2.5 EVALUATION OF SEISMIC LOADS

i. Calculation According to IS 1893:2000
Seismic Zone V
Seismic zone factor, Z 0.36
Structural Type Industrial building
Importance Factor, I 1
Lateral Load Resisting System Portal steel frame
Response Reduction Factor, R 2.5
Height of the building, h, m 7.1
Dimension of the building along X, dx , m 45
Dimension of the building along Y,dy, m 25
Time Period of the building along X, Tx= 0.085h^0.75, Sec 0.37
Time Period of the building along Y, Ty= 0.085h^0.75 , Sec 0.37
Soil Type Type III (Soft soil)
Average Response Acceleration Coefficients along X,
(Sa/g)x 2.5
Average Response Acceleration Coefficients along Y,
(Sa/g)y 2.5
Design Horizontal Seismic Coefficient along X,
Ahx=ZISa/(2Rg) 0.18
Design Horizontal Seismic Coefficient along Y,
Ahy=ZISa/(2Rg) 0.18
Seismic Weight of Building, kN 700
Base Shear along X-direction, kN 126.00
Base Shear along Y-direction, kN 126.00

The seismic force is quite less compared to the lateral forces due to winds. Hence, wind loading will
govern the design of portal frame structure.

3 PRELIMINARY DESIGN

Numerical model of portal frame steel system

Since, I sections available in the market cannot sustain the loading for structure either prefabricated
tapered I sections or built up steel sections can be used as structural members. Here, built up sections
using ISMC sections are used to analyze and design the structure.
