A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Ed 110

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

 describe cultural relativism


 identify various scenarios that depicts cultural relativism, and
 Evaluate how cultural relativism mitigates ethnocentrism in viewing people and
societies across cultures.

II. Learning Content

Lesson: Cultural relativism

Material: Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, Video Clip, Differentiated Work/Activity Sheet

III. Procedure

A. Daily Routines

 Opening Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Checking of Attendance
 Review of past lesson
B. Motivation
 Newsfeed Poll
1. Students will pretend that they are using Facebook. (Note: Integrate
Empowerment technologies concepts such as using of social media and
netiquette).
2. Pictures will be shown in the students as if these are posts appearing in the
newsfeed.
3. Students will be asked to react to the picture by going to the “like” lane if they
like what they see and to the “dislike” lane if they do not like what they see.
4. The leader will generate insights from selected students based on which picture
git the most likes.

C. Analysis

 The students will be asked to share their thoughts on the following questions.
1. Why did you like or dislike the picture?
2. What message did you get form the picture?
3. How do you relate yourself to what is projected in the picture?

D. Lesson Proper

1. The teacher will introduce the following concepts using the introductory
activity as reference:

a. Ethnocentrism

b. Cultural Relativism

2. Deepening of concepts will be done through differentiated instruction (use of


differentiated Activity/Work sheet) according to students strengths and capacity.

3. A video clip from the movie “A Bronx Tale”, depicting discrimination against
black people will be shown. The teacher will solicit students reactions about the
video.

E. Application

Discuss how and why cultural relativism mitigates discrimination

a. Buzz Session will be done per table


b. Volunteers will be asked to share their ideas.

F. Abstraction/ Generalization

 Our decision of what is wrong and right, or acceptable and unacceptable in our
society is influenced by our cultural orientation.
 Cultural Relativism recognize the fact of diversity, accommodate cultural
differences, and makes the individuals tolerant and flexible.
 Cultural relativism poses many ethical and moral issues. If cultures do not share
common moral values, we can say that universal principle does not exist.

IV. Assessment

Test A: Write R if the statement reflects cultural relativism and E if it reflects


ethnocentrism.

1. American believe that democracy is the best form of government.

2. Women in India wear red on their wedding while most Christians wear white.

3. Chinese people think that China is the “center of the universe”

4. In other culture, eye contact can be considered rude and a challenge of


authority.

Test B: Explain how cultural relativism mitigates ethnocentrism(10pts)

V. Assignment

In a ½ sheet of paper, list down three scenarios that show cultural relativism. Do not use
the example given in the lesson today.
