Introduction to Regional Development Planning
Regional development planning deals with the efficient placement of
land-use activities, infrastructure, and settlement growth across a
larger area of land governments with the aim of improving the well-
being of people in areas where there is concern about present and
future living conditions
It also includes legislations and devising laws that will guide the efficient
planning and management of such said regions.
OBJECTIVE
The identify different areas with the most tourism potential and
defining the indicators and giving them their according weightages
using analysis method. These analysis are performed on official data as
well as data from secondary sources.
Gilgit Baltistan
Gilgit baltistan formerly known as the Norhern Areas, a tourist rich
region of Pakistan is located in the North of Pakistan. It borders Azad
Jamo Kashmir to the South and the province of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa to
the West. It is located a distance of approximately 400 KMs from the
capital city Islamabad. Gilgit Baltistan is generally a colder region
located at higher altitude. It is famous for highest mountain ranges in
the world like Mount Godwin Austen K2 and The Killer Mountain Nanga
parbat. Besides mountain ranges, there are many lakes, famous
glaciers, highest plateaus and forts. The longest and most important
river of Pakistan i.e. River Indus which forms the backbone of
agriculture and food production in Pakistan is passing from Gilgit
Baltistan. It is also famous for the rare breed of goats i.e. Markhor.
Apart from tourism and cultural significance, Gilgit Baltistan is
important from economic point of view for Pakistan since the China
Pakistan Economic Corridor is passing from it making it the only trade
route between China, Pakistan and other Central Asian States.
Tourism
Gilgit Baltistan has the world’s highest mountain ranges that are
Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindukush . It is also the home of world
second highest peak that is K2 which is around 28,251 feet above sea
level. Moreover, 100 highest peaks are above 7000 meters and few are
above 8000 meters including the Gasherbrum 1, Gasherbrum 2, Broad
Peak and Nanga Parbat. After the polar region, it has the largest
reservoir of the glaciers. Deosai Plains are the highest plains of the
world and cold desert Skardu are one of unique tourists spot in the
north.
Accessibility
It can be accessed via road and by aerial route. There are two routes by
which one can reach GIlgit Baltistan, the Karakoram Highway and N-15,
Naran-Jalkhad-Babusar-Chillas road but the latter is closed in winters
from November to May while the former is open for all kind of traffic
throughout the year. With the opening of China Pakistan Economic
corridor Havelian Thakot Expressway Project, the drive time to Gilgit
has been reduced manifolds, and Thakot-Raikot project is also planned
to be constructed in coming years, which would create ample of
opportunities in that area besides reducing the travelling time.

DEOSAI PLAINS
Deoasai plains are the second highest plains of the world located
between Astore and Skardu, at an altitude of 13,500 ft. It is famous for
it’s rare wild life and plantations. Animals like brown bears, leopards
and golden marmots are found here and these plains have a status of
National Park and no sort of construction is allowed. Every year, there
is a huge influx of tourists which is also worrisome since it’s causing
environmental degradation.

Fairy Meadows is the most favorite trekking destination for local as well
as foreign tourists. It leads to the base Camp of the Killer mountain,
Nanga Parbat. It can be reached using a jeep which travels on a jeep
