Introduction:-
The novel kanthapura has been set in the village kanthapura. this village is a
remote slumbering south indian village. This village comes to light under the impact of non-
violet non- co-operation movement of Gandhiji in the ​twenties.in​ those days Gandhiji
transformed the entire nation into an army of none violent freedom fighters. Gandhiji and his
movement influence at the political the religious and the social levels.the novel kanthapura
shows how the impact of Gandhiji activated the village and how people struggled to survive in
adverse conditions like flurds famine and exploitation.
the impact of Gandhiji on villages was an impact of an ​dynamic.it​ was Gandhiji's
greatness that he product hundreds and thousands of title Gandhiji's thought out countries.
Moorthy was young. he was in college when he felt the impact of Gandhiji some walked out of
college as a ​Gandhiman.in​ fact many young man throught out the country gave up college
education and joined Gandhiji as freedom fighters.first-hand experience of Gandhiji by personal
contact.he had a vision of Gandhiji addressing a public meeting at that time joined the band of

college and come back to his village kanthapura.
Moorthy organises the Gandhi work in the village. The action of the novel is centred
around Moorthy. He forms the Congress commity in the village. he keeps in touch with the city
Congress committee. more ever he keeps the people aware of the latest happenings. in the
country throught newspapers and publicity material. It is he who called the Harikatha man. the
Harikatha man mix mixes religion with politics he likens Gandhiji to Ram,Red man to Shravan
and calls swear the three eyed. Murthy implement the Gandhian program of swards.he works
from eradication of an touchability by going from door to door even in the pariahquarters. He
explained to people the economic at charkha and Swadeshi. He encourages the women of the
village to take to charkha spinning. later he organises the women voluntary ​corts.in​ doing all
these Moorthy faces lot of resistance from the ignorant the conservative and the vested interest
but with the help of influentian people range gowada charges up the atmosphere of the village
kanthapura.
The news of Dandi March arouses the enthusiasm of the people of kanthapura. As
a result there are dharnas picketings Satyagrah in kanthapura.people including children and old
men are injured and wondered during protests. women like Ratna are beaten up and
disbonoured, but there spirit is not crushed slogans like 'Gandhi ki Jay' and 'Inquilab zindabad'
only sounds in the air. It boosts the morale of the people. many villagers courted arrest.when
Moorthy is arrested, Ratna take his place. the movement continues. there is 25 the no tax
campaign.As a result the lands turns ways And the villagers are forced to leave the village. In
this way the freedom struggle become a mass movement. In which men and women of all the
cast and crew fashions come together to lodge their protests agains the British government. The
Satyagrahis are tourtured and broken. The villagers of kanthapura seltte down in a near by
village called kashipura. some of the satyagrahis like Rangamma, rathna, Moorthy are put in jail.
But after the Gandhi Irwin pact the Satyagrahis are released. Young man like Moorthy doubt
wisdom at the truce. he prefers to follow the lead of Nehru.however, mejority the people
believes that Gandhiji can do no wrong. they accept the truce contentedly and wait for further
developments paitently.
Throught out the novel Gandhiji himself does not appear on the scene. He remains
in the background but his presence is always felt through the transformation. Is causing in
kanthapura and in every other village of India. The readers can till the charishma of Gandhiji's
personality. Kanthapura is a microcosm of the microcosm. Raja Rao has not idealised the
village life. the depiction of the movement goes along with the depiction of trivialities of village
life. even the character of Moorthy has not been idealised. the writer has presented the bright as
well as the dark sides of the Indian society at the time at freedom struggle. kanthapura novel is
not a political novel because it gives us more essential truth about the Gandhian Era Then any
book of history. it is concerned with the regeneration and resurgence of the masses of India, so
kanthapura novel is known as Gandhian epic.
