THE COMBINED SYLLABLES OF HIRAGANA (use the chart on page 29)
Now that you know all the syllables, you know that there is no such syllable as kyo in hiragana. So
you need to learn how to form this and other similar sounds so you can write words such as
TOKYO and KYOTO. Some Japanese words have sounds that are made by joining two sounds
together. You can write these sounds in hiragana by combining や, ゆ, and よ with the hiragana
listed below. When you write these combinations you must always write や、 ゆ or よ smaller than
the character with which they are combined. Practise writing them in the boxes below.

Omamori are small Japanese charms or amulets that are usually sold at temples and shrines.
Dedicated to specific Shinto gods or Buddhist figures, each charm is said to provide specific forms
of luck or protection. Here are the main six good luck charms that people often carry with them or
give as gifts.

You will need: Patterned paper, Ribbon, Textas or coloured pencils

This charm, the kenko (けんこ), is supposed to


protect your health, to prevent you from getting
diseases, and help you to live a long life.

This amulet, called the shobai-hanjo (しょばいーはんじょ), is said to provide good luck and
good fortune in your business, whether you're an individual or a company.

This charm, called the en-musubi (えんーむすび) is supposed to bring you good fortune with
romance, love, and eventually marriage. This amulet is said to help single people find their
soulmate.

This charm, called the gakugyo-joju (がくぎょーじょじゅ), is supposed to bring good


luck for students in their education, and also for people in their general acquisition of
knowledge. It's popular for students to carry this amulet as they prepare for their exams.

This amulet, the kotsu-anzen (こつーあんぜん), is supposed to provide safe journeys for all
kinds of travelers. Originally it was meant as a traffic safety charm, but it has become a charm
for all methods of travel. All Nippon Airlines (ANA) even made a blue charm for safe air travel
because blue is the color of the airline. This one is more specifically labeled koku-anzen (航空安
全), or air travel safety.

This charm, the yaku-yoke (やくーよけ), is supposed to keep evil and disasters far away
from you.

Hanami-はなみ (Cherry-Blossom Viewing)
The arrival of cherry blossoms signals the end of chilly winter weather in Japan. The blossoms
appear first in Kyushu around the end of March and spread northward as the weather warms,
reaching Tokyo in early April and Hokkaido in mid-May. The three main weather bureaus issue
forecasts of where the "cherry-blossom front" is moving, and newspapers report the process from
first flowering to full bloom.

People celebrate the flowering of cherry blossoms by moving outdoors - holding hanami picnics
under the trees. These gatherings can be outings with family members, friends, or colleagues. At
night time, people bring along beer, sake, and even karaoke sets with them to hold cheerful, often
rowdy parties.

Cherry-blossom viewing began in ancient times when aristocrats wrote poetry and sang songs
under the flowering trees. It has been the theme of numerous literary works, dances, and
paintings. Even though modern parties aren't so refined as those of the past, people still find the
blanket of light-pink petals deeply moving.

The Japanese like cherry blossoms because the shape and color of the petals reflect people's
ideal notions of purity and simplicity. They are also touched by the blossoms that are so fragile
and short-lived, scattering just a few days after they flower. Every time there is the slightest
breeze, a shower of cherry-blossom petals is produced.

There are many sites around the country famous for their spectacular blossoms, such as parks,
temple and shrine grounds, and cherry-lined streets, and at many of them cherry-blossom festivals
are held. They are also popular hanami sites, and they tend to be very crowded while the flowers
are in bloom.

The Facts
May 5 is Children's Day, when families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of
children. It became a national holiday in 1948, but it has been a day of celebration in Japan
since ancient times.
The fifth day of the fifth month was traditionally called Tango no Sekku and was a festival
for boys. Girls have their own festival, called Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival), held on the third
day of the third month.
On Children's Day, families with boys fly huge carp-shaped streamers
(koinobori-こいのぼり) outside the house and display dolls of famous warriors and other
heroes inside. The carp was chosen because it symbolizes strength and success; according
to a Chinese legend, a carp swam upstream to become a dragon.
In recent years, as more people have moved into apartments
and smaller houses, the carp streamers have also gotten
smaller, and there are now miniature versions that are
decorated indoors.
Also on this day, families often take baths sprinkled with iris
leaves and roots. This is because the iris is thought to promote
good health and ward off evil. Rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves
and filled with sweet bean paste, called kashiwamochi-
かしわもち, are also eaten.
