B, or Home tab > Bundle.

Place the first click somewhere in the middle of the diagram area, then move the
mouse to the right. As you do, the length updates (zoom in with the scroll wheel if you
can’t see the text). When it is about 300, double-click to place.

Home tab > Create Connector.

Click the left node (N1 for example). In the dialog, give it a name C_IL1 (this is what
we called our harness inline in the Wiring Design). In the Attributes list, for Number of
Cavities, enter 10 (because we plan to use a 10-pin connector). OK. Zoom out to see
a default symbol, and an empty default cavity table.

Caution - do not do File > Save. We’ll see why shortly. Keep in mind this is the
harness design.

At this point, we want to add part numbers to the connectors in the wiring diagram,
and then synchronize them over to the harness diagram. Because we will assign the
part numbers in VeSys Design, during synchronization, VeSys Harness will pick up
the symbols for those parts automatically.

Switch to the Wiring design > right-click C_IL1 > Properties - press the […] icon on the
right of the “Library Part” field > press the search icon at the top-right > select the 10
WAY GREEN connector (C-71849) > Insert > OK > OK. Notice an orange check mark
in the design browser. This indicates a library part has been assigned.

18 VeSys Test Drive

Both the *DOORLOCK* switches in the Connectors folder are of 3 pins so select them
and insert (as above) the part whose Description is 3 WAY BLUE (C-71483) (press
OK in any dialog you see).

For the remaining two connectors in the Connectors folder, you’ll use a different
approach. Let’s say you want to add a part you already know of, say C-71332. Ctrl-
select the two connectors > right-click > Properties - type C- in the fill-in field for
“Library Part”, As you type the next characters, notice the list filters down. Select C-
71332 > Insert > and OK three times.

Do not do File > Save. We’ll see why shortly. Keep in mind this is the wiring design.

Switch to the Harness design by selecting its tab. Notice C_IL1 has a default symbol.

In the project browser, right-click the Wiring Design > Synchronize.

OK the warning message. Home tab > Save. You just saved the harness design.

Right-click the Wiring design again > Synchronize.

OK the warning message > Switch to the wiring design > Home tab > Save. Close
design by clicking “x” on its tab.

Right-click the Wiring design > Synchronize > problem

OK > Right-click HarnessDesign1:12-345 > Edit > change name to DOOR-DR. Recall,
this is the value of the Harness Attribute that we gave to the objects in the Driver
Armrest which we want to belong to the harness.

Before you can synchronize the wiring design must always be saved and closed, and

VeSys Test Drive 19

the harness design must be saved and its diagram displayed. The system generates
error messages informing you of any problems if you forget these requirements.

The only objects you currently see are a connector, its empty cavity table, and a
bundle. Right-click Wiring design > Synchronize > Synchronize > Close. Notice the
new connectors, splices and a wire table at the top-right.

Refining the harness layout

Notice the C_IL1 cavity table is now populated. Expand the folders Connectors,
Splices and Wires. Notice four connectors and three splices are placed by default in
the middle of the diagram.

Reposition the four connectors by selecting its node (black filled circle) and dragging
to the new position, as show below.

20 VeSys Test Drive

Draw three bundles (static or dynamic), from the right-side node of the main bundle to
a connector node on the three connectors on the right. If you choose Static bundle
creation, press Enter to accept the length.

Draw a bundle vertically from the upper-left connector C_DR_COURTESY_SW and

double-click to end it on the horizontal bundle.

OK the Node Position Utility, and press Enter to OK the length shown in the fill-in field
at the top-right corner.

The default bundle style appears too thick. To reduce it, Home tab > Styles > expand
Harness > expand Bundle > select Graphics > set the Thickness to 1 > OK.

Do Crtl-A, Shift-A to update the styles. Much better!

VeSys Test Drive 21

One at a time, select a splice from the Harness Design browser > right-click > Move >
place on the bundle as shown above. Your dimensions may vary from those shown.
OK the Node Position Utility.

Your harness should look something like this:

Home tab > Save

Restructure the wiring design

In project browser, select the Wiring design (not the diagram) > right-click > New
Diagram > for Name enter DoorLocks > OK.

22 VeSys Test Drive

Right-click the original diagram DoorLock > Edit > rename it to Power&Courtesy.
Double-click to open it.

Press and drag LMB, from the upper-right, in-between the DR_DOORLOCK device
and the COURTESY_LAMP ground down to the bottom-left, just below the Passenger
Armrest text.

Right-click > Move To > DoorLocks is selected > OK.

Click in white space to un-highlight.

Notice that this diagram has no BATTERY power so we need to share the top-vertical
wire (named 3 in the picture above) into the Power&Courtesy diagram. Make a note of
the wire name.

Switch to Power&Courtesy. Expand the Conductors folder. If it does not list wire 3, it is
because only objects in the active diagram are listed. The listing can be toggled to
show all objects from all diagrams using the icon just to the right of the magnifying
glass search icon at the bottom of the application window.

Double-click the wire you made a note of earlier, let’s say 3.

VeSys Test Drive 23

Route it from SP1 to about 10 grid spaces below it. Select the middle of the wire, drag
downwards a bit, and release. If the wire is disconnected from SP1, zoom in close to
the upper end, move the cursor over where the double arrow-head touches the
vertical segment (shown with red arrow). When the cursor changes to a line with
arrows at each end, LMB and drag it onto SP1. Notice the cross-reference on the two
diagrams.

Select the 13 wires name 1-7, A-F, > Properties > General tab > in the Specification
section at the top - for Material select TWC, for Spec select 16/.2 > OK.

Home tab > Save. Close Power&Courtesy only.

In the DoorLocks diagram, select the two wires on the output of the connector for
switch DR_DOORLOCK_SW, say B, and C. Home tab > Multicore.

In the dialog, press the green “plus” icon above the right hand panel, select “oval”,
uncheck Default Name, enter the name MC1 > OK . Then press the green arrow icon
located between the two panels to move the wires you select to the right panel.

Press the green “plus” icon again, “oval” should be selected. Uncheck Default Name
box > enter the name MC2 > OK. Next, from the Available Conductors panel on the
left, Ctrl-select the names of the two wires on the output of the connector for switch
DR_DOORLOCK_PS_SW, say D, E > press the green arrow icon located between
the two panels > OK.

Notice the four wires are no longer in the Conductors folder. Expand the Multicores
folder > Expand each multicore. The wires are in the multicore.

Select the two oval elements displaying the name of the multicore as shown > right-
click > Edit Harness Attribute > enter DOOR-DR > OK.

24 VeSys Test Drive

Select the first wire in MC1 (wire B) > right-click > Properties > change the color to G.
Select the first wire of MC2 (D), and change color to G.

Select the second wire of MC1 (C) and change the color to P. Do the same for the
second wire of MC2 (E).

Home tab > Save.

To view design reports, Workflow > Reports > select report Configured Wire List>
View Report > press X in upper-right corner to close. Cancel when done.

Close the DoorLocks diagram.

Only DOOR-DR harness design should be open. Zoom All, then press and drag MMB
over the wire table at the top-right of the border, the release. The wire table zooms
into view. Notice that the Spec, and Size columns are empty.

Right-click the Wiring design > Synchronize > Synchronize > Close.

Notice the Spec and Size columns got updated. And notice the two multicores listed.

Engineering the harness design

Zoom All, then Zoom Area over the harness graphics portion.

Home tab > Insulation > double-click the bundle going to C_DR_DOORLOCKS_SW >
in the dialog, enter a name Spiral Tape1 > press the New button. From the Insulation
Type dropdown, select Spiral Tape > assign the Library Part TA-57741 > for Distance
Between Items In Percentage, enter 150 > OK > OK. To change the color: Select the
graphic for the insulation > right-click > Override Styling > Edit Graphic Style > select a
color > OK.

Home tab > Insulation > double-click the bundle going to

C_DR_DOORLOCKS_PS_SW > in the dialog, enter a name OverlapTape2 > press
the New button > from the Insulation Type dropdown, select Overlap Tape > assign
the Library Part TA-57751 > for Distance Between Items In Percentage, enter 90 > OK
> OK. Change the color, if you prefer.

Zoom Out so you see the entire horizontal bundle.

Home tab > Insulation > Start & End > read the prompt at the bottom-left > select the
start node at C_IL1 > select the end node at the extreme right of the horizontal bundle
where three meet at node N2 > the horizontal bundle highlights > read the prompt -
sometimes you need to specify through nodes when there is more than one path; we
don’t need to bother in this example - so press Enter to display the specification
dialog. For Name, enter Tube1 > press New > select Fixed Tube from the dropdown,
and assign Library Part TU-45388 > OK > OK. Change the color, if you prefer.

VeSys Test Drive 25

Expand folder Insulations > Continuous, and see the contents.

Let’s add, slightly differently, a grommet whose part number we know starts with “Gr”.
In the design window, click the Parts tab. In the field next to the Internal dropdown,
enter Gr. Select the part number that gets displayed, and it will populate the Parts
panel. Right-click the entry, Create Grommet > select a point on the bundle between
C_IL1 and SP1 > OK the Node Utility > in the Add Grommet dialog, enter name
Grommet 1 > OK. Notice the default symbol.

Let’s add a clip. Delete the grommet part number from the fill-in field in the Parts tab >
enter Cl > select Cl-1535. It will populate the Parts panel. Right-click > Create Clip >
select a point on the bundle between SP2 and SP3 > OK the Node Utility > in the Add
Clip dialog, enter name Clip 11 > OK. Notice the default symbol.

26 VeSys Test Drive

Home tab > Save.

Zoom into the wire table, notice the Part No., and Length column are empty.

From the Automate tab > Calculate > Wire/Multicore Lengths. Notice the Length
column updates.

In the design browser, expand the Wires and Multicores folders, and expand the two
multicores. There is no orange check mark, meaning that no part is assigned yet.

From the Automate > Part Select > Wire P/Ns. Notice all the wires got assigned a part;
shown in the table. Wires belonging to multicores did not get a part assigned.

Right-select MC1 in the design browser > Multicores

Select MC1 in the dialog > click on the yellow pencil icon (top right) to edit > press the
