Lesson Plan in Science (Grade 9)

Time Frame: 60 minutes

I. Objectives
At the end of the period, the students must have:
1. Define ionic and covalent bonding;
2. Discuss the process of losing, gaining and sharing of electrons in forming bonds;
3. Explain the importance of chemical bonds in the formation of compounds that are
useful in the society; and
4. Create a model of compounds that exhibit ionic and covalent bonds

Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of: (1) how atoms combine with other
atoms by transferring or by sharing electrons

Learning Competency: Explain the formation of ionic and covalent bonds

A1. Activity
Anticipation Reaction Guide.
1. The teacher presents five statements and the students will agree or disagree
with the statement. They will explain a little bit their reason for agreeing or
disagreeing.

Statements
a. When atoms share electrons with each other, they exhibit covalent
bonding.

e. In every compound whether ionic or covalent, the elements always have
equal sharing of percentage composition.

A2. Analysis
1. The teacher will go back to each of the answers of the students in every
statement. The teacher points out the correct and incorrect points in the
answers.
2. After pointing the points in the answers of the students, the teacher will
present a clearer discussion of that particular part of the topic. He will use a
power point presentation to illustrate pictures and concepts.
3. The teacher will make clarifications in the answers and provide additional
input.
4. The teacher provides specific examples of the concept of ionic bonding (how
atoms gain and lose electrons), covalent bonding (how atoms share
electrons), how percentage composition is calculated.
5. The students will answer the following exercises.

Exercises A. Oral Recitation


a. Explain how CaCl2 is formed. Determine what type of bonding exists.
b. Explain how CO2 is formed. Determine what type of bonding exists.

Exercises B. Board Work


a. The teacher presents a sample product label of a talcum powder (baby
powder) and determine the main ingredient. Calculate the percentage
composition of CaCO3.
b. The students will share their thoughts about this statement: “Products with
this chemical includes face powder, eggshells, and chalk. What are the
importance of this products in our day to day life?”

A3. Abstraction
1. The teacher asks the students to summarize the following:
a. Process of Ionic Bonding
b. Process of Covalent Bonding
c. Determining Percentage composition in a compound
2. What aspects of our society illustrate the concept of losing, gaining and
sharing? How can this be applied in business? In family and romantic
relationships?

A4. Application
1. Students will create a model of a compound: 1 exhibits ionic bond and another
1 exhibits covalent bond. The compound used as example should be found in
any product used in the society, Calculate its percent composition and write a
brief descriptions about the use or importance of the products.

The output will be submitted after three days and will be graded using the
following criteria:
