Why - Social - Work (Essay)
The area where I grew up are composed of needy people. Their needs are different. Some of
them need financial support while the others need psychosocial support like encouragement
and guidance in order to have a better life. At my young age, I observed a lot of predicaments in
our society not only from the people but even in the environment itself. There are certain
parts of our place that if can be developed, it could turn out as a source of income and will
promote employment as well as beautify our place which is a big help for the community as a
whole. I really wanted to help people and to make a change for better. But I am not rich nor
employed because I am just a student. Because of this aspiration of mine that made me choose
to be a devoted and successful Social worker in the future. As we all know that, Social Work is a
practice-based profession and an academic decipline that promotes social change and
development, social cohesion and the empowerment and liberation of people such as social
Moreover, I chose BS Social Work because the principles and code of ethics appeal to my world
view. The principles of self-determination, cultural competency, social justice, dignity and
advocacy describe my own values. I believe that this will give me a way to put these values into
practice and will allow me to have a job that I truly believe in. I want a profession where I am
able to help empower individuals and families to find solutions, advance changes in social
policy, promote social justice, and pull communities together in a way that fosters both human
direct-service positions such as caseworker or mental health assistant which I really love to do.
In the future, I will put all Social Work principles into action by identifying people and
communities in need of help, assess clients' needs, situations, strenghts and support networks
to determine their goals, help patients understand their diagnosis and make the necessary
adjustment to their lifestyle, housing, or healthcare. For example, I may help people make their
transition from the hospital back to their homes and communities. And also I may help protect
vulnerable children and help families find housing or services such childcare or apply for
benefits like foodstamps. There are so many responsibilities a social worker must learn and
apply. But I believe that a career in social work is a gift that will allow me into the intimate life's
of wonderful people. As confucius said, "Choose a job you love and you never have to work a
day in your life." These are the reasons why I chose BS Social Work.
