    PROCEDURE

    ON

    SITZ BATH

    Definition: It is also known as a hip bath, a sitz bath involves immersion of the pelvic area in
    warm or hot water.

    Purposes:

     To relieve discomfort

     To promote wound healing by cleansing the perineum

     To increase the circulation

     To reduce inflammation

     It helps to relax local muscles


    PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT

     Assess the condition of the episiotomy site, any itching, irritation, ulcer, edema, drainage

     Assess the need and frequency of sitz bath.

     Assess whether the sitz bath should be done under ‘aseptic’ technique or clean technique (remember when there is a
    episiotomy wound the sitz bath should be done under aseptic technique

     Assess for any tare, odour scars, inflammation, excoriation and enlarged lymph nodes.

     Check the physician’s order for any specific instruction

     Assess the patient’s self ability for care.

     Assess the patient’s mental ability to follow instruction

     Check the articles available in the patient’s unit.


    PREPARATION OF THE ARTICLES:

    ARTICLES RATIONALE

     Sitz bath/Stainless Steel basin To provide sitz bath

     Aircushion To prevent the development of the burns.

     Lotion thermometer To check the water temperature

     Two bath blankets To cover the client

     Towels To wipe the perineum

     Hospital gown To place the mother in hospital gown

     Gloves To prevent the contamination

     Povidine-Iodine solution 10% To provide betadine sitz bath

     Neem paste with bowl 30gms To provide neem extract sitz bath

     Clean Perineal Pads To place in a perineal area after sitz bath.


    PREPARATION OF THE MOTHER AND ARTICLES

     Explain procedure to the mother.

     Provide privacy to the mother by screen

     Arrange all articles

     Check for the Doctors orders for any special precautions.
